Medicine's thread is as silent and calm as the hill she lives in. Day after day, nobody dares to get near the poisonous hill, so she sits calmly, inspecting the flowers, mixing new poisons. Sometimes Eirin comes to invite her to do something, but outside of that Medicine's days are very monotonous.

Just so you know, Medicine has two bodies: one is a doll without internal organs, and the other is a body made of poison. Unlike tsukumogami who make a magic body in imitation of humans, there's no way that Medicine's poison body can imitate human organs and functions. And, as it is made of poison, it's likely that it never gets dirty.
So, Medicine is an always clean and cute doll.

Many people forget this, but Medicine is a flower girl too. She takes care of the poisonous flowers in her hill and is happy when they grow well. Well, for me she pairs quite well with Yuuka, but they don't have much interaction in canon.

During that one Gartic Phone stream from late December, one of ZUN's first call was Medicine playing with Pooh. Since the TH19 roster seems to be animal based and it is a phantasmagoria game, it appears to be quite likely that ZUN is foreshadowing something.

It's a nice short story. It's not that hard to find if you search for it on Google, it's free to download. However, I must admit that after reading it once I couldn't comprehend it.
Basically, it's a story about a girl that's almost dying of melancholy, boredness. Her father (actually her brother's suggestion but the father goes along) leaves her out on the street and let passerbies propose different treatments for her in order for at least one to be effective.
One streetworker boy notices her gaze and tells them to leave her out on the street at the cold freezing night. Her parents accept it, then the boy visits her at night and at morning she's cured of her disease. The basic idea is supposed to be that love, love was the Medicine for Melancholy.

All along the text it's possible to see multiple places that inspired ZUN: the girl is compared to a doll, she has blonde hair like Medi, she is left out on the open alone like Medicine was, etc. But what I find most interesting is that love is the Medicine for Melancholy, and if this is something that we have to assume for our Medicine as well, this suddenly makes this cute doll become 2000% cuter.

Medicine is love! Love will change Medicine and heal her broken heart. How cute, isn't it? Medicine is a very cute doll.

I personally prefer her without joints. Her poison body at least has no joints, and we aren't sure which body is the doll one. Even then, there's no ZUNart of joints, and I think she's cuter with smooth skin.

Most youkai get their energy by harassing humans. Medicine, however, lives in a hill far from any human habitation. Her life energy is poison, so the field of poison that she lives in must be her source of energy.
However, she has been shown eating already. I like to think that Medicine is a picky eater, with an appetite almost like that of a child. If it's not something sweet, she will not eat it, and she would be very annoyed if you tried to make her eat it.

She is cute, but not consciously presenting herself as cute. She's a young youkai, inexperienced and curious, so her cuteness comes from her scenario and personality. She likes being alone, with her suzuran field; however, she's not the edgy girl of her scenarios anymore, she's someone that genuinely is trying to get to know more people and broaden her horizons. She talks to Reisen and Eirin during her ending, and in mangas she appears together with Alice and Eirin, so she's clearly making an effort, but she's still not the type of girl to go to a shrine party and drink sake.
Meeting her would be difficult. The place where she lives is hated and abandoned and I don't think she would take kindly to random strangers; you'd really have to prove your worth to talk to her. Perhaps showing some knowledge on poisons would be a way to get her attention. She still dislikes humans, so it's a hard task. But I still want to be her friend.

From what I understand, the most common type of impurity is the impurity of life and death. However, there are other forms of impurity in Shinto, like childbirth. I think that Medicine being entirely poison might be somewhat impure. In the latest game Seiran comments on the bad atmosphere of Hell. Obviously that's caused by the overwhelming feeling of death around her, but I think that other things that may evoke death, like poison, might have a similar effect.

i'm curious what makes you guys become a fan of medicine, for me it was 2009 touhou fanfiction about an unnamed guy and his quest to find a certain box and open it, it was a very schizophrenic comedic story but not quite lolsorandumb as it usually was around that time. anyway medicine was one of the heroines in that story, her character goes from the canon depiction of wanting to genocide all human in the village (depicted in light hearted and childish manner) to slowly becoming a girl in love. the proccess is written in a very subtle ways as she, a young girl who is not even human tries to analyze what exactly is the strange feeling that she feels around the protagonist. then i got interested in her character, read all the official material and references and listened to her theme and all the arranges and she's quickly becoming one of my favourites even after all these years.

I think we can just make it past 100 days. Medicine had a great thread last year, but it had lots of image dumping without anything to talk about. This year, almost every post has some text, and people are having good conversations about Medicine, so I think this reflects well on the quality of the thread. But this is honestly happening across /jp/, I believe the board as a whole is better than last year.
Still, Medicine is cute, so I'm happy that her thread is good.

Not every event that happens in Gensokyo is covered in the games and manga. I'm happy that nothing bad has happened to Medi, and if we see her again soon I hope she's with some friends. She appears as a background character once with Eirin in a shrine festival, so she's definitely more sociable now. Medi is cute and her lack of appearances means that we have more freedom to imagine what she might be doing. I think she just enjoys the slow everyday life at the Nameless Hill. That must be more than enough for her, looking after the flowers and reflecting about the days.

Good point, doesn't really awnser my questions though.
Things such as her appearances in manga panels should be taken with a grain of salt cuz that's purely an artistic freedom and has nothing to do with ZUN per se.
And I don't think that the lack of canon info has a positive impact on her character at all, even if people have the "freedom" to imagine, there's still a huge hole of uncertainty and lack of what they can do with her, overall the more a character do in canon the more we can write about it so I don't really get the point.
Now it's not about Medicine's popularity heck it's not even about her appearances primarly, but the fact most Touhou fans don't know shit about this character is hilariously sad (better laugh than cry)
Like, even the so-called "Lore masters" clearly don't know what they're talking about when covering Medicine's character, heck, now I think that Medi's TouhouWiki page should get a total rework because that shit does more harm than good the way it is.

Ah, I'm sorry. Somehow I missed the point of your questions.
I think there's a big chance ZUN will bring her back, if he has the time. Medicine is an interesting character and she might look a bit isolated lore-wise, but that's a perfect setting to be expanded in the future. ZUN chooses randomly forgotten characters to get more lore like Ran in the recent game, so the lack of Medi makes me think one of either two things:
1) she is getting good at making a few friends, trying to understand their hearts and learning something about herself. Eventually she might reappear to develop this side
2) she is slow at learning and still unsure about meeting more people. A few characters might be able to talk with her, but she still is wary of interactions.
Personally, I think the lack of lore makes it easier to develop her in different ways. There are some three regular Medicine artists that I follow and each one interprets Medi differently. Besides, she probably has more lore than is apparent in the surface. It's fun to reread things like her entries in the printworks and the story her name is from and noticing new details that make me appreciate her.
And about many fans not caring about her... I don't really care, honestly. I just care that there are enough artists that I get a steady stream of Medicines through the months. Not that people caring about a character is bad, but I don't have my experience with her hurt by the lack of discussion. I'd be more than happy to discuss her here if you'd like, I'm curious about your vision of Medicine.

It's true that ZUN is currently giving the less-developed characters of the series a much bigger role and Medicine might not be an exception, though you have no idea of how much I expected a Medicine appearance in literally anything that ZUN's been releasing not just Canon but frankly anything from fanworks, doujin music to mere mentions in the fandom.
When I first joined the Touhou fandom I thought that it was the best community one could ever dream of and I partly still think like that... If It wasn't for the stupid and sometimes downright disrespectful threatment Medicine gets from the (western) fandom, of course.
And by disrespectful I mean that people don't know (and frankly again don't even try) to know what her character is all about, combine that with the fact that Medicine doesn't have any fanworks that really stick-out and you breed a feeling of resentment, sometimes i feel like I can't do anything but argue a fucking lot just to watch her character getting trashed.
It's fucked-up, I really Really REALLY Love Medicine, she is just perfect but I'm too unfortunate to even wish to work on something creative to her right now, the reasons are very personal and I don't feel secure to expose them here at all.
The only thing I can do now is watch and wait for the future.

Yeah, sometimes her portrayal in fanworks leaves a lot to be desired, but honestly I barely consume anything aside from art from the western fandom and I interact with people nowhere else but here. I guess I really don't mind the lack of constant discussion about her; I still think it's nice for her to be mentioned every once in a while, but at least I have been fortunate enough to avoid most retarded views.
I really like the art Medi gets. She also got a nice game recently (although I haven't played it yet), her scenario is cute and easily replayable in PoFV... I hope one day I can create something for her too. But until then, I'm pretty pleased with Medicine. Though I guess I would like to discuss her lore more.

Thinking about Medicine's past raises questions. Who made her? It wasn't Alice; does that mean there's another skilled dollmaker in Gensokyo? Did she originate from outside Gensokyo? Was she named Medicine Melancholy by another or is that a name she chose?
PMiSS alludes to her possibly being a ventriloquist doll. Could she still have vague memories of her act? Would she view it as a partnered relationship or a master/slave relationship? Perhaps that's where her desire for doll liberation comes from, whether as part of her act or as a result of her being directly manipulated for entertainment? Could she have grown an attachment to her owner, a forgotten love that turned into a blanket anger towards humanity after being abandoned?
Why was she abandoned? How did she remain in such good condition after being abandoned for long enough to turn youkai? If she knew the circumstances behind her abandonment, would she forgive her owner?

Medicine has great potential and could produce a real standout piece of work in the hands of a talented creator.

It's hard to say for sure, but I think she was made outside. She's a western doll, and there simply isn't that much demand for these in Gensokyo. If we remove Alice, we don't know of many characters that would seek such a doll. The fact that she was still discarded at the Nameless Hill is strange. I at least would never throw away such a beautiful doll. But perhaps she was thrown away in the past? Like, in the 19th century? It isn't impossible. After the initial Meiji years westernization was going on strongly in Japan, and it isn't impossible that a high-quality western doll would be imported. It's harder to imagine someone importing a doll today; most humans don't have easy ways to communicate with the outside world and the few characters we know were capable of crossing the border before 2005 don't seem to have any interest that would justify bringing her.
Now, the fact that she's mentioned to be like a ventriloquist doll is intriguing. If we look at the original story Medicine for Melancholy, the girl is mentioned to look like a doll; during the story, she's so weak (and lethargic) she can't even move herself or speak that much, requiring to be brought outside in bed. It's safe to say that the circumstances affecting this girl might be similar to those affecting Medicine. Knowing this, I'd say that it's hard to believe that Medicine has known love. The original medicine for melancholy is love, so perhaps Medi is the cure for someone else?
As for her resentment towards humanity, much of it comes from being abandoned obviously, but looking at the description of the Nameless Hill, it is mentioned to be a place where parents left young unwanted or frail children to die (or be picked up by youkais). This only makes Medicine being abandoned stranger: was she abandoned with a child? Perhaps the parent left the child with their favorite doll? Perhaps, some of the resentment Medicine has towards humans is actually the resentment the souls of the dead children had towards their parents who abandoned them? Perhaps Medicine is actually a child who died and possessed a doll?
Also, it's important to say that Medicine is not always explicitly referred to as a youkai. You might think this is irrelevant, but she clearly says multiple times that her existence is pure, and her body is neither alive nor dead. What powers her body is poison, the poison of the flowers that killed the children. She's also never stated to be a tsukumogami.
Yeah, Medicine is fascinating. If my thoughts weren't so disorganized perhaps I could write something for her.

That's in general terms. But Medi doesn't have the traditional characteristics of youkai, and she explicitly defines herself and is defined by others as a special type of being. I'm not saying there's zero percent chance she's a youkai, but you shouldn't assume that just because she isn't human or a kami. In some works, fairies are counted among youkai; in others, they're compared closely to gods. Tsukumogami have kami in their name yet many times they're counted among youkai too. The only things we know for certain is that Medicine is a doll and at least one of her bodies is made of poison; nothing more. We can at best speculate, and I sincerely believe she's not a youkai in the strictest definition.
