At the end of the day, Touhou is designed specifically for the hardcore danmaku playerbase that set the worldwide high scores, and only from there does it branch out into the "casual" shit like music, videos, doujin, and so forth.

There is no way that Touhou can become some trend the way Twilight has, because the fundamental core of it (the games) discourages "trendwhores", and do you really think ZUN is going to support the whoring out of his creative baby? He already doesn't like people like /jp/ playing his games, there's no way in hell he's not going to do everything in his power to nip a "Twilightization" of Touhou in the bud.

Again, it's rage-worthy that anything Touhou related could show up on American television, but it's not the death of the fandom by any means.

Lots of things he can do. One is say "fuck off gaijins stay off our touhou". It's hard to make something mainstream when the creator of said product actually pushes against it.

Secondly, the easiest avenue to this would be to make an official anime, which we already know ZUN is 100% against.

Don't expect him to release licensed translated versions of the games either, which means small independent translators will remain the gatekeepers to the Touhou fandom. Obviously the games are playable without actually knowing the dialogue, but for the average American consumer, that is actually a huge barrier, especially considering their difficulty curve.

And the existing fandom is so weeaboo that it will be close to impossible to translate it into some 4kids style family-friendly version. The stuff that American companies bring over for consumption is already geared towards that age group, it's really only a matter of bullshit localization and random censoring for American sensibilities. Cannot be done with Touhou.

So, the fandom will be fine; if you're not a weeaboo to begin with you're not getting into Touhou.

wait, really who care about all this shit? The only way the fanbase could get any worse is if we saw a Touhou anime being released in the west for something like Cartoon Network. Then we'd probably go down the Sonic route and it would be terrible.

Fortunately, I doubt we'll ever reach that point. Maybe when ZUN is finally tired of the series and just sells it to the highest bidder to retire in comfort. Then it would have to go through the process of actually getting licensed in the west and brought over. As popular as Touhou is over here, it's still a long way from being mainstream and it'll never reach mainstream in the west until a lot more things happen.
