sure, we get LLShu and Makaihu threads decently often, but it's been a bit since the last general PC-98 thread, and considering most character-specific threads for these guys tend to die early outside of those cases (which tend to stop being character-specific very quickly anyway), it couldn't hurt to try creating a consolidated thread to discuss PC-98hus in general again.

I find it a bit funny how Orange is always left out of the LLS cast discussions. Yuuka is obviously the most popular, Getsus, Kurumi and Elly have their own fans too but Orange is forgotten.
i looked up the previous popularity poll and she is below ufo tokens, Tsuchinoko and the fucking Kosuzu's slug plush.

It's such a drastic redesign compared to every other character in the series to have gotten a touch-up, it's hard to believe that there wasn't some underlying factor. Not sure what it would have been, though

I'm generally very impartial to a lot of game OSTs, but Kana's theme is one of the few that I really adore.
I'd like to think Kana just left the shrine, though. Breaks my heart if that's the case.

Unfortunately for Kana there was a lack of foresight on her end when it came to choosing the Hakurei Shrine. It seems sensible enough. It's a shrine, it's got to have visitors, but while it does in a way, it's not exactly the kind of visitors you'd want as a poltergeist seeking to haunt others, and while PC98 Reimu is a pretty cute and happy gal, even that Reimu would get used to Kana fairly quickly, i'd wager. Poor Kana's dream of being able to haunt others is vanishing once again.

She's definitely a little awkward at times. I always see her scythe as bigger than it actually is so I just go to the other lane where only the yellow bullets are, even if i'm no longer hitting her as MarisaA. She sometimes gets annoyingly close which makes some patterns really difficult, moreso on higher difficulties.

Rika's my favourite PC98hu, but I'm not sure of what people think of her.
For me, she's one of the few characters that genuinely dislikes Reimu, and she is preparing a master plan to defeat her. She gets her tech from the outside world and mixes it with magic, but whether she gets help from the kappa is unknown. Either way, she's quite skilled at magic, to have created so many bakebake

Rika is based. She’s one of the few humans that is worthy of being an EX boss just by virtue of her technology. She has no magic, but makes up for it in spades with her engineering prowess. I’d like to see her return to see how she interacts with the kappa. (Also, if she runs into the Moriya crew, Sanae might convert her to the church of mecha.)

I don't know if I would say she has no magic. Her tanks are of a different type to those of the outside world, even using symbology like the yin-yang which is highly reminiscent of magic, not to talk about the Evil Eye Σ. I would prefer to think that she is a magic engineer because she says that she created the monsters around the shrine; frankly, some are clearly mechanic like the turrets, the falling masks and the dots? could also be mechanic, but I think the bakebake are magical. She does have magical power, just not danmaku prowess, but at least that's what I see

2hu isn't a catering kind of series to begin with, ZUN's got a vision and things he wants to say and that rarely involves re-using characters beyond the main cast. He can be swayed but he's rarely receptive and seems rather tone deaf to fans. His close circle like Judasmario might be able to prompt him about a few things but that's the extent of it, or very specific cases.
In a set of interviews, it is supposed that what prompted ZUN to bring Flandre back in 17.5 or the manga was a drawing he saw at an elementary school. In his mind Flandre's still that elusive Extra boss, not the #1 character in the 2022 popularity poll. One could argue this unfortunately has the same results since younger fans are easily swayed and are only beginning their 2hu journey which will sadly be guided towards the 1000th retread of EoSD content from fans (Additional data was released by Toho vote's site showing various stats from the people who voted a given character. You can fill your age in the questionaire, so the age brackets for people who voted for a given character are available. They range from 65% to a bit less than 30% for the lowest characters. Flandre is the character with 65%)

Aunn and Seiran aren't that popular either but they made it into the playable characters.
I agree that a PC98hu getting into normal games is unlikely but a phantasmagoria type game is perfect to bring back a character without concerning yourself too much with the impact it will have on the following plot (look at Yuuka, she appeared in pofv and hasn't had a significant appearance since then).
Out of all characters I think that Yuuka (already appeared in Win games) or Mima (huge meme status that ZUN HAD to hear about regardless of him being out of touch) have some chances

He did say "It'd be difficult", which i'm 99% sure means no but hey, I guess you can never tell if ZUN suddenly feels a wave of marketing in his veins and decided to lie for the sake of it when asked about Mima in 19.
Mima isn't really a huge meme either, that's a western thing. Her reputation in Japan is more tame although there's still her recognition as the most important PC98 character that never left the era, being in 4 out of 5 games and being an important of Marisa's character and all.
Characters like Seiran may not be popular but they don't suffer from the strange relation ZUN has from PC98 and while I can't recall where it had been said, I do believe ZUN did claim 19 to be the opportunity for underutilized characters to have their time to shine, and he has a lot of choice given how under represented 3rd Gen 2hu is as a whole.

I like what he does, what can I say.

Finding a good AiW is hard actually, at least if you don't want that stupid intro that everyone copied from somewhere.
It's either too fast or too slow, very few hit that sweet spot, and fewer use the correct instruments imo. Piano isn't quite right, maybe church organ or harpsichord would hit that initial note like that FM synthesis did. This is again the best one I could find, but that repeating bit is too lound and it's really annoying.
