New learner here. How do you learn kanji?
I'm not asking about spaced repetition or strategies like that, but rather how do you learn the kanji in the first place?
I can stare at a squiggly symbol for a minute, then stare at a second squiggly symbol for a minute, but if you then show me the first one, there's a good chance I will not recognize it anymore.
If the kanji has a reading attached to it, then I might recognize the word based on the reading though.
Should I write out the kanji? Should I try to trace its symbols in my mind? Just looking at it seems very ineffective and seems to produce very poor results for me.

So, how do you study each kanji symbol?

>have you struggled with this in the past before japanese?
Not that I can think of, but I can't really think of much learning that you do where you only stare at something. Usually you try to write it down or to somehow use what you're learning as part of something else.

The easier, more recognizable kanji, like 日 or 中 or 人 etc are fine, but the more complex they get the less I seem to remember, eg 道 is hard for me to recognize.

>> No.43643507

and that's why you go slow in the beginning and why you immerse from week 1. two months is about how long it takes for the initial burst of motivation to fully run out, so if your Anki review pile is too big too handle on the worst of days and you have no noob gains from immersion as extra motivation to keep you from quitting, you're likely fucked
>>43643303
>Just looking at it seems very ineffective and seems to produce very poor results for me.
there most likely are results, but they're just not immediately apparent to you. in the beginning, what you're doing is more like "training your brain's general ability to learn to recognize particular kanji", so if you only look at the results for "recognizing particular kanji", you're going to see few, but that doesn't mean you aren't making good progress.
>>43643392
>but I can't really think of much learning that you do where you only stare at something
it's not "only staring at it". you learn by trying to associate it with some information (such as what the word roughly means or how its read) and by repeatedly attempting to recall that information through the association (= looking at the word in Anki or in a text and trying to figure out what it means or how it's read) and then verifying your attempt (= looking at the answer in Anki, hovering over the word in the text, seeing if the sentence makes sense with your recalled meaning, getting laughed at for the rest of your life when you misread something, and so on)

I'm (attempting to) translate something, but I've come across something unfamiliar.
I know the word for games or playing is 遊び (asobi), but I came across "お遊び" (osobi). Do you think it would be farfetched to translate it as "charade"? For context:
このお遊びにはいつまで 付き合えばいい?
I'm thinking something along the lines of "How long should I keep up this charade?"

My impression of japanese in zelda ティアキン:

わらわは瘴気に古の邪封じ貴殿監視砦でイカズチ其方賢者故お主鳥望台汝

i aint understand dis speak. i never really played any games or anything. it's crazy how different the language is to normal conversations that i'm used to.

the biggest mindblow was how many words for "you" and "i" i'd never heard of even though i've checked lists of all the different pronouns many times before.

i think it's one of those pseudo scams where they advertise something that they don't own and then plan to go pick it up at a local electronic shop and ship it out overseas..

Struggling to understand what ここじゃなんだ means in ここじゃなんだし近くの公園行きましょうか.
One thought I have is that なんだ is 何だ and it's like she's saying "doing it here is nothing" -> "It's not special to take your picture here (so lets go to the park)".
Another is that it's a contraction of ここではなのだ, but I don't feel confident about what this could mean here. Maybe like "If we are definitely doing it here lets go to the park".

if you're literate then you probably involuntarily see kanji in your head when listening though, not completely though. but it doesn't matter if there's kanji or not. in any case they don't process sounds in terms of onyomi, they process them in terms of words, like any other language.

They can write by hand, but they often need to lookup how to write certain words. The Japanese even have a Kanji test for the Jouyou Kanji, and many Japanese natives who have finished high school cannot pass it. Not really the point of my question, though.

in my country, during high school, you dont have multiple choice exams, instead you have to write essays. you get 90 minutes, everyone sits in a room supervised by the teacher and you have to write about the topic given to you by the teacher.
at the end, you have to count your words, and the teacher will calculate your error quotient, which is the amount of spelling mistakes you make, multiplied by 100, divided by your word count.
i usually got an error quotient of around 0.5, meaning for every 200 words i wrote, i made one spelling mistake.

in japan, i bet this wouldn't even be possible, japanese people can't write by hand because they dont know kanji lol!

Ah, I see. I know you are supposed to recall the entire reading of a word in Kanji, but in practice I find I do read out the Kanji individually by their On readings in my head. I usually remember the meaning of the word first, though. Everything happens in seconds, but it led me to wonder if I should be recalling the On reading by relying more on the meaning of the word, or just focus on the graphical picture of that Kanji fully. For example, when I see 範囲, I think Han - I by focusing on the shape of each kanji. Would forming a meaning association with On reading be faster?

>> No.43653238

>>43653108
I don't know, I don't think having a particularly intentional approach will matter that much in the end. eventually you'll just know the word 範囲 well enough that you just go through it like any other word in a sentence without really thinking about it. the unconscious mind will do the work for you if you just keep immersing

I need to find some handbook or similar with actual exercises because after a year or so of doing Core 2.5k on and off, I've seen a lot of improvement, but my motivation is at an all time low.

I know it's a matter of shutting the fuck up and doing it, but I barely can be arsed to do new words, I just do repetitions. And I am not sure my anki is configured properly/if I don't do the hard, easy, again (buttons) properly because there's words at the back end of the deck that I just keep fucking forgetting since the app does not show them to me with high enough frequency.

Any good handbooks? I think I will switch it up to where I'll do normal anki repetitions and then just do lessons, I just need something that isn't dogshit like Minna no Nihongo.
