I'm on the Yamato 56 route, and Suzaku is doing his whole First Star thing, but Kentaru isn't a Demon, so I can't send him (and incidentally, Ran is still alive, so obviously, Soun isn't an option either)

For me, it was that moment on my first playthrough, when the Demon army appears and rapes everyone who i didn't take over (which, in that playthrough, was alot. Mori, Takeda, Takuga, the Miko...It was cruel to watch.

It's somewhat less simple than that. You want to get the most nations possible while minimizing gourd "intake" so you don't prematurely trigger the temple incident. Which is very, very hard, because it happens after five, and right away you get two for being nobunaga's faction and fish guy to the north. Even if you do everything you can to avoid it, eventually asai-asakura will declare war on you, and beating them means going up against uesugi immediately afterward, and that requires your full attention.

And getting into war with uesugi means houjou gets gobbled up.

But how the hell am I supposed to grind up Takeda before asakura declares war on me? I tried just going right after them as soon as I thought I was able, but it turns into a deadlock.

So the plan is to snatch up the surrounding territories excepting Mouri, Takeda, and Azai-Asakura, then to pummel Takeda as quickly as possible, then Uesugi, Mouri, and Houjou.

That's a tall fucking order, though.

Alternatively, you can have a two front war against the Uesugi and Hojou, to avoid one of them being taken over.

With Kenshin auto-losing to Rance, that's arguably the easier route.

on a second game, you can capture Uesugi without losing Hojo.

So, you end up delaying the war against Asakura and leaving them be (After already taking over Tenshi Sect, Chousin, Hara, the Mikos, and Tenegeshima By sometime in the turn 20s, which isn't as hard as it sounds, Optionally after taking out Tokugawa and the Hannys by the time the Texas War starts) so that you don't fight Uesugi, then you go to War with Mouri, which can take some time.

In the course of Fighting Mouri, you capture Takuga, and then Finish Mouri (which is the hardest part) and then move onto Hojo. After capping Hojo, you finish the War with the Asakuras, then fight Uesugi.

This breaks the 5th Gourd, so you now have 10 rounds to Bullrush Takeda so they don't get OP, and kill off Iga.. Then the Demon Army appears.

Easy.
