This thread is for anything related to the discussion of Japanese light novels, WN / Web Novels included.
Learning Japanese to avoid mistakes and subtext trimming by translators and MTL is heavily recommended.

Dendro already got a mediocre anime, the story isn't as fun without all the narration/exposition/monologues from pure text.

Dendro should really get a VN, I've always thought the info dumps/battles would perfectly fit in with a VN like fate s/n or dies irae.

I'd love a VN filled with what if scenarios with Ray's relationships/abilities or a collection of side stories, or even an original story taking place in the world.

I gave it a try after some anon recommended it here, and it is just a revamped version of B.A.D. Except for this time, the main heroine is a cute NEET instead of a smug loli and the MC doesn't have a hateboner for her.

I'd recommend some of the fate spin off light novels if you're looking for urban fantasy.

Fate strange/fake or the lord el melloi 2 case files are pretty great reads that expands upon the nasuverse.

I'd also recommend Rakuin no Monshou, it's a great fantasy story with a lot of thriller elements since the MC is the body double of a prince that died, and he has to juggle that deception while working towards his own goals of revenge against a general.

It's a fantastic read, even if the ending felt like the story got axed, and the romantic tension never truly got resolved.

Male/Neutral. Just think about it, if you were to think of it as a female, it would mean that "she" was unloved/got thrown away by her father, used by the CoCk until she's broken, then got passed around by various (by the lack of better term) cursed niggers until she's BLACKED before she finally met her fated one, the one who would do his very best in purifying her. To be fair, Kaido used to treat/liken Dendro as a VN, at least until the Quartierlatin Arc. Hell, he used to say that Fran is like that one antagonist-turned waifu from some series, though unfortunately we're on the Nemesis/Juliet end. So unless we're getting a soft reboot with different heroine like Vanadis, the most we can get is an omnibus ending like Ben-To.
>Side stories
If you're reading the WN version, there's Another Episode where Kaidou posts some bonus SS, usually one heavily related to King of Kings/CoCk material.

Does anyone know how to convert novels on syosetu into htmlz or epub so they can be read in an ebook reader?

Specifically, I want to use ttu ebook reader so I can use yomichan to do lookups and make Anki cards as well as set my text and background colors. Vertical orientation is also key; I don't like reading novels left to right.
https://github.com/ttu-ttu/ebook-reader

I tried using convertio to convert a pdf downloaded from syosetu as well as an html file that I made by copy and pasting text, and neither worked.

Nevermind, I'm an idiot. No need to remove the rp and rt elements. They just look weird in the test block there, but they are proper furigana when converted to epub.

All is well. Now I just need to double check some elements to remove because it added some junk and junk images to the bottom of the epub.

The second book relied on too many plot pushers copied from the first book. Air battles, trick magister elections, ebisugawas plotting to put yasabro in a stew, going into hiding... It spent so little time on actually developing the tengu showdown that the third book would paradoxially have to feel uncharacteristically rushed and focused to resolve that plot line. As for its quality, it's faithful to the novel and fans are generally satisfied with it, though the opinion might've been skewed by the shittiness of the anime. The comments on the Nico chapters are full of people shitting on the anime and saying that THIS is how a Dendro adaptation should be done. it's hard to top the LN art, which i wouldn't call realistic, but it's more like a heightened version of reality while being anime-ish, which honestly matches the story itself pretty well, it's about exactly what i imagine the canonical anime graphic settings to be
the manga art isn't that, instead it's just the mangaka's personal style, which isn't bad by any means but it doesn't really F E E L like canon dendro, this is what i imagine causes people to dislike it

This one in particular is extremely edgy and the LN art doesn't really show that, while the more chaotic manga art does in spades.
Mind you don't mistake this for me shilling it, it's actually pretty bad in my opinion, it doesn't do much with it's edgyness aside from a decent ego trip showing how sociopathic the MC is, but not much else, I just like the manga art.

funny you mention that, i was about to rant about virgin road
a LN that won a contest then has done basically nothing for it's entire runtime, it's not like volume 1 was that airtight either, and both it's afterwords and other author comments from various sources show he's basically making shit up as it goes along and barely cobbling it together
from what looks like, prizewinners have a lot of effort for the first volume, likely with months if not years of ideas brewed up just to make it work, then they win the prize, get serialized, then get fucked by deadlines and having to keep the story going within less than 3-6 months per volume depending on the publisher
meanwhile WN stuff from narou or yomu are from people already writing in a serialized manner, and contrary to popular belief, the narou/yomu rankings are surprisingly competitive

Any rabukome fags reading this? I'm on vol 6 and loving it so far, but I'm concerned about the anime adaptation they're making.

Thanks for the reminder to read the dendro wn. I also piled up a year's worth waiting for the whole arc to be finished and just binged it this weekend. I thought infinite jobs were the old gods, but I guess that's not the case, can't wait to see if there's going to be some third system separate from jobs/embyros that's related to these old gods.

Dendro really is great, Kaidou's plot arcs always hit itch I have for ability battles + interesting world + some main theme that revolves around the key character's abilities.

I honestly wish at this point for Kaidou to make a setting book like Nasu did for Fate. And dendrogram needs a fucking anime adaptation that covers the non-Ray multi-character arcs and make it like the Baccano/Durarara adaptation.

>I honestly wish at this point for Kaidou to make a setting book like Nasu did for Fate.
He did put out some parts describing the Masters/Embryos/tians/monsters/status effects right after he was done with Franklin's Game, which in his mind concluded the first major arc of the story.
Apparently we're still just on the second one, which will be over when the war ends. Maybe he'll put out an updated version of those parts after that? I imagine it'll be a real doozy though.
Well, even if we don't get anything like that, at least the unofficial Dendro JP wiki is, unsurprisingly, run by autists who don't miss any details.
>And dendrogram needs a fucking anime adaptation that covers the non-Ray multi-character arcs and make it like the Baccano/Durarara adaptation.
Personally, I hope that as the years go by, AI art stops being a mess and reaches its logical conclusion: high-quality anime generation.
Sure, it would shake up the industry like nothing else, but even partial automation of anime creation would greatly reduce costs and enable smaller publishers like HJ to secure better and longer adaptations.
With Dendro being so fucking huge, that is basically the only way I can see good shit like the latest arc getting an anime.

The anime and manga industries are a joke at this point after a complete downward spiral for an entire decade, I'm surprised anyone still can get hyped for or want adaptations at all..
I'm not even going to say "isekai bad" with this, given weirdly 50% of my top 10 favorites of all time are isekai, but that's only when talking about the source material, the LN.
For the LNs I have read that have adaptations, 9 out of 10 are terrible, I'm not asking for glorious sakuga and artwork/paneling literally every second or page of it (though it would be nice) but when things like the dendro anime that make you wonder how it exists from how few fucks were given when making it, I can't help but end up thinking AI animated scenes would end up saving the anime industry when stuff like this image exists and it's commonplace by now, any meme complaints about the hands and other few details I can't imagine being harder to fix compared to animating it entirely from scratch.

>Even the manga is rushed as fuck lately, vol 1 of the LN was adapted in 14 manga chapers but vol 2 was adapted in only 6 chapters. The manga even skipped the visit to Shinomiya's dojo.
That's.. concerning. I stopped reading the manga because the translations were godawful, but it's sad to hear they'd skip relationship/bond development in a story like this.

>And then there isn't a good point to end the season, some Nips raise concern about this too. Hope they don't make an anime-original ending.
I thought the same since the story is such a slow burn. Usually, you'd end an anime season after significant story progress has been made but is there even such a point yet? The middle-schooler visit in Volume 3 has an excellent vibe to it, but there's barely been any development at that point. It's basically the turning point, in a way.

A good stopping point is probably at the end of their 1st year of study, as I'm sure the author is planning some very spicy things for the 2nd year so it'd make a good teaser for the future, but the source material isn't even there yet AFAIK, and even then it'd be too much for a single cour without severely rushing things.

That being said, I'll get properly pissed if they make an anime-original ending. It'd just be a different series at that point.

>Also volume 8 when?
Up until now, a new volume was released roughly every five months, and the last volume came out in August, so it should be during this month. Although, I've seen somewhere that the LN is about to catch up with the WN, so it may take longer going forward.

No, that's your problem. You think that autism means "professional, precise labor", when it's actually a personality disorder with a wide range of symptoms.

But you know, saying that every time would be a bit too ridiculous.
And because I know the discussion is heading there, feel free to give me a better word for that, because it's not "grindmonke" either even if most turbo autists end up as grindmonkes, because that word is closer to "person that continues polishing what they can do to it's utmost limits and then beyond, usually to kill monsters or people more effectively, but not necessarily so".

But if you look at meikyuu, there is something about the mind of Michio that people just want to communicate. And autism is one of the easiest words to reach for. And one that, if you don't insist on taking it by its meme definition, is actually descriptive.
What you are doing is akin to insisting that edgy should be used exclusively for overly bloodthirsty fiction.

i mean, he kinda is, from the very start half the plots happen because he was trying to grind and something comes up
he isn't a lunatic like figaro or other superiors, but hardly slacks off on grinding either + his level goes up much faster than average (unless you compare him to rook), it's just skipped off-screen because unless it's a big UBM it's kinda boring to read
lower end grindmonke maybe, but really he would still rather grind than tour around for too long

Ray doesn't really grind though, he just helps tians while doing a bunch of quests offscreen and also trains pvp in the arenas.

Ray is also 100% insane, just during battles we see it where he treats his own body as a sacrifice to accomplish the tiniest of possibilities. I think Ray's insanity comes from the fact he doesn't care about his own safety and values avoiding bad ends for the people around him rather than himself.

I'm pretty certain whatever superior job Ray ends up getting will probably be related to his constant sacrifice of his body, then Nemesis will probably evolve to be the stopper for Ray's disregard for his own life and that'll somehow lead to some sort of romantic scene that I hope Kaidou doesn't fuck up on writing.

>>42404461
Nominally he goes to "grind" once in a blue moon when it serves the plot for him to run into something while doing so (like Figaro or the jailbreakers) but none of that grinding ever contributes meaningfully to his powerlevel except when it's an excuse for him to take a new job offscreen like Death Trooper.

What killed the isekai general was primarily generic big board degradation from too much normalfag exposure.
The killing blow was the kagejitsu thread shitshows happening over the powder kegs laid out by the arifureta and otome mob adaptations.
And before anyone asks for a QRD because frankly it's not that interesting, it's just pic related but with kagejitsu instead of tales of hearts R, loner isekai instead of drakengard 3 and zero believers instead of vesperia.
Yes, it's practically a 1:1 situation, spoilers and fake spoilers included, with the kagejitsu shitshow being slightly nuanced but not really.

I'm surprised this general isn't a cataclysmic dumpster fire.
From what I have noticed (though not in an equal split) we have the following:
>BTfags reawakening from cryosleep, who are all too eager to shit on translations and EOPs.
>Newf/a/gs bullied by ironic weebs and normalfags and itching to prove what they like is "good".
>Those very same normalfags and ironic weebs praising entry level stuff as the best thing ever, one of the good ones in a bad medium, or good akshually because deconstrsuversiparody.
>Isek/a/i refugees itching for a fight like rabid dogs distrustful of everyone because those threads are a shithole by now and they are used to acting like that.
>A random assortment of /a/ LN threads posters, which come in 2 flavors, one is "[LN that ended up my first beloved] is the best thing ever, and what you like is shit and generic".
>And the other is "[genre i don't like] bad, LNs better, thus [genre i don't like] LNs bad".
>/jp/ posters jaded at everyone and everything that won't hesitate to remind you what you like is SHIT.
This venn diagram is a minefield that is more mines than soil and I'm surprised the worst that happens is the occasional spergouts that aren't even that big of a deal, half of those spergouts don't even take a single thread to bump limit.

What killed it for me was people actively killing discussions because they identified posters as undesirables (and usually by the topic), which was fed into by a second group of people who intentionally triggered the first group for fun.
At some point, all that was left for standard "discussion" was NTR.

Of course, it did not help that for a long time, there were few series that the general read as a group that could have brought everybody together.
But the true problem was no specific title (or lack thereof), but that many anons have got it in their heads that there are undesirables among us whom they can recognize by some bizarre tells.
The most notorious example being the guy who started arguments whenever anybody used "we" in any context. Unless we get that idea out of people's heads, the same thing will happen again.

I touched on this when someone sperged out about TRPG posters a couple of threads ago, but just because I say I like something because I think it does something better than most others, doesn't mean that I think everything else that's not that thing is shit or that I think that thing is uncriticizeable.
I like Rokujouma for how comfy it is, but that doesn't mean nothing else is comfy; I like TRPG for how immersive it is but I think it's also too slow, I like Dendro for autism but there's plenty more autism out there and it gets extremely contrived, I like Otherside Picnic for the /x/ yuri but I'm not actually sold on Sorawo's attraction to Toriko beyond the physical, I like Danmachi because at its peak it can feel like a true heroic epic but it's hardly the only novel to do that, I like Hell Mode because watching numbers go up is actually comfy but I think it's extremely basically written, I like Bookworm for how engaging it makes even mundane shit and the slow build in scale but basic plot points like "nobody knows how to memorise 150 pokemon names" are extremely questionable, and so on.
The very idea that shitting on other stuff is somehow inherent to praising something is a /v/ consolewar import.

>Making Nemesis able to read Ray's mind literally killed their romance.
With how often she's surprised by what he does and says and how long it's taking her to figure him out, it feels like Nemesis is blocked out of Ray's mind more than half of the time, and that's not including the times Gardranda or the axe purposely exclude her. It seems more like limited telepathy at this point rather than mind-reading.

And honestly, I'd say that the problem with RayxNemesis—hell, RayxANYONE—is Ray himself. He's basically a shonen protag who never showed even the slightest bit of romantic interest in anyone. His childhood trauma is both a funny and a reasonable explanation for why he's like this, but because of that, I can't imagine him ever catching feelings. It's almost as outlandish as that happening to Luffy or something.
Kaido has surprised me many times before, but I seriously doubt his ability to make romance involving Ray satisfying even if he somehow dropped the plot's demands and did an easier pairing than the Nightmare-difficulty RayxNemesis (the uncultured FEAR RayxJubei).

I believe in Nemesis. Kaidou clearly loves the idea of character growth and the journey they go through to reflect within the powers they obtain.

I'm pretty certain that Nemesis's desire to become more than just Ray's pikachu/agumon/pal and become a full on lover could be a trigger for some sort of evolution, probably not to the infinite level, but maybe related to whatever system that Maiden embyros are most close to or something.

The romance could be kino as well, the ordinary man who was forced to get an extraordinary mindset by living near a literal godly sister, eventually getting healed by the extraordinary embyro Nemesis who holds the ordinary desire of wanting her loved one to be safe and happy.

Imagine something like Fate S/N heaven's feel where Shirou's body literally breaks down because he has to break his own ideal. I want Ray to also hit a point where he's forced to have to abandon his own desire to aim for the tiniest possibility because he needs to sacrifice other people, not just his own body/life and this could be the point Nemesis needs to be sacrificed or something.

tl;dr Ray x Nemesis is giving off insane kino vibes to me in terms of narrative and abilities. Kaidou just needs to actually build up romantic scenes instead of Nemesis just being a hungry Pikachu.

I agree with the other anon, Nemesis having themes of both retribution + the opposite like forgiveness/sympathy could be perfect to represent the pain she feels from Ray's suffering and her desire to protect Ray from it.

I can imagine it could be something like allowing Nemesis herself to take damage instead of Ray to build up the damage counter, or something way more dramatically strong like N times the damage Nemesis takes gets accumulated to the damage counter since I'd assume this could pop up during her later evolutions.

Have you read the entirety of Vol 17 and Crow Record? IIRC, Ray was supposed to be Juliet's tutor in the original script (around 2017-ish), which is why she got quite a lot of exposure during the 9/11 bunny arc, Ray frequently mentioning how easy it was to talk to her, and why Ray at times mentioned about getting part time job once skool starts. Not that it matters to me since I'm firmly in Fran's camp desu.

It's less about overlapping fans and more about Kaidou being too much of a ShaFro shill. If you go to Narou's author page, Kaidou frequently posts about ShaFro news like it's nobody's business. Hell, I learned about both the anime and game adaptation from Dendro instead of ShaFro's WN/manga. I'm around ~75% sure they're related somehow.
>>42403307
>Shangrila does actually get good or not
Can't say I like it to be honest. The story drives down deeply that the game really is just a game, nothing more and nothing less, so the plot seems a bit shallow for those with a self-centered completionist (kill all, take all, do all routes) mindset like me when they pull the "muh AI lives matters!" card.
The story itself also feels like it was supposed to be the sequel of an already finished series, especially since Sunraku tends to compare every kusoge he played with ShaFro to capitalize how "real" the game feels like.
Each character's leitmotif however, is solid. Precisely due to the second problem I wrote about, each characters felt like they've been fully developed when they're first introduced, which means that there's barely any of those wishy-washy "is it okay to do this?"-element in the story. You know, I've been trying to work on a military series recently and I'm starting to take back some complaints about how long it took to translate the old gate series, and why no one even bothered with its spin off.

The biggest time waste recent was trying to translate drill commands because while the kanji where easy to understand, finding the right commands to use was a massive pain in the ass

aren't military commands and literal legalese among the top 3 most difficult things to translate? not just in japanese, in any language

legalese isn't difficult, it just needs specialized vocab which is brain-dead once you know it since it stays extremely well defined for (obviously) legal purposes.

Apocalypse now, fantasy ww2 edition with a female MC (reincarnated guy who was really good at fos games) whose advantages don't mean shit in the face of trench warfare.

It's a great read if you enjoyed other war stories that don't try to cover the ugliness of how worthless lives become, the loss of humanity, the relationships comrades still make, and the hope that remains even in the middle of hell.

maybe or I'm just worse at japanese then I thought, thankfully its not a complete nightmare since the series has some explanation notes else I would of spend days trying to figure out some words, but then I get words like 号令調整 which I know what it means in japanese, but have been splitting hairs trying to find if there's an equivalent command in any english speaking military
Other annoyances with military series is giving people titles that aren't actual positions. Putting 学生 at the end of someone's name like its a honorifics drove me up the wall for a bit and I ended up copping out and localized it as cadet and 対番 I flat out gave up since I could find jack as an equivalent, had a different meaning that what most people on /jp/ are used to (i.e not music related), and the literal translation was clunky as fuck in almost every sentence

Man I love to beat a dead horse, but I really want to say you're putting more effort into this than half the english localization companies combined.
I don't even need english translations anymore, but I still appreciate this level of effort for those that still do.

There are no carbonated drinks in that universe.
The protagonist speculates that they were phased out because of incompatibility with space travel.
When they visit the elven planet, the MC goes into negotiations with some of the nobility residing over it to get them into carbonated cola research.

I remember he got some from his vacation pretty early in the story.

not coincidentally some of the better official translations I've read have been where the translator seems to genuinely like something outside of their role as a translator and will engage in discussions about it, follow/engage the author on twitter, or maybe they pushed to get it licensed in the first place etc

Just finished reading the succubus country arc in orc and I was thinking about philosophical matters such as the possibility of 90% of 4chan volunteering to be their food.

You’re essentially staying at a:
+
5 star hotel
exquisite food
have a mandatory work out in the yard
Your needs taken care of
No need to fear getting sucked dry as they make sure they have someone watching over so the succ doesn’t suck you to death
-
getting milked essentially 10 times a day as you need to help feed 10 of them
Not much to do other than fucking eating and sleeping
Can’t leave
Essentially livestock

Ha this is pretty much how it goes.
Bliss at first, a boring chore later on.
Still beats being loveless ugly penniless poorfag hobo on the streets though so some people still go for it which is why I thought a lot of people here who are plus depressed/suicidal would go for it too.
