We are the vinyl thread, so it's fine. Though they're more than welcome to post here, the dedicated resin exists in /toy/ whenever someone wants to make it. I thought it was fun that someone here got to go to an actual doll event, so I wanted to highlight that such events exist in the OP. Thank you for your photos, anon.

Oh cool, I've mostly just lurked, since I'm too incompetent to ever personally own, paint and fully kit out a BJD, but I've always enjoyed looking at the different clothing styles, accessories and photo situations people put them in.
I'll most likely go to the VOLKS event next month as well and take a few hundred photos there as well (hopefully less of my shots are out of focus and with shit lighting this time).

I think most doll owners don't get that involved in the customization process (painting your own face-up, etc). Just buy a cute head on Yahoo! Auctions, get a body, wig, and cute outfit(s) and you're good to go. Or you could even just get a complete doll from any of the various manufacturers.

I'm not sure what to do with her bangs. They cover her eyebrows, and I think it's very important for them to be visible. If I try to comb them to the sides, they fall straight back down, even with wig oil mist. I've been thinking about trying to thin them with thinning shears to hopefully make them easier to style (even bought some), but I've never done that before and I'm afraid of messing the wig up irreversibly, assuming it would even help at all if I didn't mess up. Maybe I could try styling them with a flat iron so they're not going straight down. I just thought of that while typing this - would it work? For now, I'm using these clips. I think they look cute. What do you guys think? I kinda like them. Should I just keep her hair like this after all? Maybe find some cuter clips, of course.

I think you might want to use a curling iron (do they make them that small?) or wig wax + something to curl them over
basically, make them extend out over her forehead instead of laying against it
my MDD's bangs are even longer than that but disclaimer, I haven't actually tried it on her yet because I haven't had time

I use a wet palette to thin out the acrylic paint. It makes the paint not too thick and more easier to make lines. If you don't have a wet palette you can use a damp napkin or paper towel and put it in some sort of container, then place a dry piece of parchment paper on top of it. Also don't put too much paint on the brush. You can test your paint strokes on your fingernail or something to get a feeling of your paint thickness. Patience also helps.

Wiring helped. Cutting the elastic helped. Honestly it's lovely, but the insides are basically just a big hollow space. Most centaur dolls have a hook or something inside to thread the elastic through which helps keep them together... I did what I could. It's not perfect, I'll probly change the styling, he needs a paint job... but by god. He's together. He is in one piece. He can stand, very tenuously. And most importantly, I can finally rest my hands.

I have nothing for him to wear and I am realizing this only now. Any ideas on names?

I don't leave my house much anymore agoraphobia is a very dumb and inconvenient condition to live with, because I should be able to just tell my brain "your anxiety is founded on nothing", but unfortunately getting that brain to listen is a whole other matter. but when I do I try to make time for doll photos. People tend to be positively curious in my interactions, and most assume it's for some internet thing. The more you do it, the easier it will become! Scope out areas you might want to take photos in before you show up to find out when they're least busy, as well. Parks on cold days when children are in school tend to be deserted, for example. I think it's good that you're pushing your boundaries, anon. Keep working on it!

Trimming straight bangs on a wig is really easy, anon.

You need to go slowly in layers. Separate off just the lowest layer/weft of hair against the forehead, it will be very thin and sparse. Trim this to be the shortest you'd want the bangs. Like how short it would be if you went shit that's just a little too short.
Then make another thin layer, comb it over the first, and trim it just a little bit longer using the first cut as a template.
Continue in layers until the hair is done.

So, generally speaking, what's the win rate on these like? Is it one winner per each doll? Multiple winners possible? Put another way, should I shoot my shot for the one I want and hope for the best, or is it unlikely enough that I should recruit others in my life to apply for me (knowing full well that if I win multiples I'll be buying multiples.)

When hell freezes over, I guess. I've been asking them directly about this for years now. They are convinced beyond any measure of actual market metrics that these things are not desirable because most dolls sold in asia are SWS MDDs. Does not matter how some people do so much volume in proxy-buying for Dream Choice that they can run a certified side-hustle providing it to gaijin, the only market that truly matters to Volks (and the majority of Japanese companies) is Japan specifically. It's unfortunate and until something convinces them otherwise, we're stuck like this.

>> No.43078011

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. "No one buys male/tan/DDP," says company who makes it hard as they can to get the first two and promotes the third one so little that I rountely talk to people unaware that there's a size between DDS and MDD. You'd think the popularity of proxy buyers would have clued them in that the market is willing to jump through hoops just to give Volks their money. The popularity of Dollfie Icons as well should really be a sign that people love alternative vinyl colors that don't require a bottle of RIT Dyemore to achieve. Even if they just offer them seasonally (because I understand they have a limited capacity for casting) that would go a long way to helping them meet demand -- on top of enabling them to print money hand over fist. (That sad, male options should really be standard, it's baffling that they aren't.)

What kills me the most about this in particular is that is was a VolksUSA initiative. That's why the joints didn't match the first time around, they wanted it done as cheap as possible. Studio Naiko! This is their doll Moon, and you can get it from Stacy's Pink Ocean: http://www.stacyspinkocean.com/product_v.asp?id=6658

It's very expensive, easily the most I've personally spent on a doll. But then, it is a ten-pound resin horse ass, so this is to be expected. He also comes with a baggie of resin horns -- unicorn, spiral, and bull horns (no antlers, sadly.) I have to say though, this is a preposterously large doll. The extra 8cm over a 60cm Dollfie Dream doesn't prepare you for the size of this. That shirt he's wearing is one I originally got for my DDs before I understood how sizing worked, and you could probably clothe a pair of MDD in there from head to toe. On him? Hell, I'd say it's a little short. Absurdly large doll.

(It will cost exponentially more, but if any of you get one, for the love of god, get it shipped strung. Stringing this broke my stringing tools and took a frankly comical amount of time. It's worth it. I don't know how much it would be, but if I could go back in time, I'd have paid the price.)

I still have the head which comes with this doll, but the one one the body is Spica, from NatsukiBJD, who also did his faceup. You can get Spica still from them on instagram, I believe -- they may have sold them all. Spica is a large head that fits better on a 68-70CM body than a 60cm DD one, I feel -- it's pretty big. NatsukiBJD does simple, shoujo-manga-y faceups that I think worked really well for his expression, personally, and they kept in good communication with me the entire time during both the casting process, and as he was being worked on. I'd personally recommend their work.

Though I did struggle with getting good photos at AnimeJapan last week due to always having to move in a never-ending stream of people who all want to take the shot they want. In that situation I can definitely it helping...

Guess I have something to look forward to when I decide to upgrade to a fancy mirrorless Sony A7S or something...

No, I don't own a doll (yet). I like taking photos and looking at photos of them. I don't know if I'd ever own one.

Here's a little photo of the event. We technically weren't allowed to take pictures of the venue itself (devilishly broke that rule here hehehe~), but it was like this with the left side of the venue being split into several hundred booths and the right side having tables you can rent with your friends people affiliated with your brand/group/circle/company etc to promote your work like in

>Did you feel welcome or out of place?
Both really. I know what you mean with the twitter bubble thing yeah. The Japanese are terminal twitter users and they've constructed an entire culture around it. But if you present your dolls or accessories or whatever to them earnestly and seriously they would 100% accept you.
As for the event, basically I'll never not look ridiculously out of place at almost any otaku-ish event since I'm a very tall eastern European guy (the event was probably 70/30 female to male ratio), but people are more often than not happy to see foreigners attending these events. I didn't have a single negative interaction and if you demonstrate any Japanese knowledge (like complimenting the wig or asking if a certain part of the outfit was custom made) the more extroverted ones would instantly infodump you happily.

I keep an old filament light bulb around specifically for this, it heats up well and put that over the bowl. But you can use anything that'll keep it warm, but not hot. I meant within the 1/3 scale. Particularly when it comes to SmD clothes. DDS and SmDs are closer in size than a DD is to either because the torso length, and hips. So clothes tailored for SmD will fit better on a DDS with the exception of pants being a little too long.

I don't know about the hip joint definitively, but the upper torso frame is the exact same part for DDS and DD. So either arm will attach to the frame, but the DD arm is thicker, so the vinyl shell could get in the way. I'm sure that'll be the problem with the legs too if they connect, as I know the DD thighs are a little thicker than the DDS, and that'll be more conflict as the leg joint sits inside the hip shell.

Something I really appreciate about this hobby is that it will wait for you. When I don't have the time or energy to work on my dolls, it's okay -- they can wait until that changes. In a world where everything seems so demanding, it's nice to have something that doesn't require constant focus and attention. So when I do feel the urge strike me again, it's a bit like coming home.

The "marketing" in an auction format probably plays a big role too. I notice the high end sellers do an elaborate photoshoot, only list a few heads at a time, and never do repeats.

>> No.43143314

>>43142763
You're paying for the head, the faceup supplies (paint, watercolor pencils, sealer, etc), the skill of the painter, the labor time, and usually the "one of a kind" nature of the product.
If the painter has exceptional skill or any amount of fame, their product will be more expensive.
Additional factors include the marketing (some artists may mark up their work for the supplies/time that went into the photoshoot), the personal value the artist assigns to their work, and the potential auction hype that drives up the price. Some heads sell cheap just because the right buyer didn't came across them. Some heads sell high becuase two or more people decided to fight for them.

Collecting Dollfie Dreams is similar to resin dolls in the sense that most people don't collect "stock" dolls, or licensed characters, but buy customized dolls (particularly heads). And the price really depends on how famous or recognized the artists doing the customizations are. Some artists sell their heads for thousand of dollars each, and most of the well known artist will sell their heads for half a grand. The way they present their dolls and the marketing behind it's important part as well. Some artist have an important presence on Twitter or YouTube, with many followers.

I really like her face-ups, she has this rather uncommon but very alluring style (picrel as an example), so I went ahead and tried to buy it. I was kinda lucky because the price didn't blow up that much; I've seen some of her heads going for more expensive prices. Anyways, if the price is right, I might end up buying another one..

Well auction bidding is fully automated. They don't have an employee manually bidding on things if that's how you thought it worked. So I would actually say that it's more reliable than watching the auction and bidding yourself, because there's no chance of you forgetting about it (which I've done so many times with things I was on the fence about), or having an internet outage at the worst time.

>> No.43154874

>>43154143
Problem is that everyone else has the same idea and bids in the last few minutes. Either you miss out or end up bidding more than you wanted in the heat of the moment. Snipes let you set a max price and is automated

Life pro tip from someone who camps auctions like this as a side hustle family were auctioneers. If you're online bidding, bid in weird increments. It's won me auctions countless times to bid, says, $33.33 instead of $30.00. People like the easy-to-tabulate increments by and large; going against the grain can be the edge you need. Additionally, set a hard budget with a soft overflow. "I'm not paying more than $500 for this, but if it's within ~$20, I will make an exception." Don't stretch yourself too thin over a doll. There will always be another doll, anons.

Can someone TL;DR the new Smart Doll frame and has anyone actually measured how much more poseable they are? I wanted to read along but Danny's way of describing things is exhausting in how buzzword-laden it is.

>> No.43159824

Teeth gears for the elbows and knees allow sturdy posing but less fine movements, hip movement is better but still limited by vinyl, older vinyl parts and hands still compatible, fewer unique parts will increase production numbers
Those are the keys, the rest is snake oil.

Thanks for cutting through the crap anon, appreciated. If I see one on the secondhand market I'll snap it up and compare it to the older frames (and other dolls,) but otherwise I'm not particularly moved to get one right now, even if it looks like they might finally have solved the problem with SmD elbows literally falling apart. The dolls are (were?) alright -- pros and cons like any other brand. Everything around them is absolutely bonkers, from the die-hard fans to Danny himself. There's a thread on the doll dreaming forums about Danny that's over 100 pages long, man is a real piece of work.

sandblasting the molds I can understand, fit & finish is important for premium products
but click joints? why? why limit movement to increments of 10°?
and greasing plastic joints? moreover, using grease for joints on a soft vinyl doll, where seepage might ruin the vinyl (decay, not just staining)?

>> No.43161506

>>43161421
I've disassembled Smart Dolls before and having done so, I have no idea what he's talking about. There doesn't seem to be lubrication or anything in the joints that I've found, it's all snaps and a few pieces of hardware. Putting all the R&D into the frame like he did without actually improving the articulation is such a baffling move to me personally -- cutting down on post-processing and so on, sure, makes sense, but... the best thing I can guess for the new joints is because he's marketing to children now, and maybe more limited jointing is... easier for them to play with or something? Hell if I know. Man is off his rocker.

I want a doll or two as an escapism.
I have a very solid grasp on reality; just fucking tired of everyone's bullshit, and I need someone or even something to interact with that won't nag me.

I really like scale model-building and have a variety of craft-related hobbies.
Will a doll help?

I'm also poor as fuck, but I own a 3D printer.
As it stands, I have precisely $100 in my pocket to throw at a doll / make a doll from.
I am a machinist by trade that's out of work and have a variety of tools at my disposal - die grinders, sanders, and dremels, aside from the aforementioned 3D printer.
I found a BJD model I like, should I try printing one, or is it a joke to even try and waste filament?
Have pity upon a wretched man in less than ideal circumstances, and give me advice.

>> No.43162568

There are parts like busts that are 3D printed so it's certainly a possibility. I don't know where would you get all the blueprints though.

>> No.43162595

>>43162568
I have a full 3D model fren, but it'll be about ~50 hours in print time, and about 3/4 a kilo of filament.
But not sure if it's worth buying a full filament roll for $50 in the right skin tone, or to find a cheap doll, or to just die.

>> No.43162611

>>43162470
I've seen a few attempts to 3d print one over the years.

>> No.43162614

>>43162568
Also, while I like modeling, I don't know if it'd be the same making a doll from scratch.
I can't ever bond with my creations, it's kind of fucking sad, to be quite honest with you.

I'll make something, but I don't end up feeling attached to it.
Maybe I do, I don't know.

>> No.43162636

No worries, I appreciate the honesty, anon.
I'm actually a rather experienced tailor, and I know my way around a machine.
Never sewed a miniature outfit, but I've done the full-size thing, so, it'd just be learning to make it, but smaller-scale.

Plus, buying clothes will be a lot easier to do in parts.
I just kind of want to have an anthropomorphic object to "hang out" with.

Wouldn't have to spend so much all at once for clothes - I'd feel more comfortable spending $100 a month than $600 at once.
Again, I'm a complete poorfag.
