Yo, /jp/. f/a/g here. See, I was taking a look through all the boards, just to see what's going on and stuff, and I came across yours, which I'd largely ignored since the split (not sure why). And...

Er...yes. Can you recommend me a Touhou game please? I mean, I've never played any of them, and I'm lacking for games - good games - and I'd like to try one, just to see. But there's a fair few of them, and I don't where to start. And I hear that this is where I need to go for Touhou-related stuff (not /v/ apparently). If it's at all possible, any character or background info would be great. Yes, a Google search would probably net me all this from some wiki; I get the feeling /jp/'s info would be better.

If you don't want to, it's fine - just rage at me, and I'll delete the thread, there's no point in board clutter and all. Thanks.

An iqdb lookup says that this is Kaguya, in the pic.

Just because you are willing to delete your thread, at this hour even,
start with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, you can find it quite easily by googling the name along with "megaupload" or something.
Touhou wiki can help you with backgrounds and such, just don't take the "Trivia" section about each character seriously.

Normal Mode: In order starting with EoSD

Hard Mode: SA or UFO first

Lunatic Mode: SA (no ReimuA) or UFO (No SanaeB)

Extra ModePC-98 games

>> No.4467393

PCB has a good curve. You get a border bonus that temporarily shields you every 50,000 cherry points. Imperishable Night is also a good choice, due to easier patterns and a more lenient bombing window.

EoSD is a shaky starting ground. For one when you focus your hitbox, is not shown, making it great at learning to dodge bullets without forcing you to keep you eyes glued on your character's hitbox (which is a terrible idea).

I've actually already got (AFAIK) all of the games; I found a 3GB~ish torrent - which was a single .rar file, bit weird - and got that rather than try to find the games piecemeal. I'll check the wiki too. And I'm always ready to delete a thread, especially when they take a turn for the worse.

I'll start with EoSD first - do the games differ significantly from each other, or are they simply successive improvements upon a central theme/mechanic?

>> No.4467434

>>4467414
Pretty much a new mechanic is implemented in every game, that replaces another one. PCB has the cherry system, but IN has the time and youkai/human system. theres a shift in the core mechanics at Moutain of Faith, because the Power and Bomb System were completely reworked.

Also go ahead and post your experience after you play. And keep in mind this piece of advice: don't underestimate even Stage 1.

Also, Phantasmagoria of Flower View to play against normalfags, easy to get into.

Well, they differ significantly in that SA and UFO are shit, but other than that, it's just ZUN fucking around with scoring and shot types but leaving the basic "dodge this shit" gameplay the same.

Perfect Cherry Blossom is the best to start, Imperishable Night is good too but it is too easy.

Will do - how long is the average play-through? Will it take long enough that I'd have to start a new thread, or will this thread still be around when I'm done?

Also sorry for not posting quicker guys; I was gonna put my Steam profile into leave-me-the-fuck-alone mode, as I'm about to start playing a game that I'd like not to be interrupted while playing, and all my friends have disappeared off my list.

>> No.4467542

We get the info from the wiki, too. Well, the minority of us who bothers to get the info on characters does. It has most of the supplementary books translated, go figure.

Now, if you've never played STGs before, start with Shoot the Bullet. Seriously. People keep saying it's too hard, but they forget that it's also the most beginner friendly.

Back! ...I failed it. My stats:

Score: 3167993
Difficulty: Easy ;_;
Game Completed: 93.23%
Continues Used: 3 - two of which were on the final boss, goddamit (Yuyuko?)
Misses: 12
Bombs Used: 11
Spell Cards Captured: 13
Slowdown Rate: 0.04%

In general, I like it. I get the feeling a lot of the story is mangled by the translation, but at least it has a story in the first place (a lot of scrolling-shooters don't, from what I've seen). Visually I find it impressive, the random Engrish-y bits of text at various points, the BGM track names down the side, and some of the backgrounds are simple and effective. The actual bullet patterns catch my attention though, and it's difficult not to get entranced by what often looks like artwork-in-motion. The character art is weird though (but I'd already heard it was anyway). The music is interesting - a lot of the samples and synths used are cheesy as hell, but the actual programming/sequencing and chords are great.

All in all, I enjoyed it a lot. It's hard as fuck but not unrewarding either.

Touhou game plots aren't (usually) silly. It's just that Gensokyo works differently to the real world.

The stories are creation myth type stories that make no sense unless you interpret them symbolically, and the endings aren't usually canon.
