Every time I host this I've half a mind to expect most anons to have died or forgotten it. Warms my heart to see it's something that's still looked forward to. It's hard to believe I've been at this for almost 5 years now. Some of it equally feels like both yesterday to me and a lifetime ago. But I'll hold off on getting properly sentimental until the actual anniversary in a few more months.

>>45092781
Great question - I have no idea!
Since I'm a lazy procrastinator who does everything at the last minute I'm currently in the process of migrating everything over to 1.6, so I do suggest updating to it. It's impossible to remember everything I've worked on over the years but looking at the changelog, I don't think any of the scripts should break (too) much. It's impossible to really know for sure up until we actually start playing and going through everything. 1.6 is the only option going forward so it's basically a necessity either way.

Incidentally, apparently support for Win 7/8 has started being phased out and stuff like CEF functionality no longer works on these OSs. There's now a separate installer specifically for these versions of windows. It might be why the internet radios had stopped working for some anons over the previous few runs.

Don't expect anything too flashy, but we've played with a number of things over the years that could be considered at least interesting by most other servers standards, I think. My favorite thing was the pedestrian system, I wanted to try and recreate the feeling of the old modded touhou GTASA niconico videos, with all the silly peds walking around and stuff and overall just make the server feel a little more lively. It's got a wanted system, pathing for our custom maps and a few other neat little things.

Sadly due to an MTA issue with custom models, the memory of a replaced model is never properly freed up even after it streams out, so it crashes anons without a lot of RAM and as a result it's not something we use a lot. We have this problem with the custom maps as well due to how large they are - we've had to optimize a lot of our models to minimize crashes since MTA was never really meant to handle total "conversion" servers where almost every model is replaced.

Aside from that, there's some other novelty things. We have a basic carball mode, custom maps and models by our resident model anons, and sillier things like the palanquin ferry among a few other things. I've tried to keep things as non-committal as possible, so even if you don't show up for a while, you don't have to worry about missing anything or feeling "behind".

>>45112258
Sorry anon. A few more hours! I'll also apologize in advance that today will be fairly laid-back, I've nothing huge planned for today since this was fairly last-minute.

>>45112681
Playing by yourself would be pretty lonely, wouldn't it, anon? You can use a lot of the models and stuff locally on regular SA.
However I said 5 years ago that if a time came in which I could truly no longer do this, I would release all that I've worked on thus far publicly. I will keep that promise.

>>45112696

>> No.45112946

The recent update introduced support for custom IMG archives that allow to stream custom models without having to load them into the RAM all at once, but I agree in that current MTA branch was never designed and most likely will never be able to properly handle total conversions.

>> No.45113042

>>45112946
The IMG archives were something I was looking forward to as well as it would solve a lot of problems. Unfortunately, the last time this was hosted the anon that worked on our map models had mentioned they put together a simple IMG loading script and mentioned that the end result difference in memory usage over the old engineload functions was negligible at best and had the odd side-effect of slowing the game to a crawl in areas where there were lots of replaced models.

I've not verified this myself yet though and it's possible something has changed since then, as this was back when 1.6 had just released.

>> No.45113131

>>45112863

>The IMG archives were something I was looking forward to as well as it would solve a lot of problems.

Good news, they added some new functions that when combined with the IMG loading ones finally solves the issue with memory leaks when replacing models! I remade the mod loading scripts using them and the game loads much faster, the memory usage is very low, the slowdown I mentioned was fixed and crashes are pretty much gone.

Just one thing: for some reason they don't work in the current build of MTA, only in some nightly builds from September, I guess they changed something in the latter builds that broke these functions. Feel free to try it, but it only works on the MTA nightly1.6-rc-22191 build and earlier (test resource, normal players aren't required to download this file: https://litter.catbox.moe/0iisk4.rar )

Not sure if we can try it today, since it would require everyone to download that slightly older nightly build of MTA 1.6 but it would pretty much get rid of all RAM crashes and big loading times once and for all.

>> No.45113146

>>45113042
To be honest I didn't try this feature yet but I'm not surprised to hear this at all. Sadly this is just how MTA is: features either work only in certain circumstances, work in the way you would never expect them to, or cause unintended side-effects, rendering them useless. A lot of this stems from the fact GTA SA was just a rushed bugged game all around, but MTA team's reluctance and stubborness in certain aspects contributed to this situation greatly as well.

That's great news! I'm glad to see you're still around too, anon. It's probably out of the realm of what we can do tonight, but I'd been thinking about hosting on another day this week, or over the weekend, for the anons that can't make it today. That'd probably make for a good chance to give it a try.

And cheers anon. I did a quick glance over of the scripts. Using map blips in this manner is incredibly novel and I have to say I'm earnestly impressed by the creativity behind it; you've really come a long way. Would you mind reuploading the IMG script files as well? They'd sadly expired by the time I saw them.

If they actually managed to get a faithful IMG container functionality working it'd be a real miracle. Certain things like the custom maps would no longer have to be relegated to just being situationally enabled, and it'd solve pretty much all the crashes most people experience. Working around the memory leaks has long been a painful thorn since we've basically been teetering on the edge of replaced models that was sustainable without constantly crashing people. I'll hold out hope that the devs actually got it working as it should - it's definitely something to look forward to trying.

>>45113146
The poor anons whom I've subjected to various tests over the years know all too well about the jank. Most of the functions work fine when you use them in fairly textbook circumstances - the straightforward way they expected you to; but just outright won't work the moment you try to do anything with them outside however they expected you to use it such as in more complex functionalities. And then you have to make a convoluted workaround to implement what you originally wanted to, it's definitely an inconvenience sometimes, but we manage to work around it.

>>45114053
Shockingly despite the immense amount of API changes from the last time this was hosted - it does! Seemingly! CEF support being dropped on Win7/8 means there's a pretty good chance it won't work for anons on these systems anymore; we'll have to see.

>>45114090
If you have a previous pre-install you can simply drag and drop the contents of your "mods" folder in the root directory of MTASA 1.5 into the one in 1.6. Anything that's been changed since last time will have to be redownloaded in-game however.

>>45114732
>>45114869
>>45114887
All you need is a copy of GTASA - any copy works even pirated - and then just use a 1.0 SA downgrader if it isn't a 1.0 version already and install MTA.

If you've done the above, all you need to do is download the pre-install above and place the mods folder into your root directory of MTA 1.6. Connection info will be posted just before the server goes up.

I'll give my usual scary speech to new anons; please try to behave yourselves. It's pretty laidback, but no dumb crossboard slang or anything of the sort. Just focus on the game, and have fun messing around doing whatever.

Thanks to you both for your efforts in trying to add new things! I've added the updated script, we can try it out next time.

Somebody mentioned on Halloween that it's been a a long time since the server was hosted during the morning hours of EST. An advanced warning that I may or may not try to do so for the run this upcoming weekend in my plot to ruin everyone's normal sleeping schedules.

>>45125829
Talking about thread meta is no good, anon. If I'm being asked to give my own opinion on this then it's just the same as it's always been. Another anon already kind of mentioned it, but the gaming threads were originally just offshoots from here since people wanted to fill in for the holidays that I couldn't host GTA on, since I didn't have a PC for a long while - and eventually they just sort of became their own thing. In the far olden days people would sometimes host a one-off game in these threads. But times have changed of course, and many different things are played together on /jp/ now; It's more practical to just make a separate thread for those sorts of things nowadays.

The GTA threads have always been ephemeral, and I've said since the beginning to let the thread die if there's nothing relevant to discuss and no one is working on anything. If someone needs help scripting/model rigging/whatever or wants to share anything, then the thread serves it's purpose and is convenient for this. There's no real reason in keeping it alive just for the sake of it - there'll always be another time.

There's quite a bit to mess with this time, too. If the new IMG container functions actually work in even an albeit janky way then that's huge. I'm quite looking forward to stress testing some of the old things we've worked on in the past that had to be shelved or go relatively unused because of the memory crash problems. Particularly the NPC system stuff I'd been working on.

>You may want to look at my note in client.lua line 922, there's some condition I didn't quite understand the point of but kept anyway
That condition is there so the attack voices sound only if the player is holding the RMB, otherwise the sounds might be too much when everyone is using melee attacks at the same time.

Really appreciate the help, if I get stumped with other systems I've been working on for the server I'll post them.

>That condition is there so the attack voices sound only if the player is holding the RMB, otherwise the sounds might be too much when everyone is using melee attacks at the same time.
This crossed my mind, but it's a rather odd way to do this, if you just needed to reduce the amount of times a sound is played, you could've just used a timer and check if its alive like you did in heavy weapon function, or generate a random number and check if it's within a threshold to play the sound (for example math.random(1, 4) == 4 is roughly 25% probability)

Moving parts are separate objects attached to the main body, sometimes also rotating along one axis. Gastly's smoke is a material drawn in 3D environment always facing the viewport (the so-called billboard) with different frames over time. Some anons were talking about th19 models, so here's a blend file for the zanmu I'd mentioned, I think it looks a fair bit better than the alternative MMD one.

The materials with alpha are a bit screwy in the viewport since the VRM importer isn't perfect, you might want to manually tweak them depending on what you want to use it for.

The next GTA run will be hosted tomorrow, Sunday, at around 7 or 8 AM EST - that's the morning! Unless I oversleep (very likely).

>>45113131

So I've spent the majority of today testing this to see what I needed to do for everyone tomorrow, and, unfortunately, the results aren't great. There's a number of pretty bad problems.

On stable, the new IMG functions actually do work - just in a very, very limited capacity. Trying to load any more than a small handful of models via engineImageLink will just cause the client to hang indefinitely.

On the nightly 22191 build it's basically Russian roulette. Loading models from an IMG works, like stable - but loading any more than a few models seems to make it pure RNG as to what it decides to replace. Sometimes certain models won't load with the TXDs, and sometimes models will randomly fail to replace at all. I tested this both with your script, and my own that I had made back when 1.6 was still in testing (just repurposing the model table I had used for the engineload function and swapping it out with the new IMG-related ones) and sadly the results seemed the same with both methods. while it doesn't flat out crash like the stable build, it seems like the rate of failure increases relative to how many models you're trying to replace. Which is useless to us, since it can't even be worked around due to it being seemingly RNG on what these functions decide to load in if you go over whatever the arbitrary limit is.

Also annoyingly - since this nightly build is a bit outdated now, it seems like it will update the client unprompted each time you exit the game or crash, meaning you'd have to rerun the installer each time. We'll probably end up just running on stable for tomorrow morning.
Quite troublesome.

I think you can define that setting on the server .conf file, I keep the stable and nightly as separate installations and the nightly one doesn't auto update.

>> No.45152787

>>45152590
You can, I actually I checked the server conf first since I assumed that was the issue. But even with minclientversion and minclientversion_auto_update both disabled it only seems to disable the client update prompt when you join the server for the first time. If you join the server, then quit, relaunching the client will auto-update it without any sort of prompt.

Unless I'm exceedingly dense today and missing something obvious, it seems like the client will always try to update itself either to the most recent nightly or the most recent stable, whichever you set in your options, after you launch it. The server itself is fine and will remain on the set version, it's just the client.

Yeah that's the problem. The odd thing is that in previous releases that didn't happen, I hope the devs revert whatever change they did that broke the IMG loading so no one has to mess with nightly instances.

>but loading any more than a few models seems to make it pure RNG as to what it decides to replace.
That happens with about 11 or so IDs that use models always loaded in memory in the game (like 'male01' and some of the cop models like 'lapd1'), most IDs replace correctly. So a solution would be to either not use these IDs or just always load their models with the old functions. Or even load the most used characters with the old functions and the rest with the IMG.

Video related, you can see Reisen and Bunny Eirin didn't get loaded properly (since they use these hardcoded IDs) until their models got streamed by the client again.

Sad to hear this but it's just like I said, current MTA branch (MTA:Blue) was never designed to deal with this kind of functionality. There's an alternative branch called MTA:Eir that allows to implement total conversions playfully, but it's based on a really ancient MTA version and many fancy things we got used to over the years are unavailable there.

My main critique is just that at the moment it introduces more points of failure. Everybody has to run the same MTASA nightly build, pray it doesn't auto-update on them, on top of hoping whatever jank they introduced on nightly isn't too bad. I remember in some previous runs where I had everyone run nightly builds stuff like object collisions on certain things would outright disappear which messed up some of the race maps, among other weird little things.

At the moment I think it's best to just stick to stable if only for the sake that I know people will have problems that I won't be able to fix for them on the fly. if the IMG container functionality gets polished up a bit then and I don't have to make anons jump through hoops with messing around with build versions, then that would be the ideal. The impression I got was that it's still something of a wonky functionality right now.

I hate to sound like a naysayer, especially since the IMG container stuff was something I've been personally looking forward to for years, too - but I err on the side of trying to keep things simple for everyone and headache-free, even if it doesn't always seem that way.

On the bright side, since we optimized a lot of the models the crashes aren't as frequent, at least. They only notably get worse when loading up anything that's going to be heavy on memory like NPCs and the maps but they're nowhere near as bad as they used to be.

>>45153231
>MTA:Eir
That's a name I haven't heard in a while. I remember hearing about it's vastly improved streaming functionalities and some other nice tweaks. But that got abandoned years ago, didn't it?

Which reminds me, I remember years ago reading on their github a silly bug where SA sounds would tank FPS. They mistakenly thought ped collisions were the cause when in reality it was the footstep sounds or something like that. I wonder if they ever fixed it, in hindsight it might be why the ped system tanks certain peoples' FPS for seemingly no reason.

True, it's probably for the best to stick with the usual resource for now, I'm hoping they fix it soon because when it worked the performance was amazing, both in RAM usage and loading time. I didn't noticed they broke it until I updated to the stable release right before the server returned.

It's not abandoned, it's still getting commits, but MTA api in it is rather obsolete.
Ped collisions is indeed an issue because SA implements an inefficient collision detection algorhitm (part of the reason why collision files are separate from models and usually their geometry is much simpler). This is not so obvious when you test it on default map because it's tightly optimized, but multiple peds on complex custom objects kill the FPS instantly

That's news to me, neat. It might be interesting just to try for the novelty of it as a one-off thing some day. The last I'd heard about it was back in like 2019 or so.

Funny story about that like the other anon mentioned, we experienced that bug firsthand since poor anons were getting slideshow FPS in the SDM and couldn't figure out the cause. That same issue you linked was opened on the github just days later and it was only pure happenstance I came across it and realized it was the exact problem we had. I think some of the original ideas put forth were that it was an issue with the model just being unoptimized or the interior coordinates. Pretty nostalgic seeing this again as I'd completely forgotten about it.

This was the other issue I was thinking of:

That's it! All 30 minutes of it. Thanks for coming today! I didn't originally have high hopes for today, but actually gleamed a fair bit of information.

For posterity; the main thing is that the pedestrian system itself works (relatively) fine. But when used in conjunction with the GLUE script of all things - it seems to cause something reminiscent of a memory leak in that it just gradually tanks peoples' FPS. It's good to know since it actually narrows down the problem to a point it can (hopefully) be permanently fixed, though I think the old glue version actually did seem to work without notably affecting it.

I have no idea if that script actually worked properly at the very end or if cache jank got me

Just a single quick East only since I was curious if anything'd changed with the CEF functions it uses. I'd like to give it a little room and seat area, like poker has.

You're gonna make me bleed my heart out here anon. I'm glad you had fun!

I do not know if they still lurk these threads, but if the anon that originally proposed the idea of MTA all those years ago is still here, I hope you know that I never forgot everything you did for this. I doubt either of us ever really expected for things to turn out this way, but I never forgot the help you gave me when I first started this server. And I'm sure there's no shortage of people I've probably ticked off over the years or don't agree with how I do things, but all I can really say is that I've done my best to keep this together these 5 years without it becoming a circlejerk or exploding into some inane drama. It's funny thinking back to the first year of the server sometimes, when quite a few people didn't think I'd be able to keep this going for any more than a few months.

It's a little harder keeping track of everyone nowadays because of how many people join, but I like seeing new faces and the fresh reactions to some old things, so long as people behave and try to keep the spirit of fun alive. Don't be shy to nag at me a few times if I overlook you since there's usually around 30 people to keep an eye on asking me for stuff.

A post like this is honestly better saved for the fifth anniversary, but these Fall and Winter months always make me feel a wistful sentimentality. It's strange to think back on the butterfly effect these threads have had, and how my proposition for a quick, temporary half-assed server ended up being something I'd do for 5 years.

As one of those more newer faces I really appreciate that you still host this server. I have never had more fun in a multiplayer game in my entire life than in your server. There is just something about messing around and having fun with interesting people that is really amazing. I feel that yesterday's "test" was the best example of what I mean. Things such as simply chasing a train turning into everyone getting on it and riding around the map is just pure fun. I feel that if I had never started going on this server a few years ago I would not be in the best state of mind today. Thank you for hosting it for so long and I hope you will keep doing so in the future otherwise I would probably be really sad. You are honestly really amazing!

Ah no, the Alice accessory shop is perfectly fine. But I don't have it on my local server so I use the open source one to rig and test new accessories, the only issue is that they use different attach systems so the rotations and such are inconsistent.

No problem, I also forgot to tell I noticed you're using synchronous DB API. Since you said this resource is used just to test attachments this may not be important, but normally you should avoid calling synchronous DB functions as much as possible. Every time you call a synchronous function, the server freezes up, waiting for DB query to execute and return results, which can take anywhere from a couple hundred milliseconds to tens of seconds, depending on many factors (DB connection type and quality, HDD performance, configured query timeout interval, etc). This may not be easily noticeable when you're testing this alone but several players will most definitely freeze your server with synchronous DB updates.
To avoid this, you should switch to asynchronous API by supplying a callback function that will handle query results in the DB function call, this way server will not freeze and continue execution, only calling the callback function when query results arrive. Examples of this usage are included on every MTA wiki page related to DB functions.

Anon...

Oh what the hell. Everyone else has been throwing stuff at me, it's my turn. Here, anon. I want you to have this. It's the accessory script I made for the server. Edit line 255 of sourceC to change the shop's init col position. Alternatively you can just make a commandHandler tied to the shopInitialize function. Add new accessories under sourceG. It's pretty self explanatory, the first argument is the bone ID the accessory will use to determine how it moves.

Unlike the one you're using, it doesn't use SQLite and instead saves a file in the client cache containing your accessory data each time the resource stops, or you exit the game. This is why you lose your accessories sometimes if I forget to exclude that file from the pre-install, since it just gets overwritten. Sort of like the graffiti.

>bone_attach
Anon... Your script is amazing, but bone_attach resource is widely considered obsolete, it causes a huge strain on performance, especially when lots of attached objects are streamed in. It's been succeeded by pAttach resource, which should be an easy drop-in replacement for bone_attach in mot cases. You should look at performance comparison at https://github.com/Patrick2562/mtasa-pAttach, the difference is really huge

>> No.45191287

>>45190932
I'm aware, anon. It's the "QoL changes" I mentioned in >>45180911

pAttach had only just came out by the time we were using this and at that time, it was a little buggy, I actually did swap out the old functions with it and we played around with it, but it had some weird problems back then with the attachments offsets getting screwed I think it was. Or I think they randomly disappeared when streamed out and back in or something weird like that. Back then the performance impact was negligible with around 15 people max and even less actually using the accessories, so I opted to keep using bone_attach since it didn't have any problems and the performance hit was fairly marginal at that time.

I'm sure they've updated it nowadays though and I plan to update it, and a few other scripts, in time for Christmas. But for now it should serve it's purpose to make that anon's life easier for messing with the accessories if they want to.

I've been without a computer up until fairly recently, and a lot of time has passed, so that's why I've been running a bunch of old and random scripts to see if anything's broken in that timeframe. Weirdly of all things, it looks like they changed the way flamethrower ammo works for whatever reason, meaning I've gotta go through and update the ammo values for some of the gamemodes. Before, flamethrower ammo used to be a multiplicative value of I believe 10, but it looks like they made it a flat value now like the other normal guns.

They work on the weirdest things, funnily enough the admin resource still gives flamethrower ammo assuming the old format.

Speaking of accessories, I remember someone complaining about the sugegasa model so I just happen to have a battle kasa model from one of the past projects I'm willing to donate, along with a wizard hat, not sure if anyone wants them though. They may require messing with the model's pivot point or export settings to work properly in other attachment resources.
