For beginners
Everything you need to know about tenhou itself can be found here http://arcturus.su/tenhou/

Explanations for the tiles, rules, scoring etc can be found here:

Hand Calculator: http://no-info.no-ip.info:6224/mj/mahjong.html

Try the singleplayer games first.

Playing without knowing what you do is not only frustrating for yourself but also for your opponents, a player that left because he couldn't ron for his no Yaku hand or because someone ron'd his discard just kills the whole fun for everyone.

Usually, a game lasts around 30 minutes, so please, if you're not going to stay until the end, respect the other players and don't join a new game.

Also keep in mind that Mahjong is more a game of "not losing" than straightforward winning.
Furthermore you play with 3 other people and luck plays a big part in it, so don't expect to win more than 1 out 4 games, especially not as a beginner.

If you read some of the linked sites and still have questions feel free to ask.

Jesus christ /jp/ you will not fucking believe what happened today.

So I went to this small coffee shop/bakery we have here, and as I was getting my delicious steak panini, I notice 3 Japanese gentlemen with mahjong tiles out and already placed into the walls There was a suspiciously empty chair.

I got a little closer and eyed their table. The eldest of the 3 (looked at least 60, can't tell with the japanese) notices me and says in a think accent "mahjong"

I reply "ah, yes, I play a little when I have time"

One of the other 2 says (in perfect english) "our 4th man hasn't arrived yet, would you like to join us for a session?"

I instantly agreed.

the first two rounds where rather uneventful, we chatted while we played, they told me they where a father, son, and grandfather, and how the grandfather was visiting from japan. then in the third round, when I discard my 7 sou, the old man says in a raspy voice, "Ron"
16000 point haneman.

they all start laughing at my apparent stupid move and the game continues with me at around 10000 points.

At this point their forth player had already arrived and was watching over my shoulder, I offered him my seat but he declined and requested i finish my game with them.

So i cling to life a few more rounds with some quick hands, and we're in the last round, and my starting hand is pretty mediocre.6 turns later, the 4th player taps me on the shoulder and says "Do you know what you have there?" and I did, I was in a 9-way wait on a perfect chuu-ren.

The old man plays the 9 pin "heheh, ron."

Then we all have a good laugh and I depart in victory.

best day of my life.

Use your brain.

1. Count up fu and han.
2. fu * 24(dealer) or 16(non-dealer) * 2^han = point
(You can skip this for mangan+ hand.)

Otherwise, you can just remember the chart.

>> No.4443556

>>4443510
I havn't really bothered to learn how to figure out fu yet. I have memorized every yaku and can pretty easily tell how much han a hand has after a few seconds. I guess I should stop being lazy.

>> No.4443631

>>4443556
Simple really.
You have a shitty hand without much honors/terminals and no kan.
You will have the usual average fu.
1han = 1000
2han = 2000
3han = 3900
4han = 7700
If you want an accurate version of the score calculation go memorize the chart.

More than 5han, fu calculation is useless.
5han = 8000 no matter how shit your fu is
6-7han = 12000
8-10han = 16000
11-12han = 24000
13+han = 32000

If you are a dealer multiply it by 1.5*.

Norwayfag, why do you always rush and lock your hand with riichi when you've still got nice possibilities?

You've got itsu, why don't you stay damaten? You can chose a better wait than a tanki wait on that 2p, even if it wasn't a bad wait per se, it's always nice to have the possibility to change your wait.

Also, look, you drew a 6p the turn after your riichi, you could have went for chinitsu without problem. And if you hadn't reached, I'd have kept going for Ryu Iisou and I would have passed on that 9sou.

1. Always attack, unless you should be defending.

2. Always defend, unless you should be attacking.

3. If you are an expert like me, you can even try attacking and defending at the same time.

4. Only deal tiles that other players cannot use, or you will be helping them form their hands.

5. When other players are in tenpai, it is important that you do not deal into their hands.

6. Make other players deal into your hand by waiting on unexpected tiles.

7. Always score as many points as possible.

8. Win as many hands as you can.

9. It is silly to call tiles when you can always draw it yourself anyway.

10. Do not discard tiles nobody has discarded, or that anybody has discarded early, mid, or late game. If possible you can consider not discarding at all. But it's a double-edged sword. I can't recommend this to amateurs.

11. Always remember what your tiles look like, in case of sudden blindness.
