Could I get some help? I'm trying to make a square chart of Touhou characters that relate to each other
Ideally, every character should have a friend at every side, but it's a bit hard to pull off

I don't see a problem with putting Flan next to Sakuya, the only other person really is Okina but that's less of a friendship and more of a "Hey do this for me"ship
Hard to give advice when you don't specify which exact characters you're doing or where you are selling these so I can buy

But anyway, >>42869191. I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but I'll at least try to pair up the lone boxes. Daiyousei and Cirno work the best together. Yuugi and Suika make more sense canonically imo, but if you're into Yuugi x Parsee, you do you. Lily White should go near the other fairies, perhaps even with Cirno and Daiyousei too. Hijiri and Miko are tough to pair up since it doesn't seem like you have any other Buddhists or Taoists, respectively. For the other lonely, reclusive ones, you have Yuuma and Doremy, who both seem like they're kind of ladies of their own domain (with the respect to the 2hus you have in the chart, at least).

I'm terrible explaining myself and on top of that english isn't my first language, sorry

So, what I got here are some drawings I'm making to sell as notebooks on anime conventions
At first I wanted to make the Komeiji sisters and make like a little reference to each other (The colors are a negative version of each other, they share the same frame design and you can see their silhouette behind one another)
Then I did Kokoro and thought "Well since Kokoro is Koishi's rival, I may just make another connection between them" and I drew Koishi's third eye tentacle thingy wrapping around her frame

I wanted to do the same with Sakuya and Youmu since MinusT is making a fight between them in a few months
And that got me thinking again "Well what if I try to connect every single one of these together?"

But it's kind of hard. For example, Satori doesn't have many friends or relations aside from her sister and her pets, so I ran into a dead end.

Sakuya and Youmu fit perfectly to the sides, I can just add Remi or Flandre next to Sakuya and Yuyuko next to Youmu
But what about the top and bottom?

I want to lay down all of these on a table and be able to construct a big picture

I have some planned, but if I'm doing this chart thing, I may have to add some characters in between the ones I already wanted to make
For example, I wanted to draw Sumireko and Reisen
So to connect both of them I should draw Mokou and Kaguya

Maybe I should drop the idea of connecting these vertically, it adds an extra layer of troubles
I could just do it side to side

For now I'm just selling these regionally, but after I settle down with everything and make myself a big stock I plan on shipping them internationally, nobody wants to buy these here

Why are there so many Latin American Touhou fans? Probably the biggest western fanbase (outside of maybe Finland). My (autistic) speculation is that something about Touhou attracts the Catholic soul. I'm a Catholic American and something about the Touhous reminds me too much of patron saints for my own good

My personal path to Touhou was on the early days of YouTube, watching weird japanese MAD videos
I found "Ronald Roll'd" and discovered Touhou

At the time, hard games like "I wanna be the guy" were popular, and I liked the challenge that Touhou presented so I stayed

Right now my only worry is that I can match characters horizontally but things get harder when I add the top layer

How can I relate characters in all 4 directions if some characters just don't have that many relations?

Example: Marisa goes nicely alongside Reimu, we have plenty of options to place next to her (Alice, Nitori, Patchy) But on top of Reimu or below her I should place someone that relates to Reimu, but at the same time, that relates to Marisa's friends

So I'm not sure if I should add this layer on top of every character, as I said, Satori doesn't have many relatives and it's just a dead end once you place her pets


I'm planning on adding Flandre next to Sakuya, so then I can place Remi next to Flandre and finally Patchy next to Remi (Or I could just Swap the sisters between them, I think it doesn't interfere that much)

On top of Patchy I could add Marisa, but that leaves me with Reimu on top of Remi

I'm planning on adding Rumia at some point! It's the first Windows boss, then Cirno.
Cirno is great for connecting lots of characters together, the three fairies of light, Lily White, Eternity. The three fairies know Nitori and so on

Since you're putting this on a table I'd assume you have a height/width limit and want it to be roughly a rectangle once it's all done. Do you know how many characters you want to have at the end? I feel like the first thing to do is make a list of each character's relations (maybe also have how strongly related they are).

This feels very close to a graph theory problem, where the pictures are nodes and have edges if they're adjacent, and you try to maximize the number of nodes that have as close to 4 edges as possible. There's more to it, but I'd need to mull it over a bit more to be able to give a good answer.

For example, Iku and Raiko are associated with lightnings

If you are going to connect them vertically too, then maybe you can place remilia between patchy and sakuya, and flandre either above or below remilia. And then place someone above/below flandre, like yuuma, who she fought in touhou 17.5

I might try using a bunch of character tiles myself to guess at what would be a sensible layout

Here, anon. I'm quite the lore hound so this is rooooughly what I think your best bet grid would look like (only includes named characters, no pc98 characters included)

I put Unzan and Ichirin on the same tile, and also put Okina+Satono+Mai on the same tile, all for space

Of course there are sides where characters aren't actually related in any particular way (like Shinmyoumaru with rabbits or Rinnosuke next to Hecatia) but it's a "best case" sort of idea with known character connections basically. Here's the best I could manage. I decided to be loose with "relate to each other" since you had Youmu and Sakuya next to each other and done already, had to add characters that weren't on your list, and struggles hard to make the right end as bearable as it is, but hopefully it'll be good inspiration for a better one if nothing else. Good luck with your project OP, I hope it turns out well.
