Night-Sparrow Youkai can take Sparrow form whenever they want, so I wouldn't be surprised if a newborn Night Sparrow looked somewhat like an ordinary bird. At some stage in growth they would gain the ability to change their shape and anthropomorphise I'm thinking.

Eggs don't grow or shrink because they have nothing to use to expand. All of their substance, save for the inedible shell, is used as food for the yet-unborn young.
