What is a escutcheon?
Am I learning Kanji or english?
I'm fucking done with trying to learn japanese, and fuck Chris from Abroad in Japan for recommending me this trash in the first place.
I'm better off filling my brain's hard drive with other more useful information than this holy bible of complete gibberish.
Goodbye and farewell.

>reddit spacing

Here is the great irony of the whole reddit-spacing thing. It's actually 4chan spacing. It predates reddit and was used on 4chan first. You guys are literally too young to actually know this and the userbase has grown quite rapidly during your time, enough to drown out old memes. Your generation is not actually conscious. You are entirely unaware of the real history because you were not there for it, so you look to Reddit, which actually inherited it from 4chan, and you confuse where it came from with where you are seeing it now.

It would be like going to America, eating spaghetti, going to Italy, eating spaghetti, and then saying "lul American cuisine". You are all confused children and just do not really know what you are talking about or even understand where things come from.

But the spacing itself was born from 4chan, largely because of how poorly walls of text display and because it was easier to read that way. If you doubt this, just take a look at the Stanford 4chan archives from 2008. https://purl.stanford.edu/tf565pz4260

While yes, Reddit existed in 2006, but no one from that time period would have used it. Meanwhile, 4chan had existed for several years at that point and the spacing convention had already been adopted. You guys were just not there, I was. I can prove this if I go through that archive, find my old tripcode, and show that spacing convention in use even then.

I'm an English teacher currently reading the book list for the DELTA course.
In "How to Teach Vocabulary" by Scott Thornbury, he says:
>Core words are typically those words used when defining other words. For example, the definition of both 'giggle' and 'guffaw' involves using the word 'laugh'.
This forced me to reexamine the anki core decks for Japanese, which use newspapers. Should they not, instead, use dictionaries for a better core list of vocabulary? Using newspapers is useful for nobody except those who will read newspapers. Using a dictionary to extract the words used to define other words would be much more useful for much more people, realistically.

>> No.44818543

newspapers are fine as long as the corpus is sufficiently large and you frequency-sort the result based on data from vinnies/linnies.

>> No.44818567

>>44818524
The anki core decks use newspapers (and potentially other sources too like visual novels/dramas) to measure which words are most often used.
The end goal for a core deck is to lay the foundation for the end user, afterwards that user will have to seek out on his own other vocabulary/expressions to nurture his understanding of the language.

If you teach someone the most common words in dictionary definitions, that will help them with reading dictionary definitions... but why the fuck would any noob want to do that?

here is the type of thinking that you should have: imagine there is no core deck, you can only mine. what will the first 2000 words that a person mines be, assuming they mine a word as soon as they have seen it twice in their anime/manga? the reality is that it will probably be pretty close to the top 2000 most common words simply because those words are hundreds and sometimes thousands of times more frequent than the other 30,0000 words out there.

so then the question just becomes, can we save you a little effort and just give you a pre-made deck with those words that you will definitely have to mine anyway?
