In future games spend more time leveling everyone up. Also, you want rance at least level 60, higher if possible. Units like Kenshiin and Uruza make for good damage dealers, mikos and diviners make excellent support for keeping heavy hitters / rance / kentarou alive. +100 damage sword / +50 damage claws also make fights a lot easier.

Equip a diviner with a protection paper.
Cast guard shikigamis on Rance and Kentarou.
If you have monks that can replenish actions, use them to replenish Rance and Kentarou.
If you have mikos use them to heal Rance and Kentarou.

Make sure you go through all dungeons. I'm assuming this is the first Xavier fight. Just lose and go through the game over screen mentioned. Most people do that on their first run when they don't know what they're doing.

Also you can only damage Xavier when Rance is in the battlefield (and has hit Xavier once). Make sure you keep him there and alive. You don't need him to have turns, he just needs to be there.
