What's the deal with Kore-eda anyway? It seems that plenty of Japanese aren't fond of the man's work or at least try to downplay his achievements based on the comments i came across on the internet. Like back when Koji Yakusho won at Cannes couple days ago, plenty of news media reported on his win but seems reluctant on reporting Kore-eda's somehow. Was it because he did some gig with Koreans back in the day?

I got inspired to make this work of art from a SEAland erotic comic.

In the story of the erotic comic, the mayor of a town sponsors the wedding of a couple, and not only that, he gave them lots of favors, like giving them good work positions, with the wife becoming one of the staff of the mayor. The husband was bragging to others that he was close to the mayor and he was getting special favors from him, but he doesn't know, the mayor was fucking his new wife. The mayor convinced the two to forego their "honeymoon" because she might get pregnant too soon, and focus on earning enough money first to start a family. The mayor then seduces the wife and devirginizes her. Sometimes the mayor would come over their house and have a drink with the husband only to slip some sleeping powder onto the drink, and have sex in front of him. Later after many trysts, the mayor gets the wife pregnant. Soon the mayor hires a hooker to seduce the husband, which the wife finds out and causes their separation (there's no divorce in SEAland). The husband and wife are still in good terms though, she calls him sometimes, but in actuality, she is being fucked by the mayor while on the phone. Later the prostitute would confess to him what happened and he was devastated that all these years he thought the mayor was taking good care of him and her wife, and now the mayor is bedding his wife and they have three kids already.

I watched Dragon a few years ago, and it was pretty cool. I've heard good things about Angel Dust and that it's similar to Silver Case, but I've never had a chance to watch it.

It's indeed kinda similar, as in it could pass as a case like KamuiDrome (they're different of course but you'll get what I'm trying to say here if you watched it).

The Furuya Usamaru adaptation of Suicide Club is basically a different tale as it focuses on one aspect from the film and expands on it. And by the way, the other film in the duology is Noriko's Dinner Table, in case you didn't know.

If you enjoy deep and interwind series/universes with a rich lore like Suda's Kill The Past, I recommend Oshii's The Kerberos Saga.

Besides these great recs >>43696322 Pistol Opera (2001) is the most Suda thing I can think of, in the vein of Killer 7. Other Seijun Suzuki films are also worth it.

Shinya Tsukamoto is also a director that has a similar punk worldview like Suda and Gakuryu Ishii. Bullet Ballet (1998) is kinda like that segment in 25th Ward where Shiroyabu goes nuts.

I loved both because both are my favorite creators and I enjoy both of their styles. Furuya's distinctive art style adds a lot to the atmosphere. And by the way, there's a a Suicide Club novel written by Sono that connects the first film with the second more deeply, if you're interested in reading it.

Nta, but Tsukamoto is my favorite director as well and I'm also not a fan of the Tetsuo movies or any of his fantastical features really. I think he works better grounded in reality and letting the surrealism in through formal touches rather than being the focus unto itself. Tokyo Fist deals with the same issues and ideas as Tetsuo and I think it's able to speak about them more cogently and thoroughly using grounded sports drama as a jumping off point. I also love Tsukamoto's more downtempo, melancholic side and there isn't really room for that in the Tetsuo movies. It can't linger in the overwhelming urban modernity the way Tokyo Fist does, or deal with Bullet Ballet's existential pondering or tackle mental health like Kotoko.

I get what you're saying because I myself prefer more realistic films but Tetsuo is an exception for me. Regardless of its genre, story, themes, etc, I believe that Tetsuo is Tsukamoto's most unique work. You can feel his passion beaming all over it, not just simply as a filmmaker but as an artist. Tetsuo is a piece of art and that's what makes me go back and rewatch it over and over, that Tsukamoto uniqueness that fills it. The pure adrenaline rush when you watch it. It’s gruelling and horrifying, but its high-octane energy is infectious. It never forgets to show its big iron heart. A beautiful chaos, exhausting to watch but satisfying when the credits roll. Hairdresser fag goes off by himself, almost dies from falling in a pit you'd have to be a moron to get close enough to fall into, and then goes back to camp and says "hey, if they want to go off by themselves and die, who cares lmao" when he was literally just in that situation? Finally got to catch Toyoda's Shiver (and on the last day). What a dazzling collision of sounds and visuals, with hypnotic taiko drumming and the stunning Sado island's footage, the immersion was even more amplified here than in PLANETIST, I felt like I was there, a very invigorating and encompassing experience. It's his mind-bending visual flair coupled with his trademark unpredictable aesthetics, he can craft some of the most absorbing atmospheres in cinema, both in setting and in narrative.
