Just finished up Tsuki:re's Ciel route, and after reading the true route ending and I don't get why Roa let himself turn into a split personality + give up on eternity.

Like I get that he's lost his love for Arcueid, but doesn't that happen in Arc's route + Ciel normal as well?

He didn't. That's just what happened as a side effect of Arc's release. He couldn't merge with Shiki in a parasitic manner and so became symbiotic.
The reason Roa decided to help Shiki is because Shiki hit him where it hurts. Basically attacked his pride since Arc just vanishing without ever looking at them would be too much. It's highlighting Roa's humanity.
Roa has a warped perception of his feelings. Rather he never understood them. In a way he's not entirely unlike Arcueid herself. Arc never would be able to understand herself without the events of Tsukihime and Roa until the end never realized what he felt at their intial meeting was love. He instead viewed it as a loss of his own purity as a theologian and scholar. Roa's original personality is also basically diluted with all the successive reincarnations so the navigation system he becomes in Ciel-True is essentially that original base being at the forefront as a separate(not merged with the host) concept. He also finds Arc's fall distasteful. The way Shiki broke her entirely is nothing like the original one that destroyed him and so he loses respect and interest. The one he remembers isn't the princess who would be ruled by her own emotions. She's supposed to be more distant and a higher being as we can see via all the other versions of her.

You're under the impression Roa won't just go on living, researching and pursuing his own agenda(s) as always. Roa basically seems to make a new topic of study every reincarnation going by his research into principles and IB. As Shiki says, in the end Roa is always the victor. He'll just wait until he reincarnates again so everyone dying is nothing to him. He wasn't going to lift a finger. That's what would have happened had Shiki not spoke up and struck his ego. I think that's what I'm confused about. I don't understand why Roa in Ciel normal wouldn't also be in that same state of not giving a fuck about reincarnating anymore since he also sees Arc as fallen from the symbol of eternity Roa originally saw.

Roa continued to perform research for differing methods of obtaining eternity yes, but I genuinely don't think Roa would have continued to do so after seeing Arc fallen (or dead).

Like theoretically, even if Roa took over Shiki's body in Ciel normal I can't imagine he'd still be obsessed over eternity since he should have realized with Shiki's thoughts that Roa's true desire (wanting to eternally meet the old, "perfect" Arcueid) will never be achievable since Arc has changed so much.

I'm reading Tsuki:Re for the third time and I noticed that indeed, the dog in this scene is anything but normal. First there is the fact the dog's howl was something only Shiki could hear, unless Akiha, Kohaku&Hisui heard the dog as well but were gaslighting Shiki. Roa was helping Shiki stay alive though in Ciel-True as that was beneficial to him. But ultimately there was a limit and he was prepared to let Shiki die because as stated above, he'd just reincarnate again.

I don't get the feeling that Roa is going to fall apart without Arc. He can do other shit because ultimately he continues to progress. You should just see Ciel-true as a rare exception because at no other point is he so pure and close to the original. Shiki's words likely wouldn't have worked on any other incarnation. For starters Shiki never would have said such a thing in Arc route because their dynamic is entirely different. Roa is nothing to Shiki there, just an eyesore to be removed. In Ciel-Normal he's just trying to take over and control Shiki before being killed(except in bad ends when he does so).

And for the record, Arc in Ciel-Normal is never really dead. Just defeated and back to sleeping. You say that Roa can never meet the old perfect Arc but that's actually framed as an inevitability and happens in Melty Blood when Roa defeats Arc whose overcome by her emotions. So long as Arc is alive she will eventually succumb to sleep and eventually CM. This is the result of all TA whose lifespan is measured by their eventual sealing of themselves to repress their instinct or becoming a fallen TA and losing their identity. Either way the point is that's when CM would win. It's going to happen even if it takes thousands of years. Though their is a slim chance that the Arcueid that was born of Shiki's killing and experienced such powerful emotions will be able to retain herself. Even then it seems like it will take an intervention from Shiki as he says in his own words, to take her back by force.

By definition it's negatively impacted by the need to sell characters and so forces them into worthless episodes or chapters the story doesn't need them in and results in so many 1-dimensional characters that would be better off not existing so the others could maybe have a chance at being decent.
