With Miburo finished, I've now read all historical Inre games (which means their entire catalogue except raindog). My rankings are:

>Chusingura>Miburo>Chusingura BnK>>>>Gikei (I'm convinced Gikei was rushed out due to covid issues, it's the only explanation)

Reading them out of order with Miburo last and Gikei second-last is interesting because Miburo is radically different from Gikei/Chusingura, which are quite similar and Gikei is clearly imitating Chusingura and just doing it again (but worse).

I thought about doing a ranking of girls or routes, but there's no real point for Miburo, it's a Hijikata game. She has the common route, the common ending, and the true ending, arguably 80% of the game or so is her route. There are other routes and romances for other heroines, but they're not the priority - it's all about Hijikata all the time (and she's one of the best heroines I've ever seen, so that works) and the routes are typically 1-2 hours in a 50+ hour VN that's at least the length of Chusingura if not longer. It feels way longer, but I think that's because the common route is probably the length of two Chusingura routes combined. You don't need to read Chusingura and BnK first, but you really, really should, as the events of BnK are canon to Miburo.

I'm really mixed on Miburo. It has fantastic characters, some of the greatest fight scenes I've read in a long time, and some excellent foreshadowing and setup, so many offhand lines from early on in the common route become vital plot points later on. It also has a massive number of plot problems. Some of them, like the fact that there are two separate 5-10 hour arcs about separate antagonists attempting to infiltrate and take over the shinsengumi, or that several major shinsengumi members just go "fuck it, I'm out", are real things that really happened in history, so they're kinda stuck. You can summarize the first half of the VN as the Shinsengumi surrounding inns and murdering people, and the second half as an extremely depressing war arc where they just keep losing battle after battle and even the wins are short-term and become losses sooner or later. But that's just what happened in real life. There's also just a huge number of problems with how they chose to write their story, like the fact that one route in particular is 80% MC sitting in a room while people describe cool things happening offscreen to him, or the best antagonist and arguably the best character in the entire VN being Serizawa, the character whose role in the story is over by the end of the trial, or the main character's super special power to win all fights and battles instantly really not being that helpful or explained very well. And that's not getting into the ending, which I have major problems with and probably needed another hour or so to give proper closure on a huge number of points, it feels super awkward and abrupt and there's several things that really should have happened on-screen after reading an entire gigantic VN to set them up that are offscreened instead. (massive spoilers) Specifically, the fact that MC's sister is actually alive, and she shows up for literally one line after that's revealed and that one line isn't even in the true route, and you don't get ANY reunion scene between them, is really frustrating. Also, I wish they'd at least given Hijikata and Ken a kiss before splitting them up. And seriously, Kazumi? This whole thing was about preparing for the war with Russia? And you drop that as literally the last line of the entire VN? Maybe I'm an edgelord, but I think the VN ending with Hijikata and Ken killing each other instead of revealing he had a complicated master plan to save them both that was 95% offscreened and then revealed after the fact. If they were gonna do a happy ending, they should've gone all the way instead of going bittersweet.

It's a very frustrating VN, it has some absolutely amazing scenes/lines/moments I'm the wolf hunter" (it's kino in context), but for there's also a lot of really big problems. That said, I think the highs outweigh the lows. Read Chusingura and the sequel first and if you like it move on to Miburo. And if you really, really love Inre's games and want more, move on to Gikei. I hope Inre isn't dead and comes out with more games, because despite my problems with them, they're the only people who do what they do and we need more devs to do what they do.
I could probably write another two or three more posts this length about the VN (and probably like twice that for Gikei, holy shit what went wrong?) but that's enough wasting words for now.

I meant it in the sense both Chusingura and Miburo are the following
>MC is a regular teenage boy from modern day Japan sent back into a famous historical era to replace a famous historical figure
>MC doesn't actually know much about the era other than the absolute basics, requiring lots of infodumps
>MC is able to be a decent fighter due to practicing a sport in modern Japan that they dropped due to tragic backstory reasons (kendo for Suguha, acrobatics for Yoshitsune)
>The game takes place in a time loop, each route ends with MC dying and then restarting and trying to do something different to fix it
(major spoilers for both Chusingura and gikei follow)
>Both routes are generally straightforward historical dramas until they take a wild swing into the supernatural in the final route (or about halfway through in Gikei's case, while in Chusingura it's really just the final sequence) and the climaxes of both involve battling giant snake monsters to save Japan from destruction
>Both do whatever it takes to give every character a happy ending despite that absolutely not being how it ended for anyone in real life
The plots are completely different, but they're structured very similarly and hit many fo the same beats.
>Heian bros, are we toast?
The strongest point about Gikei is the Heian stuff, I knew nothing about the era or Yoshitsune outside of boat hopping and it's fascinating to learn about. I have a laundry list of plot issues with Gikei, but Inre never disappoints when it comes to historical errata and it's worth reading just for that.

>on chapter 4 of chusingura, not sure how i feel about these teahouse history debates
I loved it, but I can see why people wouldn't. It's essentially the author going through their primary sources and going into the actual true story of the Chusingura in a kind of absurd amount of detail. It's really cool to learn about the primary sources that lead to the creation of these stories, as well as how they've been interpreted by Japanese historians over the centuries. The problem being of course while that's true for real history, it doesn't work for the story they've told. Kazumi can cite all the sources she wants that say maybe real-life Kuranosuke was a bad guy, and real-life Kira was innocent, the problem is that we've spent three routes with these characters and we know that this VN's version of Kuranosuke's a good person and Kira's not.
If it's really not working for you, just keep in mind the climax of the route has some absolutely stellar fights and great moments once the plot kicks in again.

>we've spent three routes with these characters and we know that this VN's version
this is the main thing that gets me, it renders the argument moot since as far as the vn is concerned kira was cursed into being an asshole specifically to kuranosuke as a part of a larger political play
if perhaps there was some ambiguity at the start of the vn, i might have enjoyed these scenes more

>> No.45166186

>>45166156
Yeah. I liked learning about what may or may not have really happened, but in the VN's terms all of Kazumi's theories are clearly wrong so it's kind of pointless to see her keep spouting them off. They could be true for real life, who knows, but they're definitely not true for the VN's version of events. But you get to romance a sexy evil bitch, so that's a plus.
That said, (spoilers for up to the end of the third route in Chusingura, but you can read it if you've started the fourth route) Something I was confused about and I don't remember if they explained explicitly is whether Kazumi is bodyjacking Ichigaku and didn't start until route 4, or whether Kazumi IS Ichigaku and was Ichigaku in the first two routes. They act pretty different and while Kazumi's kind of a bitch Ichigaku's downright evil, it doesn't seem in Kazumi's character to torture and kill Hanpeita, for instance. Maybe I forgot or missed a line that explains it? That's probably it.

The games assume you know absolutely nothing about the history and spend a massive amount of time explaining it to you. They're extremely heavy on the history autism, but only in the sense that you have to be actively interested in learning the history or you're not gonna survive the infodumps. But you don't actually need to know anything going in and arguably it works better if you don't because you can be surprised by the plot.

This game takes a while to set things up but the payoff you get in the end is astonishing
If Kasumi route was 4/10 and Kei somewhere between 6-7, Mari was a stellar 10/10
Finally everything made sense and each fight had a meaning, i still have a few complaints towards some characters actions (especially Kristoff, what the heck he wanted to do here even?) but overall the scenario has been really carefully thought out with all the foreshadowing coming into play
The last fight was the first time when i turned the volume on my headphones to the max and yet it still felt like not enough (hope i didn't damage my ears here..), my heart hadn't been beating so fast ever since the last Ichijou fight

I've seen eops doing same kind of shit, mostly among popular communities centered around all age titles, such as r07 trash and sciadv, so, it's not just a jop thing.
Part of it surely some kind of eceleb legacy, but not just that.
Modern online anglosphere just has this retarded trend of trying to appease academic "intellectualism" when writing about fictional works and most people engaging in said writing lack actual expertise and vocabulary. Finished Hiori route in Sakura Moyu. It was very good. I mean, this is supposed to be the weakest route?

The most important thing is obviously how it's also Tooya's route. The entire story with Tooya, despite being perhaps longer than needed, was very strongly moving, so when the game shifted to Hiori, at first I didn't feel as much. It felt like I already got my fill of 感動 from Tooya.

But Urushibara-sensei brought it home again. The reveal about Nana-chan, the scene where Taiga and Hiori meet at the shrine, the after credits scene, all really good.

I would have liked if there was one more scene with their friends reacting too. Also, since there was the scene with Taiga stepping up the stairs and becoming adults, has he (and Hiori) become unable to see Tooya and Asahi? But they could still come back to Asahi's shop, so it's kinda unclear.

How do you read this, bros? (Don't tell me if this is for some reason explained in later routes.)

I'm inclined to think they are no unable to see them and then they will eventually forget the shop too. It's kinda bittersweet that way. But then again, both Tooya's and Hiori stories were about how someone can be beside you and support you, even if you don't see them, so in that way, it's okay.

That's what happens with most companies; they all have a flagship title that for obvious reasons is very difficult to replicate in subsequent releases. There are a myriad of factors that can impact that, but I'm sleepy and not really interested in that topic. Anyway, I think you're being a bit reductionist. Taking risky decisions before and now is not the same; the creative costs are not the same and every day it is more difficult to innovate in a medium that has already matured

>> No.45185026

I think bailing them out by disregarding other creators.
I can understand other creators making their big hits from scratch. Pure geniuses in some aspects. But they can rely on their own originality to reach the heights they did.
20+ years, and the best you got is the work based off the work of others? That's your flagship? You stole the basic foundations of other works and made it your own and then nothing?
The more time goes on, the more it shows. Creatively bankrupt hacks could never strike gold again. Pains me the original creators were just too early, and not well funded, and these fuckers make bank. Time provides such basic observations for anyone to see.
Lastly, last decade was the best time to put money into works...given how low interest rates were for such a long time. Obviously, it also meant that cheaply made products to be sold worldwide were vastly more profitable than anything that took effort, but that's whole other deal.
I'll make a bet that you'll never see anything quite gold from these folks again, nor any other cash cow, for the rest of your lives.
And I will win this bet. It's not an opinion. Your observation leads you to bet against me you will lose.
