I still don't know about the Zodiac roster. It's a fine theory, but it leaves way too many out of the 19 uncovered. Having 1 or 2 that don't fit the bill is fine, but 7? That's a 3rd of the cast.

Knowing ZUN and his love for niche mythology, it might come from some other animal-related myth. Either that, or it's all just a coincidence.
I'm still hoping for the "1 representative for each Touhou mainline game", myself.

It's very possible the normal heroines will not be representing any of the animals, in which case that cuts it down to 5, at most, assuming no other regular protagonists show up. We got 3 newhus in PoFV, 4 if you count Aya's game debut. It's hardly unreasonable to think the Zodiac theory applies.

There's quite a bit of characters you can choose from 3. Even Mima's plausible as she was first playable during that game.
3 is even meta-relevant since it's the first Phantasmagoria game.

We don't have a pig Touhou and we also don't have a proper snake Touhou. Suwako controls the Mishaguji, but she's not a snake. There's also no proper Monkey 2hu, but they can at least be one of the Komeijis because of their original myth, or even Nue.
That's two or three Touhou's that will most likely will already be a newhu. That's 9 zodiacs, with + 2 with Reimu and Marisa. That's 11 characters, and 8 unaccounted for.

I just think it's a red herring and at most there'll be maybe a few more (Namely the beast leaders from 17/17.5) but I subscribe more to the theory that like in PoFV, characters for whom this is the 1st playable appearance get the stage that they were first fought in. So Sekibanki, Nitori, and Takane.
Sekibanki has a card in HBM and the Kappa & Yamawaro are both important to that game's story too, and 19 brings back cards.

You'd have to remember that the Beast Metropolis is completely separate from Gensokyo. Yuuma being outside of it was already weird enough.
Yuuma is really the only 2hu that fits the bill to go outside of the beast realm for the three known yakuzas, especially since we know she likes to act on her own.
Yachie isn't one to go outside of her realm to do her own work, and Saki's basically a dumbass.

Assuming Reimu and Marisa are not counted as Zodiac characters they are going to take 14 slots in total. That leaves 5 free slots, newhu boss and midboss are guaranteed so that leaves us with 3 slots for random characters which will probably go to Kasen, Sanae and maybe a newhu or somebody like Cirno, Aya or Sakuya

If Yuuma could go outside then so do Saki and Yachie, technically. Yachie has shown to visit the protag in one of WBaWC ending. They just need a good reason to go outside and this game's plot is perfect for it.
But I feel like ZUN would disappoint again by missing another perfect opportunity to include fitting characters. I also just realized if the game use beast spirit mechanic again it'd be weird for a yakuza leader to use another beast spirit than her own, so they might become background characters instead, Yuuma included.

Primate could refer to humans too. It's just ZUN's way to force fitting character title for a game, like Reimu's title of beast exterminator.

Thing is that all three of them are not incident solvers, they're the ones that create incidents. They have no stake in Gensokyo unless they want something from it.
It's the same reason as to why it's difficult to add Lunarians to Gensokyo-related incidents.
If the Yakuza leaders were in 19, it would either mean:
- That they created the incident, which is very unlikely as it would probably the newhus that create it, if there even is one
- That they're taking advantage of the incident, which is too much like 18 (with everyone taking advantage of the cards)

Eveyone native to Gensokyo can be added to the roster for pretty superficial reasons. You'd have to make an excuse for the three.

The game's story already give them a reason: everyone will be fighting over a desolate land for their own purposes and that includes the yakuza bosses who likely have more ambitious goals, to the point beast spirits become the game's mechanic again.
It's not quite like 18 where everyone try to monopolize the cards. Here they are literally fighting over an object in battle royale. Safe to assume most of the cast aren't there to "solve" the incident.

i wonder if that's really what the story is going to focus on next. this game sounds big enough to end the current arc, tying togheter the animal yakuza and the black market incident. we could call it the "greed arc" or something.
anyway, tons of characters fighting for control of the land sounds like a good ending for the current events. ZUN han never been good with foreshadowing, but there are some signs of a big conflict coming after this

Yes, it also makes Okina's whole plot make more sense. She started the whole fuss in 17.5 just so she could lockdown the oil in Former Hell, which is closely connected to Gensokyo.

I think that biggest unknown is how many new characters we will get. I think its safe to say that we gonna get classic duo of mastermind + henchman so 2 is bare minimum.
But i expect at least 3 more new characters so really fitting them into zodiac could be easy.

Both the 3 characters confirmed on the rooster and the 3 shown gang leaders fit into the chinese zodiac so its a matter of the pattern being collective schizophrenia or actually real

But lets be real, yuuma didn't have a reason to be a goat while leading eagles, saki didn't have to be a horse while she leads wolves and yatchie is a dragon leading otters,its just weird and the rest of the zodiac is surprisingly easy to fill with recent characters of the franchise, not even needing to go pre-UFO

The matriarchs come in sequence except for one spot. And snakes are often used to represent the dirty, cheating types.

Probably the typical protagonist choices; Reimu, Marisa (I don't think she's part of the zodiac despite OP), Youmu, Sakuya, Sanae, maybe Reisen even if she overlaps Seiran, and Cirno.
That makes seven, +12 zodiacs, which gives you 19 playable characters.

We might get other MCs from previous games (Sakuya, Youmu, Sanae) though since Sakuya and Youmu were playable on Phantasmagoria before their chances are lower. The rest of the roster might be someone related to the chain of incidents: Chimata, Megumu, Keiki, Mayumi, etc or even Okina, or new cast that's not part of the zodiac.
Remember PoFV introduced 4 new chars. I figure ZUN won't waste 2 years gap for mainline title to make mere 1-2 new chars.
