Every game she gets a slight change in her fashion, it's kind of adorable really how Marisa and Reimu keep their general look, but also make efforts to try different approaches.

I like canon Reimu. Despite her laid back attitude she still does her duty even when she's fairly certain there isn't a problem. The fact she does things in a sort of direct and aggressive way usually gets the problem solved before tea time and ultimately the more senior youkai respect her for it, she lays out the rules and makes sure Gensokyo keeps working. The general youkai community arn't the kind of people to take polite requests seriously without a show of force.

You can't really say that for Reimu. She started out wearing a shrine maiden outfit but more and more of it became red while the sleeves became more and more detached every game. She's also had short hair like twice.

Marisa.. well she changed in the original old games so it's fine. Also I like the M apron, it's so much better than looking like a maid.

I understand what you are staying, but from the start of the Windows era of Touhou, Reimu has more or less kept a similar style with different accessories, she's still instantly recognisable by her distinctive style but it's nice that it sort of evolves as it goes along.

I see much of the PC98 era as ZUN working out exactly how he wanted his protagonists to look.

To be fair, most other notable little girls of the series will try to shoot her down as well, often without provocation from Reimu herself.

Like you said, it's part of the humour of the series that ZUN uses as a in character explanation for what is basically a vertical shoot em up with boss fight after boss fight. The quirky story of it also makes light of other heroines, Reimu isn't some clichéd paragon goodness, she's a lazy shrine maiden doing her duty so the villagers will donate to her shrine. It's part of why I like her.

God damn, everyone was kind of a bitch in PoFV. It was like a bitch royal. Yuka was surprisingly relaxed in her own route though, outside of that she's pretty mean and even sometimes in her own route... but mostly she lets Reimu assume she's the one doing everything then corrects her after beating her down.

It's a rare character that isn't kind of a bitch. Marisa has plenty of bitch moments, though admittedly it was Alice who provoked Reimu in Imperishable Night with Marisa following once she realised Reimu wasn't going to calm down.

Fanon scenario. Though it's probably fair to say Reimu lives a modest life with little in the way of spending money, the villagers aren't going to let Reimu starve. I wouldn't be surprised if she had some kind of arrangement with them so she at least has rice. She's kind of necessary for Gensokyo to even exist.

Youkai aren't youkai if they don't attack people at some point, or at least this is what Akyu writes in her chronicles, it's what the human population believes and is mostly true.

Youkai in Touhou basically translates to pretty much any monster and is pretty all encompassing in the setting. They do distinguish between different types, but ultimately they still count fairies in there with vampires in a very broad sense.

It was at the very least acknowledged in the spell card rules that youkai need to be able to cause trouble or else they will have problems. Exactly what these are isn't clear, but it's one of the provisions of the spell card rules that it's easy for youkai to start incidents, but easy for humans to end them in a mostly fair fight of beautiful magic duels. It allows even the weakest of fighters to have a chance of defeating the strongest, which is why it's perfectly feasible for Cirno's route in PoFV to have happened. It's also why power levels are completely bullshit, they don't matter, no one really uses their powers to their full effect.
