Grind kanji, memorize vocab, learn grammar. Not hard, just time consuming. If it's kicking your ass, you need to study more instead of browsing /jp/.

I'm not really using any aids, I tried Genki, but I just ended up grinding kanji and learning vocab along the way and going with the grasp of grammar I got from my weeaboo ways. Once I know a decent amount I'm going to start reading to memorize them better. Maybe after that I'll also try picking up a textbook again, but I already didn't like the order they put the vocab in these when I was learning english in school.
