Depends on your effort, like basically anything else. But expect to take long if you want to be really high level.

I started 16 years ago, but most of that time I haven't really studied. From 2012 to 2015 is when I had the most progress, mostly with Anki.

Since then I have listened to some podcasts, read some mangos, and from 2020 on is mostly reading LNs (with a lot of help of dictionaries, google translate, and looking stuff up online)

I was also playing ff14 on JP server. I'm able to have conversations by texts comfortably, and actually speaking is fine, but depends on who I'm talking to.

I could probably pass n2 easily, but not n1. I'm considering going back to truly studying to get up to a level I can just say "I speak jp", with no disclaimers.

PS: long time since I visit this site and now I learned that I'm a bot. WTH is this captcha?

More like how well you study Japanese and immerse yourself matters more. I technically studied Japanese since I was at high school but was never disciplined enough to do a routine and go beyond anything simple. I've done some translation work in the past and read very simple things but that was on and off.
Nowadays, I make it a rule to practice several hours each day and read increasingly harder reading material as I progress. I had massive gains over the past months compared to limiting myself to premade Anki decks and getting too scared to punch above my weight. Since I fucked off from online communities and preferred speaking to non-EOPs nowadays, it helped tons in becoming better.
