New learner here. How do you learn kanji?
I'm not asking about spaced repetition or strategies like that, but rather how do you learn the kanji in the first place?
I can stare at a squiggly symbol for a minute, then stare at a second squiggly symbol for a minute, but if you then show me the first one, there's a good chance I will not recognize it anymore.
If the kanji has a reading attached to it, then I might recognize the word based on the reading though.
Should I write out the kanji? Should I try to trace its symbols in my mind? Just looking at it seems very ineffective and seems to produce very poor results for me.

So, how do you study each kanji symbol?

Not that I can think of, but I can't really think of much learning that you do where you only stare at something. Usually you try to write it down or to somehow use what you're learning as part of something else.

The easier, more recognizable kanji, like 日 or 中 or 人 etc are fine, but the more complex they get the less I seem to remember, eg 道 is hard for me to recognize.

there most likely are results, but they're just not immediately apparent to you. in the beginning, what you're doing is more like "training your brain's general ability to learn to recognize particular kanji", so if you only look at the results for "recognizing particular kanji", you're going to see few, but that doesn't mean you aren't making good progress.

it's not "only staring at it". you learn by trying to associate it with some information (such as what the word roughly means or how its read) and by repeatedly attempting to recall that information through the association (= looking at the word in Anki or in a text and trying to figure out what it means or how it's read) and then verifying your attempt (= looking at the answer in Anki, hovering over the word in the text, seeing if the sentence makes sense with your recalled meaning, getting laughed at for the rest of your life when you misread something, and so on)

if you're literate then you probably involuntarily see kanji in your head when listening though, not completely though. but it doesn't matter if there's kanji or not. in any case they don't process sounds in terms of onyomi, they process them in terms of words, like any other language.

in my country, during high school, you dont have multiple choice exams, instead you have to write essays. you get 90 minutes, everyone sits in a room supervised by the teacher and you have to write about the topic given to you by the teacher.
at the end, you have to count your words, and the teacher will calculate your error quotient, which is the amount of spelling mistakes you make, multiplied by 100, divided by your word count.
i usually got an error quotient of around 0.5, meaning for every 200 words i wrote, i made one spelling mistake.

And I am not sure my anki is configured properly/if I don't do the hard,easy,again (buttons) properly because there's words at the back end of the deck that I just keep fucking forgetting since the app does not show them to me with high enough frequency.
