Does reading jp-subbed anime improve your reading ability? Is it the same as reading books? I feel like the audio is helping me too much, but I'm not sure. VNs have voiced lines too, right?

明 is made of the sun and the moon, the brightest things in the sky, so it means bright. Easy! learning kanji is so fun! But 明らか, 明くる, 明く, and 明かす are still 不明, and you certainly can't read any of it aloud.
Learning a vague english meaning and taking note of the component parts is basically step 0 of learning a kanji before you learn accurate english for the different readings and choice compounds.

What kind of a notebook/paper do you recommend for writing in Japanese?

Up until now I mainly used normal squared (5mm X 5mm) paper, and it works fine for kana and less "intense" kanji, as well as making sure that all my characters are more or less consistent in width. However now I'm learning more complex kanji and I find it pretty much impossible to write them consistently and legibly in those small squares. Should I switch to lined paper?

reading 1984 and just realized chinese is basically newspeak

'It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn't only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what justification is there for a word which is simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in itself. Take "good", for instance. If you have a word like "good", what need is there for a word like "bad"? "Ungood" will do just as well -- better, because it's an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a stronger version of "good", what sense is there in having a whole string of vague useless words like "excellent" and "splendid" and all the rest of them? "Plusgood" covers the meaning, or " doubleplusgood" if you want something stronger still.

There are things I'd like to read but are pretty niche so I know they'll probably never get ripped, and I don't mind actually paying money for them. >A famous British writer is revealed to be the author of an obscure mystery novel. An immigrant is granted asylum when authorities verify he wrote anonymous articles critical of his home country. And a man is convicted of murder when he’s connected to messages painted at the crime scene.
>The common element in these seemingly disparate cases is “forensic linguistics”—an investigative technique that helps experts determine authorship by identifying quirks in a writer’s style. Advances in computer technology can now parse text with ever-finer accuracy. Consider the recent outing of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling as the writer of The Cuckoo’s Calling, a crime novel she published under the pen name Robert Galbraith. England’s Sunday Times, responding to an anonymous tip that Rowling was the book’s real author, hired Duquesne University’s Patrick Juola to analyze the text of Cuckoo, using software that he had spent over a decade refining. >One of Juola’s tests examined sequences of adjacent words, while another zoomed in on sequences of characters; a third test tallied the most common words, while a fourth examined the author’s preference for long or short words. Juola wound up with a linguistic fingerprint—hard data on the author’s stylistic quirks.
>He then ran the same tests on four other books: The Casual Vacancy, Rowling’s first post-Harry Potter novel, plus three stylistically similar crime novels by other female writers. Juola concluded that Rowling was the most likely author of The Cuckoo’s Calling, since she was the only one whose writing style showed up as the closest or second-closest match in each of the tests. After consulting an Oxford linguist and receiving a concurring opinion, the newspaper confronted Rowling, who confessed.

Chinese is just as nuanced as any other language
It sounding vague to you is the same as newfag dekinais being completely bewildered by wa. They just say things in a fundamentally different way that sounds weird to you because they are a language family from the other side of the world who evolved indepentently.
And "proverbs and references to classical writing" aka chengyu/yojijukugo are much better than replacing every other word with retardedified english like modern japanese loves to do

The Cure Dolly stuff is imho good but you are better off with the book/pdf, the videos are insufferable because the voice synthesis is so bad. Not only is it grating on the ear and hard to hear properly, the Japanese intonation is terrible and the grammar benefits will by undermined by bad speech habits.
Read instead and then watch a movie or TV with simple dialog so you can hear the grammatical insights and basic vocabulary in content. Boring TV interviews and the like are good too, as the verbal pace is often a bit slower and there isn't background music in the way. News programs are good because Japanese newscasters stick to formalities and very standard enunciation. The news has to be comprehensible to anyone from middle schoolers to old people and they treat news reporting like a public service instead of goofy entertainment.

It's a couplar verb. That's why だ doesn't follow an i-adj, the meaning is already bundled in. This also means putting an i-adj in front of a noun is exactly EXACTLY the same as putting a verb in front of a noun to mean "N that is X".
Also, な is a conjugation of だ, so putting n-adj+な in front of a noun is also the exact same verb-followed-by-noun pattern.

It's weird that it's not explained day 1, since it seems neater.

it's weird that you don't understand how a word can function as an adjective in a sentence. the fact that a sentence can be grammatically complete without a copula does not make an adjective the verb of the sentence.

if the word describes a state and can form the main part of the predicate of a sentence, you can loosely call it a verb, even if there might be some pedantic reasons not to that are beyond what the learners of the language need to know
