been thinking of reading The Tale of Genji in its historical form
there's a lot alluring points here, femoid author during feudalism, precedes Western cultural influence, early example of psychological fiction, the older stage of the language
on the other hand I suspect the differences in grammar, orthography, vocabulary and even cultural context would probably be too difficult without consulting Japanese sources
I guess I have to do the "monolingual switch" but it's difficult to see myself doing that without actually moving there

Learning a vague english meaning and taking note of the component parts is basically step 0 of learning a kanji before you learn accurate english for the different readings and choice compounds.

What kind of a notebook/paper do you recommend for writing in Japanese?

Up until now I mainly used normal squared (5mm X 5mm) paper, and it works fine for kana and less "intense" kanji, as well as making sure that all my characters are more or less consistent in width. However now I'm learning more complex kanji and I find it pretty much impossible to write them consistently and legibly in those small squares. Should I switch to lined paper?

People forget that RTK was invented in the 1970s before there was the internet or flash card software (or a reason to learn Japanese other than to actually live in the country). It's an outdated, extremely inefficient method of learning Kanji that people in year of our lord 2023 who know better and have infinitely more exposure to the language thanks to the internet shouldn't be doing instead of just learning vocabulary.

Outdated suggests that it ever had a date in which it was good, but it doesn't even meet the minimum requirement for learning kanji and there were legit offerings at the time.
Oneill predates RTK by like 5 years, and would be the perfect intro moonrune book, but sadly it never got an update so it's toyo era.
Sakade is from the 50s I think, and at least has the essentials and gets kept up to date.

The Cure Dolly stuff is imho good but you are better off with the book/pdf, the videos are insufferable because the voice synthesis is so bad. Not only is it grating on the ear and hard to hear properly, the Japanese intonation is terrible and the grammar benefits will by undermined by bad speech habits.
Read instead and then watch a movie or TV with simple dialog so you can hear the grammatical insights and basic vocabulary in content. Boring TV interviews and the like are good too, as the verbal pace is often a bit slower and there isn't background music in the way. News programs are good because Japanese newscasters stick to formalities and very standard enunciation. The news has to be comprehensible to anyone from middle schoolers to old people and they treat news reporting like a public service instead of goofy entertainment.

It's a couplar verb. That's why だ doesn't follow an i-adj, the meaning is already bundled in. This also means putting an i-adj in front of a noun is exactly EXACTLY the same as putting a verb in front of a noun to mean "N that is X".
