What? No, they don't, taste and smell are completely different senses. Smell is, of course, extremely important in the overall pleasure derived from food consumption, but then so is sight, and you wouldn't mix sight with taste, would you?

Asahi super dry tastes like ass
Asahi select is quite good, in my opinion
Sapporo premium is also pretty decent.

I've tried American, European, and Canadian beers that were way worse, and I've had ones that were way better.

It all depends what sort of context you're drinking it. I mean shit, on a hot summer day after sweating your ass off helping someone work on a car, served with spicy wings a plain old Budweiser is like the fucking nectar of the Gods.

When it comes to Japanese beer, Orion is by far the best, IMO. Too bad it's hard to find and expensive.

What I've noticed about the others is that they're REALLY different in bottles and on tap. I like most of the Japanese beers on tap, but bottled or canned, they tend to be kinda nasty.

Vodka actually has a pretty well established history in American drinking culture thanks to the Martini.

If you haven't found a whiskey that you like, try a bourbon. Put some Knob Creek in a glass and just smell it; once you get the caramel scent in your nose, you can definitely taste it in the bourbon.

As gay as it sounds- to get an appreciation for whiskey, drink progressively stronger and stronger Whiskey sours. That is, slowly add less and less sour mix to the whiskey.

The thing that 99% of people can't get past is the burn, and so people try to chug it or slam it down as opposed to enjoying the taste. With the sour mix, it covers the burn with a sour taste, while still letting some of the flavor of the whiskey come through.

It's how I eventually came to be able to drink whiskey straight up or on the rocks, which only a few of my friends can stand.

Sake is one of those really acquired tastes. What I found to be the key to enjoying it is to drink it like a shot, rather than sipping it (even if you don't drink the whole cup in one shot, you still swallow it quickly) and the enjoyment is in the aftertaste.

Hot sake is also more drinkable than cold, a lot of the time. It's why sakes made for cold consumption are more expensive, the heat makes crappy sake taste better, but when cold it HAS to be good stuff to taste decent.

Sapporo is okay, but iirc the US market Sapporo is made in Ontario.

The US has some fantastic beer, but it is only made in Washington and Oregon, which is to say it consists of microbrews you the reader are not cool enough to have ever heard of. Any American beer that is not made in Washington or Oregon is not worth paying for, though it may still be consumed if you feel bad about it after the fact, as long as it is not lite beer.

European beer is okay. there are some really good varieties and then there are the major agers, which aren't much better than US macrobrews. When it comes to smaller brews, there is so much variety that no generalizations can or ought to be made. However, major brands like Carling and Heineken are shit. European beers that are worth drinking are not generally imported into the United States, though Newcastle Brown Ale is alright and available where i live.

Canadian lagers are probably the best, but they are still merely lager. Kottenay Ale is okay if I happen to be in BC and need a brew.
