Using sage as a way to "insult" someone's post or thread is just completely wrong and a retarded misuse of a good feature that is so popular in sites like 2ch and Futaba. Fuck, iichan and 4-ch do it right. It's just 4chan and 4chan's lame knockoffs that fail at using sage.

The true meaning of sage means that YOUR POST isn't worthy enough to bump the thread. It's ironic, because you think that you're insulting others while you're just, in fact, insulting yourself. Yes, sage can be used when posting a derogatory comment in a thread that you don't want to bump, but posting with just the word "sage" accomplishes nothing but contribute to spamming the board. The trend of replying with the name of a tripfag and sage is even worse, as it accomplishes nothing and only serves to increase the e-penis of whoever you're "attacking".

The sage feature was never meant to serve as an implied insult or general disagreement! Why people started using it that way is beyond me. There are plenty of reasons why one would choose not to bump a thread with his reply. For example, bumping threads with stupid one liner replies should be discouraged and those people should be coerced into using sage instead.

I want to use sage, yet I almost never do it on 4chan because people will jump on me thinking I'm insulting their post or something.

That part is wrong. There is simply _never_ a reason to _not_ bump a thread you like. People rarely browse past the first page. If you like a thread, you want it to be on the front page where people can see it. And therefore, only threads you don't like deserve to be kept out of peoples' sight with sage.

I really don't get what's so complicated about this. There is no such thing as "polite sage". Every sage is a rude, disapproving sage that says the thread isn't worth being on the front page.

You know, we had a thread like this early this morning.

I used to be with the the other anons in /jp/, using sage properly. It still does have its place, but is to be used in normal threads. In troll threads, you may think you're "saging properly" by responding while still not bumping the thread, but the response is the problem.
For every sage you use in a troll thread, that's fine, but the OP or his hanger-ons are going to respond to those posts with bumping posts.

The solution is to not post in the threads. I know this is hard for many /jp/ers, but we had a troll thread last night where someone just told everyone to stop responding to the OP.

The thread fell off the front page and to oblivion in like four minutes flat.
You may be thinking "oh, but he'll just samefag and bump his own thread" but if they're going to do that, they'll do it whether or not you respond, and you can only make it worse by responding.

I don't quite get people who really doesn't understand sage or "polite sage".
First of all, on a board like /jp/ and other slow boards, threads are kept alive for days unless they are downright ignored. Even if you like a thread but don't feel that you are contributing anything special to it, you actually could use sage in order not to bump it.
The thread won't dash right to page 10 just because you didn't bump it either way and as it will still stay on the first pages for quite a while it is actually quite plausible that someone else will bump it with a post more contributing to the thread and in the meantime one wouldn't hog the top of the front page uneccesarily.
Each time the thread is bumped it will stay on the fron page for a good ammount of time anyway and that way most people that would find an interest in the thread could see it and when they have joined the thread it doesn't matter as much even if it isn't on the top at all times.
By using sage when not contributing one can leave the front page full with posts of higher quality to some extent, and if the thread where you used sage is in fact an interesting thread then there are most likely other people posting more contributing posts and bumping it anyway, adding more people to the discussion.
And even if you use sage when posting an unworthy post there is nothing that says that you perhaps might come up with a more contributing post that you could post bumping it later and bumping it in the process.

If you don't like a thread you ignore it, trolling and useless posts can still provoke responses.

Sage isn't that hard to udnerstand.
