I'm a Yukarifag and I don't have absolute knowledge of the game's lore, so I don't feel entitled to express my opinion with much conviction here.

I just think that Yukari's idea was to be TOO strong, so she went through waves of "nerfs", which translated into less action on her part at important events and key characters not taking her too seriously.

Overall I think she's cool :)

My personal theory:

Yukari was never actually that powerful. She didn't get nerfed so much as she got contextualized. The biggest detail about that is that "Gap Youkai" isn't an actual type of youkai in any myth I can find. More likely, Yukari is supposed to be based on the Theology concept of the "God of The Gaps," wherein people naturally attributed phenomena they couldn't explain with their current understanding of science to supernatural causes. This is also supported by the way the Boundaries she manipulates, and Maribel sees, are very similar in nature to the distinctions of the gods in Touhou, which exist without names, but can't affect much until they take a name, and the limitations and definition imposed by it. Furthermore, it's mentioned that gods, if feared too much, can end up as de facto youkai.

The end result would be that Yukari ends up fairly strong because her nature is tied to uncertainty, the root of all fear, but can't do too much because of the catch-22 that such an origin presents.

nta, but still a yukarifag, there is a folktale about something that exists between the gaps of walls, doors, etc. that some of her lore is based off of. basically, when you're afraid of turning a corner, or think there might be something hiding under the doorway, watching you, it's yukari. it's true though that the "god of the gaps" is a convenient bit of side-lore. it definitely would fit her personality, but idk if zun based her around that.
as for what her powers are, "yokai of boundaries" could literally imply anything. all character powers involve some kind of boundary, the boundary between slave and master, or weak and strong, might be something you'd attribute to seija, yet in 15.5 yukari was able to manipulate it. it might not be so much that "the more defined her powers are, the weaker she is."
my headcanon is that her powers are over the undefined. she is incredibly powerful against anyone who doesn't have an absolute understanding of everything they are interacting with. the slave/master system wasn't defined in a way that left no room for uncertainty, which was why she could manipulate it. if people just had a better idea of what was happening, she might have had less ability to manipulate it, but the nature of that problem was uncertain, even doremi explained it in a poor and unhelpful way. that's why zun says she would get her ass kicked by eiki. it's not necessarily that she is stronger than her (though that might be the case) or even that her moral compass is truly objective, but she holds true to it with such vigor that yukari can't convince her to second guess anything she does.
many of her spellcards are based around quantum mechanics. wave functions are inherently uncertain. i'm arguing that she has the power to decide the undecided, or to ascertain the uncertain. if schrodinger's cat were to live or die based on the uncertain principles of quantum mechanics, she would have power over the boundary between life and death, that is the nature of her power, according to my headcanon, at least.

Okina really was holding back, while also empowering her opponents, and when she ultimately lost, she just encouraged the protagonists to proudly celebrate their victory, because Okina is very secure in herself, and doesn't feel the need to make excuses after her defeats. She has enough social grace to make new friends, and she's succeeded at everything she set out to do since HSiFS, while Yukari is now best known as the village clown.

As much as I like the idea, the method she uses for moon travel puts a bit of a damper on the interpretation.
Certainly it's a strong theme, but to say that's her power is a bit of a stretch. It's more like she's limited to the methods to use her power in the way she ascertains and omits that limitation. Hence why she took her sweet ass time dealing with the Perfect Possession incident.

Opening a way requires the two locations to have some kind of sympathetic link. For most mundane places their connections shift constantly like currents. Often you can't go directly from one place to another - you have to make multiple trips, pausing or walking short distances in-between.

In one book Harry needs to break into the vault of Hades, so he first breaks into the most secure vault in Chicago and opens the portal from there. Turns out the vault's owner actually knew Harry would be breaking in, and was willing to just leave the door unlocked, but didn't because that would weaken its similarity to Hades and prevent Harry from opening the portal.

Harry is only able to tell where to place portals correctly because of an amulet he receives partway through the series; before that (and for other wizards in the series) the portals lead to random potentially-dangerous places so they're used only as a last resort.
