i find this looking through even straight up rock bands. i can describe all the different feelings and styles that ooze from bands like ac/dc, linkin park, slipknot, sum41, green day, whoever you like; theres a clear and distinct style.
maybe not a fair comparison to mega hits, but a lot of the even "popular" rock bands i listen to from japan with recommendations sounds very pop-like or otherwise just flat noise with no captivating emotion.
take screamo for example. its used to effect in bands like linkin park, atreyu, etc. a lot of japanese bands seem to just randomly have screaming that technically, vocally sounds competent but just doesnt resonate or seem to carry much meaning other than for superficiality of "this is a rock/metal song so we need this." which coincides with the stereotype that jp musicians, fashion, culture, etc can be very superficial. like jap rap/hip-hop wearing ghetto clothes and rapping abotu drugs, guns, hood etc when clearly they never experienced any of that and comes off as poser-ish.
i love japan culture to death, but if i had one word to point out its biggest flaw its that---poser-ish.
