The tanabata stuff is just a cover for Rika reminiscing on how Satoko came to live with her. Though it's still weird because it involves Rika only moving into the shelter after Satoshi's disappearance, and talking about how she and Satoko weren't even close, even though they're supposed to have always been best friends and Rika moved out of the shrine house before that, since she supposedly found her old home uncomfortable.
Maybe it's supposed to be the very first world, and she decided to befriend Satoko much earlier in all subsequent worlds? But that only raises further questions, such as how Satoko survived HS when Rika's involvement in the research was so critical.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe that OG Rika would even be allowed to live on her own. It makes some sense after she starts looping due to her accumulated life experiences making her far more self-reliant than normal children, but you'd really expect that ordinary little girl Rika would just be living in the Kimiyoshi household.
Higurashi's original world has always been a questionable point, since so much of Rika's behavior is informed by her nature as looper. Things should be pretty different from how things look like in the Higurashi story we see.
Maybe it would've been better if Rika's invitation only happens after she started looping, and the first world actually involved Satoko being sent to an orphanage/mental hospital or dying from HS.

That story does seem to say Satoko didn't move in with Rika in the original world and bringing Satoko is a deviation from how the timeline originally went, which got Hanyuu worried originally.

When Rika talks about thinking about Satoko by herself as a possibility or a future that didn't happen, I think it's just her trying to avoid thinking about it too much, which is why at the end she outright dismisses thinking about it more, and tells herself what matters is how things are now.

Before Gou/Sotsu Umineko was getting more content than Higurashi. The last new Higurashi content had been Hou in 2014. Even as far as manga go, there were just a couple of anthologies which are basically doujin.

Meanwhile, Umineko had gotten two rereleases with new content.

That said, R07 being busy with more stuff makes more new shirt Umineko stories unlikely, especially when the last time R07 did take his time to write Umineko scripts it was all for Mei, which a lot of people don't want to count.

Higurashi got entirely new arcs in ps2, Umineko never had anything remotely close to that. Higurashi content is way more plentiful than Umineko content. Higurashi Kizuna, the last console release of Higurashi that had original console-only arcs came out in 2010. After that it has only been adaptations of the VN and one booklet getting turned into console VN arc, and probably only because it was an anime already (Hajisarashi).

Like I mentioned, Hou came out in 2014 and had the last original Higurashi arcs for a long time (with Kamikashimashi, since both Outbreak and HBS were just VN conversions of existing material).

Umineko had Hane in 2011, Tsubasa in 2019. Also, although not really "original arcs", the
Symphony of Catbox and Dreams console port (2021) adapted several old text booklets into VN format. And then you had the heavily changed Episode 8 manga, which ran from 2012 to 2015.

I'm not saying Umineko overall had more content than Higurashi, I'm saying after Umineko came out it was consistently getting more content than Higurashi, before Gou/Sotsu came along.

There was hours spent on Takano's schizophrenic reasoning for changing her name to mean 34. It's the motive for the entire setup, and therefor more important than anything else. Lambda can be inspired by Satoko but still far more deeply involved with Takano's "plot". Higurashi is implied a gameboard with an absolute certainty of victory for the Takano side. This is implying Takano was her piece. Satoko was on the Rika side before Gou. This means For Higurashi Gou to work Satoko would have to birth Lambda, then Lambda would have to go back in (meta)time to lose against Rika and Satoko in a game she already knows the end of. If you look at R07's interview post-Sotsu, it's pretty clear the game mentioned in Umineko is supposed to be seen as Gou/Sotsu, since he attempts to spin around the situation just to explain how the ending is supposed to be Rika's miracle unexpected by the game master, which wasn't really how the actual anime framed things, but he spins it around because it's clearly supposed to take that spot in the backstory (you know the whole story about Bern finding a miraculous answer the game master could never see).

Lambda can still have blessed Takano since it's outright said in Gou/Sotsu Satoko existed in some form before her current existence, but it's clear most of Lambda's character as shown in Umineko originated after she lived as Satoko.

Not only her relationship with Bern, all the depreciating humor about her being dumb and even the way Lambda's certainty/hard work is framed (she only puts effort into something or rewards effort if it interests her, like how she barely bothered with court documents, writing just a couple of pages, while Bern wrote hundreds) fits Satoko better than Takano.

But she lost her memories for some unknown reason. I basically see it as like the Battler -> Tohya situation, where that led to her basically creating a new personality/self (which also explains why Lambda's character is so focused on the Higurashi game even though she should have less ties to it than Bernkastel), although aside from the obvious Bern bond, it's not confirmed just how much came from living as Satoko since we haven't seen that pre-Satoko "Lambda" yet.

Then by the end of Gou/Sotsu she's making the Lambda/Bern promise. The Gou/Sotsu Another End short novel, a direct R07 script, shows Satoko acting even more Lambda-like down to helping others she believe are putting effort, in addition to outright featuring Bern's and Lambda's sillhouettes at the end (she also talks like she hadn't been in Satoko's own body for a while at the start and takes a while to recognize herself).

Yes. That wasn't in mine at all, but I think the story is better without it besides the reader needing to assume what happened to Keiichi. Otherwise it ends like you described, absolutely saddening. The selfless decision to watch over Satoko would have most certainly led to a happier life.

I was rereading a few threads from earlier this year and I it made me realize how much I want to read the original treatment of Umineko. Was Jessica supposed to be Beatrice somehow? What was the full extent of Virgilius' role in the story? How was Black Battler, who would also appear in Episode 3 with Virgilius, to factor in at all?
It's tempting to get lost in the sea of "what if's".

Virgilius would change the gameboard with his false theories, so that's probably how Black Battler would appear in that context.

Jessica is just a bundle of red herrings to the point that her not being involved at all in the end just comes off as dumb, but I don't think she was ever meant to be more than that. R07 admits having changed Higurashi's culprit while writing Tatarigoroshi, while he claims he forced himself to never change the identity of Umineko's culprit.

it's interesting, the little short story he put out around episode 3 that he claimed was part of not retconning the culprit... contains a retcon itself, along with ep3. in ep2, lambda just shows up because she's bored and bern is there, with no sign of any preexisting relation with beatrice; then in ep3 she's suddenly the very reason for beatrice's existence. pretty weird, huh?
honestly i think the culprit might have been the only thing he didn't retcon.

You know, looking back, you have a point. At no point in the ep1 or 2 hidden tea parties, it's suggested Lambda was Beatrice's master or sponsor or anything like that. They do seem to have a relationship though, since Beatrice is said to have called her, and Lambda even in ep2 seems to know everything about Beatrice's game style, but there's no reference at all to Lambda being above Beatrice.

In fact, several times they talk like Beatrice, Lambda and Bern, Miracle, Certainty and Endlessness form a triangle, something that's quickly thrown away by the time of episode 3 with it becoming just Certainty vs Miracle.
