But after a while, usually by the third stage, I start getting bored and thinking about stupid pointless shit. I start talking to myself, and if it snowballs further, I start having full blown out arguments with myself. The longer this goes on, the greater my chances of slipping up and getting killed over something stupid.

Then I get so pissy over that first lost life (because I still had bombs) that my whole game gets shot to hell and I wind up losing all the rest of them within the minute.

I think I understand what UFO's trying to show: 8 lives is clearly too much. You need to clear stages using only 6 lives and a fuckton of bombs, half of which have to be used to GET MORE BOMBS.

Of course, there's that little matter of clearing more spellcards rather than bomb/die on those, but I could never count on myself on those; my performances are too inconsistent.
