Canonically, Kurmi is enough to scare away anyone stupid enough to try and get to mugenkan, so Elly hasn't fought in god knows how long. Also, it would make sense for the stage 3 theme. What about Kurumi, you ask? Oh well, she's busy, or so claims Elly... She sure took a while to answer that. How does she even know about Kurumi's whereabouts? You shake these thoughts off and just assume that given how few people there are roaming these surroundings, it's safe to believe that the few that are there know each other pretty well.
What a generous soul that Elly is! you wonder when will you be able to make your way back home, but for now, I guess living with this strangely affectionate grim reaper looking woman isn't so bad...

My headcanon is that Elly is not really a grim reaper and that her scythe is really just a farming/gardening tool for Yuuka's garden at Mugenkan (she's both Yuuka's gatekeeper and gardener). I also like to think that Elly acts as a motherly figure for Kurumi and trying to teach her how to act properly because she can a be a bit childish at times! Anyway, I love Elly's protective personality, thank you Kurumi for guiding me to her! and thank you anon for writing this!

I don't think that sounds too much like the Elly I imagine, but everyone is entitled to write their characters how they like!
She looks very huggeable and warm in that art anyway.
Also, the Elly thread is resting at page one for longer than ever! Goes to show that older characters still get shown love, even though they are (Probably) never going to be in a canon work ever again.

On a side note, if we are to reconcile PC98 and windows together somehow, how do we expain where Yuuka lives, and therefore Mugenkan's existence?
I liked the fanwork where Mugenkan was connected to the Garden of the Sun via a portal, but I also like to think that gensokyo is surrounded by wild lands that get strange when you get further from the H.V. , and a lake of blood with a mansion (In, on, around?) it is nothing too strange for the border lands.
Something to think about, I'd appreciate a writefag or someone to discuss it with me if they so wanted to.

As retarded as it is trying to talk about people's headcanons, here I go, if only to keep up the conversation.
At what point would the Extra stage of LLS happen? It is kinda meta in that the characters fully admit there is zero reason for them to be there, and I don't see the LLS battle destroying an entire dream world, at least beyond the point Yuuka could just fix it using magic or something.

I'd like to think that Mugenkan is so far into the mountains that there is no reason to ever bump into it, and getting there in and of itself is such a pain in the ass that Kurumi is enough to scare anyone stupid (9) enough to try.
Elly probably would get along with Meiling quite well, although Meiling actually IS the first line of defense against the SDM, while Elly is protected by Kurumi.
The only reason R/M ever go there in LLS is because Yuuka is doing a little trolling on them, and that they're willing to push past the two in order to get in, something that a powerful youkai that actually could get past both Kurumi and Elly would not do, because they'd also know that if they *did* get in, they'd have to deal with a pissed off Yuuka, something that is not a fun experience.
And because of that, both of the two are stuck there, especially Elly, because the distance between Mugenkan and anywhere you could *do* anything is so far that she cannot ever get there.
As for Kurumi, she's a vampire who lives on a lake of blood. If you lived next to a literal ocean of food, you'd probably not find much reason to ever leave aynyway.

TL/DR
They exist, but have no real reason to leave because everything else is so far away.
Yuuka can come and go quickly because she's Yuuka, and can turn into a ball of light and teleport n' shit because she's Yuuka.

I never said the LLS battle destroyed the dream world, only Mugenkan. by LLS battle i mean the battle between Yuuka and Reimu/Marisa, only Mugenkan which i presume happened inside Mugenkan.

I don't like interpretations where Mugenkan is still intact because then you'd have to explain why Yuuka would leave her comfy grand mansion for some god knows where garden, "Yuuka can come and go quickly" isn't really a satisfactory explanation for me, also it would imply Yuuka got some gappy powers that rivals Yukari.

Yeah, kinda. This is Yuuka we are talking about here though, and as far as I can see it, Yukari is damn near omnipotent, but some people are not too far off. Yuuka is definately one of those people. Cloning yourself is a pretty impressive thing to do, something only Flandre does better, and Flandre is a fucking impossible person to fight seriously.
My headcanon is that Yuuka has never fought in a serious fight before, and just... lets people go when she either gets bored or makes her point well enough. This is in line with PoFV, at least for the major routes, and would explain why she values sleeping over annoying Reimu a bit when it suddenly becomes inconvenient for her.
Also Yuuka being autistically (To some extent, anyway) obsessed with flowers isn't too big a leap i don't think, so her managing a garden in gensokyo, where she can observe things now and again would be pretty in character, explaining why she's a bg character in HM, as she has lived long enough to not care about whatever goofy shit them yung'ns are up to, while still watching them beat each other up over something ultimately inconsequential (From her point of view, anyway)
Yuuka's main kinda "deal" is absurd power, but not a whole lot of control/variety. Flowers are kinda the punchline of LLS's ending, but are in line with her having a pure brute force method of fighting, with bullshit patterns and coming back after being defeated so she can put her clothes on. I seem to recall she can turn into a ball of light or some shit, that moves a *hell* of a lot faster than her normal leisurely pacing.
I also like the idea that the GOTS allows her to warp space around a fuckload, as all those flowers could really boost her power from "Ridiculous and broken" to "What the fuck?"
