like a year ago i was mining kotowaza and an anon asked when id learn japanese, and that made me think about what exactly it was i was doing.
im passing it on, learn japanese first, then worry about all the glyphs. learning the glyphs doesn't do that much, you can memorize all the readings and still be unable to understand anything
on the other hand if you have an idea of how japanese works, however vague, and recognize the words and phrases you can read much faster and easier even if you don't know some of the glyphs

just get an anki deck of them, there's only like 200. learning some rtk/wk key word will help you form mnemonics in your head to tell similar looking kanji apart. be warned a few radicals can look dramatically different than their standard appearance in some kanji, but you'll still be able to pick out the other radicals in any given kanji to search it up and figure out what the weird one is

think of it as the solid words in storage you just have for free + the fresher known words thst are still eating up RAM
consuming something with lots of those will move lots of them into storage making learning even more new words easier
so as soon as you reach the skill level where some content is 'easy for you (at least vocab wise) I recommend alternating, especially if there's stuff you want to consume, don't avoid it cause it'd too easy

never played the DS chrono trigger one but the DS/PS remakes of DQ IV-VI are massive improvements over the originals, my favorite part being the party banter button where you just constantly get tons of extra intraparty dialogue, most of which is really pleasing (to me)

I know there’s a used-stuff place called Second Street near my house which has bins and bins of loose SFC cartridges, and I don’t think any has a price sticker reading more than about 500円.

When I buy stuff like that — which isn’t often — I always look for the full, good-condition box+manual games, usually from the site 駿河屋. Don’t know if they ship internationally, though. Never had a bad experience from them. I got a bad console (Famicom) from them once, but hey gave me no hassle in returning it.

I tried to explain to my father how Japanese writing works, just so we could have a nice chat.

He proceeded to then say everything I was saying was wrong, that the nips spoke solely through kanji (according to him, a language that’s purely ideigramic, in other words, a chink language), and that hiragana and katakana were actually romanji, which was an attempt of the west to force it to turn it into a syllabic language.
And also, according to him there are kanji keyboards that have 10000 keys.

It was somewhat hilarious for me, so I thought I would share this little experience.

I know I saw たる a good number of time but each time I understood the gist of what the sentence meant so I never bothered to look up what it exactly meant until now but i'm scared I'm overlooking a lot of stuff doing that
didn't really knew what まとめる exactly meant until recently too when I saw it written in kanji and that's n3 baby grammar shit
generally everything that is written in kana I don't look up because I was thinking I'd pick up the meanings naturally but the fact that I still didn't fully acquire these two things make me wonder if it's a good idea
