Yes, I'm assuming it's the 'n' sound you think is different? English actually has 2 different 'n's in speech; one using the tip of the tongue near the front of the roof of the mouth, the other using the back of the tongue at the rear of the roof of the mouth. The word 'running' uses both 'n' sounds.

Do you guys ever use Japanese songs for listening practice or keep that purely for entertainment? And if so do you look up the translated lyrics first or try to work them out blind as you get better at jap?
I'm at the point where I can make out a dozen or two words in a song depending on the difficulty and maybe 1 or 2 phrases just by listening without looking anything up, although I actually got pissed because there's one song by the ulfuls that I've been listening to for years and I only just released the chorus is just them singing "一つ、二つ、三つ、四つ、五つ" two or three times

I like Japanese songs but when it comes to language learning it's like switching your windows to Japanese. Doesn't really teach you much but it's a fun passive progress tracker. You just notice yourself understanding more and more of it raw as you get better. But just like you sometimes can't understand lyrics in English some stuff you will just struggle to hear properly even if it's easy Japanese for you

I don't like Anki. I want cards like the kana study in the OP. Choose the cards you want to study and drill them until you can't fail them anymore. At best Anki might be nice to remind yourself of things you've already memorized but it's not a form of study at all to answer a card right one time and it get buried for 4 days.

The japanese branch has a lot of white people in leadership positions. And even among the non white ones there's people with Chinese names, very few actual japanese people in leadership positions.

Thats because you can't just force yourself to memorize thousands of readings with just anki like you can with kana. You use it as a daily supplement while reading. in theory memorizing kanji might help you memorize words but it seems extremely inefficient because you will need to grind words anyway
if you're doing let's say 20 cards/day and grind 3,000 kanji that's 150 days/5 months
and if you want to achieve a level where you can read fairly comfortably 8,000 words will take you 400 days
in total 550 days or 1.5 years of daily consistent anki at 20 cards/day

All I can think of when I see this is how much this dude just must lack a culture of his own. I grew up in the midwest and my family has a ton of ties with the "culture" if you will with that place as well as the mexican culture that spills over. Our traditions and how we eat and act etc. Not to mention overall American and European culture.

Hi All, I've been self studying on and off for a few years but I'm still only at N5 level.

I really need to pass N4 this year as I'm moving to Japan for work and need a minimum of N4 for my CoE/Visa.

I use Memrise daily, have anki and a few other textbooks etc.

But everytime I sit down to study, I just feel super overwhelmed by all of the potential things I could study, and have no idea where to start. I also have ADHD which makes things even harder.

Can anyone give me a few sugestions as to what I should focus on during a study session, with the goal of confidently passing N4 by October.
