That's not how it works either. Languages are in flux, but changes are fossilized in writing and literature.
Also, there's way more to words than meaning: intent, nuance, context, implied traits and attitude, tone. Why do you think the entire branch of pragmatics exists?

Anyway, knowing more runes will let you read and look up words faster. However, you can always use a texthooker or OCR and look up words as you go. Or failing that, lookup by radical and handwriting input.

Lots of games use spaces. They just put them after particles instead of words. Or they use commas (pic related), or they spell certain words in katakana to make them stand out.
Still doesn't change the fact that kana soup sucks and only gets worse the more runes you know.

Is it bad practice that I use some mnemonic devices involuntarily when learning kana? I have been drilling hiragana these past couple days and I can't help but think of related words or characters I already know.

For example, when I look at らI think about Araragi Koyomi (because of the "Arararagi joke"), は reminds me of a mother, ふ reminds me of vapor for some reason, る for 'To Love Ru', ゆ for Yu Narukami, etc, etc.

I doesn't happen with all characters but I wonder if these "crutches" will hinder my progress later on.

What is the nuance of using the kanji of common kana words rather than just using the kana? I was looking through the vocab frequency list of Kara no Shoujo on jpdb and they used a lot of 此処 for ここ, 為 for ため, 筈 for はず, etc. Is it just a more literary/old fashioned way of writing to fit the atmosphere of the VN?

also, what is a good target cards per day if I want to keep the time on that deck under 30 minutes a day, preferably less than 15 minutes a day? for reference, I am doing the core 6k deck at 50 cards a day which is taking me roughly 40 minutes, but it will probably creep up to 50 minutes or an hour per day once the 50 cards per day settles in.

>Grammar structures don't lend themselves well to being studied via flashcards.
I was planning on doing this, but then I ran into a bunch of sentences where I didn't understand it cause I didn't realize there was a grammar point I didn't know. Eventually, I hovered over the right combination of kana and scrolled yomichan to find the grammar point, but this would've been way faster if I primed myself with the grammar point before hand so I would know, "hey that's a grammar point that I primed myself with but forgot, let me look up what it means"
Looking up a grammar point when you know it is grammar point you don't know is so much easier than trying to figure out which part of sentence is a grammar point you don't know. There were probably sentences I read where I thought I understood it, but it was using a grammar point that makes the sentence have a different meaning. It is impossible to fix this without coming across a contradiction later on based on your flawed misunderstanding of the sentence.

I believe this problem only exists for people who couldn't acquire a decent accent anyway. if you're someone who can, you'll automatically self-correct later as long as you do a lot of listening then.
but you still shouldn't completely neglect listening even if you decide to readmaxx for now. if you do anki, then make sure you have pronunciation audio on auto-play etc. preferring things like anime subs and voiced vns will also make it easier, obviously, but that doesn't mean you should feel discouraged from reading manga or books or something.

What? How is this hard at all? We distinguish between playing music and listening to music in english, you just used two separate words to describe both concepts in your post.

How do you figure it will be in any way difficult to know the difference between 聞きます and 音楽をします?

(I'm not much farther than you I'm at like Unit 12 right now, but been using this with a mix of going through the Japanese from Zero workbooks, and it's been fun so far.)

This. It's done wonders for actually getting people started because of how easy it is to pick up, get those dopamine hits of accomplishment, and most importantly: keep people consistent and making a habit out of language learning. Of course there are better ways to go about studying, but it keeps people remembering to keep at it, which is great.

I still do Duolingo every day because it's legit fun clearing courses and quests, and even if I'm not feeling like serious study that day, it keeps me thinking about the language and engaging with it, even minimally. People shit talk Duolingo but it's done good things for people's motivation. It's FUCKING good for people with ADHD like myself as well.
