Why is the Touhou Project called the "Touhou Project" anyways?

Is there some sort of secret thing that all the games are leading up to revealing whatever "The Touhou Project" is or something?
What could the Touhou Project possibly be anyways? Or am I completely wrong with this theory?

The series started as a university project for ZUN I think. I remember reading something to that effect some time ago anyway. Touhou means eastern, which should be self-explanatory.

Because he doesn't want to call it a "franchise" basically

It's because it started as nothing more than a programming practice project for his Uni, and he knew earlier work is going to be obsolete, but wanted to retained the lore he created, so he called it a project, and gave it a random ass subtitle instead of calling it Touhou 1, and Touhou 2.
On top of that it's most likely because he considered about making Touhou a multimedia project in-mind from the day 1, as he started Shanghai Alice to sell music, not games, and he seems to be still passionate about writing, and produce all those books, just as much as making the mainline games.

Because jappys think English words are cool but don't understand them (much like how weebs use jappy words). ZUN back then probably dug out some terrible dictionary that translated "Project" as "work" or called upon his long past high school English classes and thought "ahh yes, my 'Work', my creation. That's what I have here"

It reminds me how in English it is known as "team shanghai alice" but in Japanese the correct translation would be "ghostly musical group Shanhai Alice".
so it's correct. Touhou was born for music.

Your first mistake was assuming ZUN was human.
