Well it's been a month since release.
Happy 1 month anniversary.
Made an updated chart to see how 1.10 is shifting things in Japan.
Here's a chart showing the average ladder ratings of the top ten players of each character including the standard deviation of each set.
Before the trolling/flaming starts this isn't a set in stone tiers lists. The ladder ratings fluctuate multiple times a day. What you can get from this list is:
- General strength of a character from the average rating her players achieve using her.
- A small glance into how popular or easy to use a character is. Generally speaking easier to use characters and characters with high ease of use will have lower variance (the area enclosed in the black lines.) Suika is an example of this. Unpopular characters or difficult to use characters have greater variance. Suwako is an example of this.

Here's an additional chart showing how the very best player of each character is currently ranking. The current champion of the ladder is an overwhelming Marisa player.
We can also see that the best Suwako player is also very strong now.

And finally for comparison here is what things looked like 2 weeks before 1.10 came out. Just for comparison's sake.
Looks like things are beginning to improve.
Keep in mind that balance is likely going to continue shifting as 1.10 is only a month old, and pre 1.10 games are still recorded in the ladder.

>>4470448
No, I made a mistake. That should be "Popular characters or characters with high ease of use." Sorry.
Those conditions help create a situation where more consistent player ability will appear.

What is interesting to me is that there are characters with high averages, like Yukari being 4th average, but having a low ceiling (11th best by top player.) Then the opposite also shows up. The average Reisen is quite low, but has a higher ceiling than most.
>>4470449
It is also worth noting that the spread from best to worst has dropped considerably.
2320 to 1950 is now 2300 to 2120 or so. That's a much smaller gap.

No cookie cutter decks in Soku.
Even tourneyfags rarely use the same decks.
But here are some concepts to stick to:
Don't make a deck with a few copies of many cards. You'll just dumb luck your way into wins or losses. Running 4 of your cards is good.
Balance your card costs. Sure level 5 spellcards are awesome but if all you put in is level 5 spellcards you won't be able to use your deck for anything as you build up. Try to make the average cost for your cards around 2-3. Remember that you draw cards faster below 3 and slower after 3 so you may be able to draw and use 6-7 low cards before you draw one big 5 one.
And finally be careful with your system cards. While 5% defense sounds good it is only 500 health a round max and you might not even draw it until you're almost dead in the final round. Rather than save yourself 500 damage why not try to hurt them for more than 500 with your cards?

Good games winty. It's bad etiquette to quit when you're losing or get off to a bad start. Besides, I can't save replays if you quit before the game ends.
It looks like you learned to block on wakeup while your opponent is standing right next to you. Now you just have to stop yourself from airteching so much. You wouldn't have got caught in Yuyuko's ring that one game if you had just fallen to the ground instead of recovering in the air.

It doesn't play like any existing franchise. The grazing mechanic is too different. The flight mechanic also offers a lot of freedom.
The best comparison might be a slower MvC2, since it is all about setups and 'assists' in so much as cover fire.

To add onto this:

Try to figure out what skill cards improve the most at which levels. For example, Alice's Thousand Spear Dolls (alt 214BC) is not good at all on the ground at level 1 because it leaves you very vulnerable even if you get a succesful hit in, but at level 2 it can be used safely in almost any situation, and can even be used in ground combos (aside from being a simple finisher). Therefore, if you put 4 Thousand Spear Doll cards into your deck, unless you really like the idea of maximizing its damage, you can use two of those cards as fodder for your spellcards after using two to bump the skill up to level 2

If you're going to use skill cards that require a high level to be useful (COUGHMEILINGCOUGHCOUGH), you're going to have to make due with low cost spell cards. Always think to yourself while designing your deck "how many cards can I blow on a spellcard without hurting my overall efficiency?" Working with a variety of skills that work quite well at level 1 or 2 opens up the option for a lot of powerful spellcards in your deck. For instance, Meiling's Earth Dragon Wave (alt 22BC) is perfectly serviceable at level 1, and her Scarlet Cannon (default 623BC) is excellent even at level 2, with only one card invested in it. Even if you stacked a Meiling deck with those skill cards, you could also put a bunch of powerful level 5 spell cards without hurting your efficiency much, because all you really *need* are the level 1 and 2 versions of those cards, respectively, to get the main benefit out of upgrading to them

See how you can apply this philosophy to your own main. Determining which skill levels are the "must haves" of your character will go a long way towards making a strong deck suited to your personal style of play

The weather system is pretty unique to this game, makes every match different, but it also screws up your plans.

Spell cards let you customize your abilities to match your playstyle, and can make two people playing the same character drastically different.

Balance is relative, due to the spell cards, although some characters do have noticeably higher speed and/or damage output.

I'm not exactly knowledgeable about fighting games but I haven't seen anything horribly similar.

It does not really play like any other fighting game I've ever tried. It's very floaty and slow paced, sort of like Super Smash Brothers, but the mechanics of the game are unlike any other. Bullets are much more powerful than other fighting games, but at the same time they are almost useless because of the graze mechanic that makes you invincible to bullets. It'd really be better if you just tried it yourself

>>4472821

Also, honestly, this Anon is not correct in my opinion. The harshest learning curve Hisoutensoku has is learning what all the spell and skill cards of each character does. That's it. Inputting commands is easy because there is nothing more complicated than a Dragon Punch motion in this game, and the game is slow paced enough to make it easy to get a handle on the action pretty quickly

It's still a fun game, though, but not for everyone. You'll enjoy it if you like the idea of a slower paced fightan that focuses mostly on ranged setups and a great deal of movement freedom, as opposed to, say, Street Fighter, where jumping towards the enemy is basically handing them a fifth of your life bar

Like most fighting games, at that level it's two players testing the reactions and abilities of the other while looking for an opening. In touhouz, the best way to do that is throw a bunch of shit at him and see how he reacts so you can do something to punish his reaction. Bullets, when used outside of combos, are to cover approaches, make openings, and defend yourself from other bullets. That's a lot of shit for them to do, so you'll be using a lot of them.

>> No.4472915

>>4472870
The learning curve is harshest on simple game knowledge that you can get from reading a wiki? Are you serious?
Higher level play revolves almost entirely around your ability to know not only your own character's strings very well but also know your opponent's strings well enough that you can identify frametraps, errors, escape points, border escape points, reversal points, fifty-fifties and more. Most new players never get past this point and instead mash out, luck out, or get destroyed by pressure. That's where the learning curve starts.
You also need to know how your bullet density compare to hundreds of other possible bullets, and in many cases be aware of matchup specific combos or immunities to combos. The game has a steep learning curve that really can only be climbed up by a significant amount of grinding out trial and error.

Show me even one that isn't in some retarded combo video featuring a player stacking up with 4 Control Rods, level 4 skills, and using a level 4-5 spell card, possibly after the enemy uses 4 Control Rods themselves so they take bonus damage. The closest thing I can think of is Suwako cursing with her + damage effect and then using one of her high level spell cards, but even then it will probably only take off around 5000-6000hp without a control rod

>>4472888

This >>4472899 summed it up pretty well. You can do a lot with bullets in this game, and testing reactions, countering bullets, fishing for combos, and forcing graze to punish with melee are all only a few of the things you'll find you can do with them

Just download it, patch it, and give it a whirl, man. You're on /jp/, it's not like your time is that valuable to begin with~
