I left Ranko’s socks on a bit too long and they really messed up her legs. Most of the black is gone now but this yellowing has taken its place. This is her 4th stain treatment now and the yellow spots aren’t getting much better. Do I need to just keep working on it or are they fucked?

Spoiler for nudity.

>> No.43187815

>>43186874
black dyes are often multiple colors mixed together, and they all have different physical/chemical properties
it's possible that specific dye component doesn't leach as well with the stain remover, and you may just have to keep applying it
alternatively, get some new legs / leg vinyl and only swap in the stained legs for high-rise stain-prone socks (you don't have to worry since they're already stained)
I don't know everyone's dolls by name, which one is Ranko?

I've decided to 3D print the BJD.
I live in a Western shithole in the midst of hyperinflation, so in spite of being 'first world' it's no different from Cuba as far as goods availability goes.
And this is coming from someone that's been to Cuba, and was born in an Eastern European shithole.

I'm going to do it, anons.
I'm tired of having to depend on someone to "provide" me with the means to make myself happy, and I'm tired of being judged by stupid fucking cunts who don't know the first thing about life.
So, even if I can't buy a doll, or afford one, I'm not going to be stopped from owning one.
I'm going to use my old fucking printer, and I will finish-carve it by hand with a scalpel if I must.

Heavens be witness to these words, I didn't work as a mechanic, machinist, then engineer, carpenter, tailor, CAD designer, and a programmer for years of my fucking life just to be cucked from owning a comfort object by a shitty globalist market that's hell-bent on making sure I can't get what I bloody want to be happy.
I may not have the resources, but I got the damn tools, time, and energy to make it real.

Thank you, fren :)
I will keep working at it.
I'm so fucking tired of having so little in my life that I have control over; I suppose in a sense, finishing this project is as much about exercising what few skills I have towards something I actually love, as it is about the end result (a humble entry into a delightful hobby.)
I will post updates.
Printing the knee joints at the moment.

>> No.43191768

>>43191742
Having a goal to work towards is empowering not just for its own sake. The sense of progression and accomplishment can give us strength to progress in other things, too. I'm glad dolls have given you a new passion project, anon. I'm someone who isn't very good at assembling things or understanding how to do most crafts (partially lack of practical exposure, partially an issue with spatial realization in my brain,) so this year I ordered a birdhouse to assemble. The kind with nails, not the kind with dovetail joints that slot together. I think it's important to learn how to do new things -- no one has to be the best at anything, but being "good enough to get by" is always a worthwhile thing to chip away at. Being able to fix small things (and to know when to call in a professional) is always worthwhile. So pursue the things that inspire you, anons -- if it makes you happy, it's never a waste of time.

>> No.43191827

>>43191768
I couldn't agree more, anon.
While merely my opinion, I have always believed that one should always strive to do things oneself - even if the result isn't as great as something that's factory-packed, it will, at the end of the day, be something YOU made, and that itself is an incredible fact, on many levels.

And as I appreciate your kind words, I too want to congratulate you on your project, and to wish you good luck putting it together, anon!
Next thing you know you'll be building desks - unironically, even if you live in an apartment, build a desk, best fun I've ever had. Hand tools are a bonus source of fun.

And remember, fren, practice makes perfect, so kudos to you not only for trying to make something, but also know that if it doesn't end up perfectly, that doesn't mean it's perfectly good enough, and that you won't do better the next time.
So, cheers to that!

Do you think it'll be more vinyl? Or just distributed differently? I'm looking at it this way, though. This could work out for people with Azone/AP girls who have larger hip/bust measurements than DD. more size options for body parts
and I'm not talking about the plus-size stuff Danny's currently getting hit with
just stuff like different length legs, hip widths, etc. for the same base model
the four DD sizes are partway there but it seems more scale-oriented, any parts interchangeability is mostly for manufacturing convenience
like say, if I wanted to make a friend group of 4 MDDs, one tall one short one curvy one "normal" but still all MDDs, that's really not possible
yeah I know it would be hell for the outfit market, and even creating molds for the less popular parts might wipe out any net profits from selling the popular ones
but it would be nice
oh also more poseability across manufacturers
Volks has great wrists, Obitsu has great elbows/knees/ankles (and necks with AP torsos)
I'm not saying copy each other but at least try to come up with something equivalent
and then none of them have a doll that can bend the torso forward…

Expenses so far (Canadian dollars):
>$23 for skin tone filament (only $10 of filament used)
>$4 for the primary colors of dollar store acrylic
I obtained this skin tone by mixing 70% white with 10% red, 10% yellow, and 10% brown.
>$9.99 for KRYLON sealant
>$0.50 for one sheet of 220 grit sandpaper
>$0.10 for about 5 inches of steel wire
I expect the entire project, clothes included, to be about $50.

She is a Mini Dollfie Dream. You can buy the body and the head from Volks USA webstore (the company that makes them). I believe the head is a modified DDH-22 head. There are places where you can commission a custom faceup for a blank head like that one (like Etsy, or Instagram), or you can try your luck in Yahoo Auctions Japan, where a lot of jp artist sell their custom faceups (but you probably will need to use a proxy service like Buyee, and they are usually expensive)

I kinda miss when strung was the default with BJDs.
Everything was more... compatible, I suppose.
I know you can jerry-rig almost any mechanical hinge to another one, but I kinda liked the idea of a string-based structure.
>can just pull it apart
>no mechanical constraints with hinges, flexible elastics mean essentially "analog" movement, can even modify joint tightness
Most importantly, third-party BJDs were strung too, but now, everyone's trying to imitate internal skeletons, but they suck at it, so all third-party BJDs are not only proprietary / nearly impossible to modify, but the way they come also SUCKS.

>> No.43241350

>>43241205
I've had the opposite experience. Vinyl with internal skeleton poses so much better, and sure you are locked in but its not hard to customize or swap out a part

>>43241350
Well, you know what they say, friends don't argue about tastes.
Some works for some, some works for others.
So, cheers to that!

I can definitely see how the posing would be more reliable with a skeleton, strings suck for posing.
Fortunately, I don't really do posing so much, which is why I suppose I've always been fixated on range of motion instead.

What I do to make things fit is a combination of tiny clothespins, safety pins, and velcro tape. Could be something similar. Just pin out of frame and no one will know!

>>43241205
I've been restringing a bunch of things recently, and they have pros and cons. Pros are that you can string anything together and make it into a whole new doll -- whether or not it looks and functions well aside. Cons are that I have snapped two stringing tools today and if I never have to see elastic cord for the rest of my life, it will still be too soon to do this again. Resin can also be delicate in a way that makes me nervous to take it outside or for photoshoots. Vinyl parts can wear down with time, and vinyl stains if you so much as breathe on it -- but on the other hand, with vinyl you could probably throw it off a bridge and it would come out alright, and the only tool I need to tinker with them is maybe a screwdriver.

are meant to endure the tension of drawing and holding elastic taut under sometimes significant strain and are a lifesaver compared to other options, including making my own out of wire, which I have done because I didn't have anything at the time. Look, I hear you, fren.
I guess I string dolls so infrequently that it's actually fun for me.
I can see how doing it constantly / not having the right kind of autism to enjoy it can lead to disliking it.

But, I actually prefer a pair of very long-tipped needlenose pliers, very handy.
Do have some chopsticks at home, but those needle-nose pliers are a lifesaver.
Pic related.

>holding things in place under tension
I actually just use a jeweler's vise if I ever need to hold things down for a while, so I don't end up needing tools.
I also have some surgical equipment to aid in installing finicky components, which helps, so I guess who am I to say you oughtn't use a stringing tool.
I guess just never needed to, myself.
Well, who knows!

I definitely do like the wire option, but I guess if you're applying that much pressure, I can see why even a stringing tool would break.
Honestly, at that point, make your own out of welding rod, or hell, even solid steel, since it seems like you're putting a lot of force on those.
Maybe more than they were designed for.
Just carve a hook into the steel with a dremel or rotary tool if you have one (they're $30 on Amazon anyways, great to have, useful for a million things, especially to the scale modeler / hobbyist.)
So, if you don't have one, maybe get one, and then DIY your own tools too.

The original cultural meaning and purpose of these artefacts is not known. It has frequently been suggested that they may have served a ritual or symbolic function. I don't know who needs to hear this, but mahjong replacement marbles are a good size for balls in a ball pit for DDs, and inflatable newborn bathtubs are the best-sized kiddie pool for your MDDs. Stuff for actual toddlers tends to be too large, unless you want to make a resort photoshoot with all your dolls. Pool floaties are inflatable drink holders, the 18" doll stuff is usually too short for DDs but work great for MDD, and the scale miniature furniture people put up on ebay sometimes are referred to as "salesman samples", so use that term to find more. Boar bristle hairbrushes are good for human hair and doll hair. If the fit is too loose, use safety pins to fit it better. If it doesn't fit at all, see if you can bridge the gap with velcro tape. No one has to know. Your local craft store holiday section when clearance hits is a potential treasure trove of props. If your doll can't hold something, try blutac or velcro tape to secure it; this also works for geta, flip flops, and shoes that fit like shit. If you ask nicely, the people at Spirit Halloween will let you use their installations as a photography backdrop. Most people will let you use their space for this purpose as long as you ask first. Get a remote shutter release for your camera or phone so you can take photos without the device moving around, it helps and they are cheap. If you want to try something, go for it, accept that it will probably suck the first time, and then do it some more. And for the love of god, someone help anon with that calendar, he has the patience of a saint.

Thank you for asking after him! I've meant to take photos of him outside, but I've been busy with IRL things recently. Right now, he is sitting on top of a box until I have time to rearrange everything and give him a proper place to sit. I really want to take photos of him with dolls on his back, but I'll be honest, nothing terrifies me more than trying to get him to stand under additional strain. I have a few dolls stands, and I think I will employ all of them to help hold him in place when the time comes. He's great overall! But even the most well-engineered and strung doll can only take so much when it already weighs as much as a pomeranian. I'm still deciding on a name to see which sticks, but I have a few good contenders.

As an aside, does anyone have recommendations of where to get shirts for 70cm dolls? He's not quite that tall, but he's definitely wide enough.

I'll give it a shot, thanks anon. For DD scale comparison, the shirt he wore in his first photos I got before I was familiar with clothes shopping for dolls, and on DDs it's so comically oversized as to be more like a potato sack than a tunic. On this boy it's still a little wide but not nearly as much, and only because it was cut with the expectation that the wearer would have breasts. Those extra 8cm don't fuck around.

>> No.43281622

Not them but there tends to be a lot more drama since resin dolls are easier to counterfeit and a culture has arisen around whether or not you think buying those is okay. It's a discussion I don't really want to have come into this thread since it's less relevant and talked to death already but the gist of it is some people think it's elitist to tell people they shouldn't buy counterfeit dolls since genuine ones are expensive; the counterargument is generally that buying counterfeits actively drives artists out of business since many are small operations, and that it kind of defeats the purpose of BJD collecting since it is a niche hobby about quality over quantity and the art of dolls. There's a lot of info out there about it but you can form your own opinions.
It doesn't come up much in vinyl communities and it's less of an issue if it does because vinyl is generally much more expensive to produce on its startup costs and to reproduce, and vinyl dolls are usually more associated with figure communities which are already averse to buying fake items.

Most resin spaces are very vinyl exclusionary. Oh, you have a DD? Not a real doll! SmD? Not a real doll! That said, I welcome all resin dolls, I'm just here for cute.

First sneak peek cutie of the event!

The tally is 356 photos vs the 235 of I-Doll 67. While my camerawork has gotten better, the lighting has indeed compromised some of my shots.

Some of the rental display booths (the non-commercial ones) had their own lighting. A few times the owners would just bust out a lamp to help me get better photos lol. They were clearly aware of the lighting issues in the venue as well.

I don't quite understand which dolls are full resin or just a resin head on a DD/SDD body or what, like this https://dollfie.volks.co.jp/sd/special/dreamnight/chapter15/sd17ludo.html
quite a few of these at the event

Anyways, I'll see how many of the photos I can salvage with some post processing.

Let the drip feed begin!

It's because basically no one makes a male vinyl doll you can just buy, for whatever reason they don't seem to think there is a market.
-Volks has them, but only through Dream Choice, a service which requires you to go physically to Japan to order them.
-Obitsu makes them, but only up to 50cm these days, and you'll need an adapter to use DD heads. They have released bodies up to 65cm, but they are old and hard to find and have their own problems.
-Granado made a vinyl body and it rules, but they refuse to restock it.
-Smart Doll makes one, but it has some engineering problems that make it a pain in the ass, on top of Danny making it as hard as possible to actually acquire one.
-Visuadoll has made some, but they're also about 50cm tall, discontinued, and hard to find as well has having the typical obitsu aging problems.

Your best bet is unironically to get a resin body, pull the strings through the neck hole of a DD head, and insert the s-hook to hold it in place. I've done this for hybriding things before. Hasn't called any deformation so far, but I'll keep an eye on it.

Beyond that, 2-D doll and Aimerai are two resin brands who make male anime-style dolls of quality. If you're interested in any of the bodies I've listed above, keep an eye on mandarake/yahoo japan auctions/mercari.jp, they do crop up from time to time and if you're lucky, you will find it before I do. (Because I buy every single one I can get my hands on.)

Good luck anon, I support everyone who wants to bring more male dolls into the world.

Thanks for the links! I've always loved this idea of making modern mechanical dolls. It's nice to see there exist some projects that are being developed.

Some years ago Volks (the company that makes Dollfie Dreams) stablished some sort of collaboration with a small company that tried to make automaton dolls, Dollfie(R) Honey they were called I think (video related). I don't believe that project is active anymore, but it was a neat idea.

SmD feet are: 6.7cm x 2.4cm
DD(S,Dy) feet are: 6.5cm x 2.7cm
No shoe is made down that close, as socks and tights need to be fitted too, so a flat shoe for one will fit the other easily.
SmD have other heel feet though, and if shoes are made for them, they won't fit great on a DD, but can still work.

GI is honestly phenomenal from a presentation standpoint, especially the music and the voice talent. But in terms of gameplay it's a snoozefest yeah. Star rail is underwhelming compared to its predecessors unfortunately yeah. The strategy is kinda there but it'll take a while before it ramps up to enjoyable levels.

I wish we had better options for doll guns in the US. I've tried several Goat guns but they're nearly all too heavy and big for MDD, though sometimes you can make them work with much difficulty. Goat guns did update their site sometime recently to show actual scales instead of just saying they're all 1/3. For example the 1911 that I bought which was way too big is now shown to be 1/2.5 on the site. They do have one gun (two variations) listed as 1/4 scale - the MRAD (black) / MK22 (tan; currently sold out as of this posting). I got one the other day and it's much more appropriately sized for MDD. It's also a sniper rifle with a bipod, so the doll can be posed without having to fully support its weight herself.
