I'm going to analyze Shirou's character before and after the grail war.

Emiya Shirou. His name already says everything about him. The only thing he had when Kiritsugu found him was his name. Shirou, white. White like a sheet of paper. The only other thing is Emiya, his ideal which is like a straight black line on a white piece of paper. He only lives for his ideal. I've drawn a black line on a white background for everyone who can't picture it in his mind.

Then, he meets some important people that color his whiteness. Taiga, the orange ball he can always have fun with. Saber, the strong, golden sword that is however nearly broken. Rin, the black/red trusty shield that will always back him. Archer, the red wall he has to surpass to reach his ideal. Sakura, the blue line that represents another path that deviates from his ideal for various reasons. More to come, stay tuned.

When analyzing Japanese names, you must look at the meaning of the kanji, not the spelling.
衛宮 (Emiya)
士郎 (Shirou)

衛 - protect, defend, guard, safeguard
宮 - shrine, Imperial palace, honorific title of royalty
士 - learned man, magnificent man, Samurai
郎 - man, servant
