They don't. Some coomer internet types use them interchangeably, but it's mostly outdated. Normal Japs recognize ノベルゲーム and in fact if you used エロゲーム they would get confused and assume you mean a nukige with no plot or some kind of nurse/maid sex simulator. There are even Japanese discord servers tagged with ノベルゲーム.

Finally finished Sharkness Life. Great VN overall and I really enjoyed it but I think the grand route felt a bit short and the villain went down shockingly easily for all the buildup.
Did they ever explain what happened to the original Remi (beyond that she was eaten by sharks), where MC's real parents were, what Kuuko's real name is, or why MC wakes up in the ocean at the start of every route? Those points were bugging me. Definitely the second best VN released in 2022 where the climax has the MC's catchphrase involve the word 'baby'.

For the overall Shinza series, Marie's route into KKK is the canon progression. Rea's route is a grand end to Dies Irae but the world itself has so much shit going on that even Rea's route would eventually lead to a bad end, arguably even worse than what happened with KKK with Marie no longer having 3 guardian deities.

But honestly don't expect too much from the murder mystery. I enjoyed thinking about it as it was presented but it is not an Agatha Christie novel.
