Japan / General, or now Otaku Culture(I'm not too sure when this change occurred), I have come here casually once in awhile to seek interesting obscure media outlets. Initially I was surprised to see how knowledgeable you were about your pastimes, which is something I earnestly respect, but now I am shocked by the lifestyle many of you young people adhere to. It seems there is a cultural identity that makes some posters look up to social shut-ins and/or "NEETs." It is a colloquial philosophy that only degrades your community with ideas of self loathing.

Though I am a graduate at fairly prestigious university--a person who would never be thought of as a poster in a place like this. (I have a liberal colleague who is adept in literary criticism, and she sold me to the /b/ board as a fun way to analyse a real example of a collective consciousness. I myself am not a fan.)--I do not look down or undermine the circumstances that lead the majority of you to where you are. Instead I want to help anyone who has found themselves in a harsh situation. As a philosophy major I know much about thoughts, from Nietzsche to Thomas Hobbes, and could probably help you find the way.

Through my discoveries of the site I went through many of the boards including random, anime&manga, music and a couple others. But I wasn't fascinated at any of them until I saw this shocking imagine to the right.

Tell me something about yourself Otaku General, I don't quite understand you.

If you can't reconcile these two pieces of knowledge, then I'm going to give you a pretty big hint: You need to reconsider what you think you know about human nature.

Specifically: Forming "connections" is just a way for humans to get what they need. The behavior of forming connections is just the path of least resistance in a consumer society. Just because it's the easiest route to obtain what we need, does not make it "human nature".

I never said people only act in self interest. Altruism exists in nature, and I'm not going to try and deny it in human beings either. But read Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene" to get a better understanding of why altruism is selfish in a way.

Additionally, not everyone acts altruistically. I believe human nature can only be correctly defined as the set of characteristics that *all* humans share, not just a limited set of them like "most humans try to form connections but some don't."

Unfortunately this leads to a definition of human nature which is pretty stark: "eats, sleeps, fucks, and shits". Not a very exciting definition.

As for piracy: Piracy is altruistic behavior.

Altruism can be self interested, and use charity to gain social leverage, but it's that core need for leverage and being needed in society that implies humans naturally feel the need to connect to each other.

Ah, interesting point. But there is an idea running about that knowledge cannot be expanded with prior knowledge. Assessments on human nature, metacognitivity, and the way we set up our culture have all changed throughout history. We, as a society, have accumulated many different ideas on how to do things. Since there are so many ideas, some abstract, some common place, that there needs to be people to gather as much of these as possible.
