Me, me, me! America’s ‘Narcissism Epidemic’

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/30312181/

I was reading this, and I instantly remembered /jp/ (I guess the Internet in general) with its tripfags vying for attention and formation of cliques that put certain tripfags in godly status with an entourage of adoring fans.

I tripfag a little for those same reasons too. It's really made take a look at myself and try to become more humble and less attention-seeking or trying to have anonymous like me or try to become popular in an anonymous image board.

I don't know. Narcissistic personality disorder doesn't seem like something most /jp/ users would have (since many of us have low self-esteem), but I do wonder a bit why tripfriends feel the need to stand out in a predominantly anonymous community. I'm a bit doubtful that it's due to rare mental disorders however.

>"One Toshiaki (the default name for an anonymous poster ) is as good (or as much a loser) as another." There is no reason for anyone to feel like they stand out as someone important in this Japanese community. If nicknames were used, as the creator of the board Hiroyuki Nishimura once explained in an interview, those people would gain authority in this network over time... an authority which would make it harder for others to tell them "what you say is wrong/boring/lame." Nishimura says, “All information is treated equally; only an accurate argument will work.” And: "People can only truly discuss something when they don’t know each other."

I adhere to the behavioral/cognitive theory that narcissistic personality disorder develops from people who are treated too special when they are kids. True, that isn't directly related to self-esteem, but I was thinking that kids who were always put on a pedestal are more likely to develop the disorder. And normally I would associate bloated self-esteem with that, rather than low self-esteem, but whatever.

msnbc or no, get the fuck out, propaganda britshit. If you want to bitch about narcissism and/or entitlement, you could tackle your own country's lordships system.

Only thing new and narcissism-related that comes to mind is "reality TV stunts." And we can't tolerate this disruptive-ass "reality TV stunt" crap of late, but all that we need to do to get rid of that kind of "cultural terrorism" is make it illegal to make somebody rich for pulling these kinds of stunts.

OTOH having a name to every post as it's advantage, as it creates a record in the mind of the readers of what that poster says and does. This enables the community to self-moderate, driving out terrible posters and making them feel unwelcome.

Opinions aren't really seen on even ground under an anonymous system because it enables unchecked sock puppet use and civilized conversation becoms impossible where there are no consequences to posting something shitty.

I still like anon posting though, posting with a name feels restrictive and dirty.
