they are right, just don't be satisfied that you 'know a word' until you can recognize it when you see it. it will be harder at first cause every word will look totally different with kanji you don't know yet, but the difficulty quickly drops off as you start to learn thousands of words sharing common kanji with each other

no, I think that anon is talking about RTK(Remembering the Kanji). Basically, you learn kanji using the radicals to help your memory. For example 好(love/like) is just 女+子, the love a woman has for her child. It sounds stupid but it can be helpful for someone.

>> No.42185054

>> No.42185101

>>42185050
you figure that out without RTK though, I think RTK's thing is you make up thousands of stories parallel to the kanji that you have to rmemrber and that's supposed to help you 'remember the kanji'. pretty stupid cause you can just remember them by associating them with the meta meaning you feel from all the vocab you learn containing that kanji

After many years of trying different learning methods for written vocabulary (after learning grammar of course), if I had to go back in time and tell myself which one works the best...
I would say just LISTEN to spoken material. Even though my goal was reading, just listen anyway. Expand your vocabulary as spoken Japanese first, and then later supplement that with reading.

In my experience the retention rate is dramatically higher that way. It's far easier to learn new vocab as spoken words first, and I think more natural for the human mind to retain. So it forms a much more solid foundation for your mind to associate the written word with later and it sticks.
Trying to just memorize the written words straight away is like trying to hold water in a wicker basket - You may think you got it for a few days but see the words again a week later and they're gone.

Do both. But I was the same way, I avoided listening for so long because no matter how much written japanese I learned it still sounded like complete gibberish while listening.

But it actually doesn't take that long to improve, I think all you have to do is listen with intention. Specifically the intention to distinguish the different syllables and parts of the sentence.
So even if you don't understand what's being said you can still listen, and just try to pick out stuff like the particles (like は, に, を). It's hard at first, but quickly starts to become easier.
After a while it'll almost seem like the language slowed down because it takes less effort to parse it.

sometimes you instantly acquire a word as soon as you encounter it and look it up and you have it forever, sometimes the process of putting a word in an anki card causes you to get it then you just easy it, sometimes seeing it 3 times in context clicks it automatically without a lookup, sometimes you have to encounter a word 10+ times while reviewing it over a week in anki before it starts to click, it's pretty random desu. point is being surprised you forgot a word you just saw for the first time is because you have unrealistic expectations

If it's still too fast for you then I would say the goal is to just parse the sounds, pick out particles and possibly words (even if you don't know what they mean), it was really effective for me, because even though I've heard japanese a lot already I just let it all flow through me and that doesn't work.
And when I first started trying this I realized I couldn't even pick out particles! It seems hard at first but quickly becomes easier. Like within a few days or weeks if you do it this way, at least just focusing on trying to actually parse the sounds and pick out particles, maybe even repeat some things you hear at first.

And just to be clear that's only the first stage. Once you can parse the language with less effort then the goal is to understand what's being said to build up spoken vocabulary. So that when you see the same vocabulary later as written words the kanji are more likely to stick in your mind.

I would also say you can do the same thing with reading alone, but put primary focus on associating the words meaning with the way it _sounds_ at first. And put secondary focus on the kanji.

I think my main point is to just learn vocab primarily as sound+meaning. Because the mind is better at retaining that audio rather than a visual representation.

But whether you do it through listening or reading (but focusing on the sound primarily) is up to you.
I would recommend both.

Help me with this.
The whole sentence is:
須佐之男命は娘を妻にすることを条件に大蛇退治を約束し、毒の入った酒を作らせ、大蛇が酔ったところを退治した。
But only the last part is important:
大蛇が酔ったところを退治した。
I don't get that を. Doesn't seem like a marker for 退治, because he'd be "exterminating" the situation (ところ) itself instead of the snake. Dictionaries say ところを can mean のに, but this doesn't make sense at all.
According to English dictionaries を can "indicate time", but I can't find anything in Japanese ones, aside from stuff like 時間を過ごす, where verbs are specifically for actions related to time.

with some words yeah but not most of them, and a dictionary definition will let you click the meaning way faster than a single English word in most cases
in any case it's not a huge deal, cause you just need thr crappy bilingual definition to get in so you learn the real one in experience

There's honestly a huge vocab gap between that stuff and books
You can listen to a JP youtuber's 5 hour lecture on a shounen series, understand 95%+ of what he's saying, then open a VN and find an unknown word in every other sentence.
And then there are particular anime/manga which have way more rare vocab than other ones, either because they have enough exposition/narration to work in more literary language, or just for whatever reason that's the case. It's probably just an effect of me still not knowing Japanese, but I feel like there's a way bigger gap here than there is in English.

Some fucking seed oil / sugar / goyslop brain damage has permanently crippled me. I didn't know I could read so quickly on coffee.

I usually have to reread sentences multiple times to assemble and comprehend them, even when I know all the definitions.
Except when I'm caffeinated, where I just speed through the same material as if I'm reading in my native language.
Now when I run into an unfamiliar word, I don't start all over again after I look it up. I just table it, look it up, and instantly re-interpret the sentence with the new information in mind.

I rarely drink coffee so I'm only just figuring this out now. Same length, same subject/author but I just read through it in 1/5 the time. What the fuck. I could have been fluent 4 years ago.

How do i find japanese conversation partners ? Im fluent in two languages (ru and en) and i hypothetically can help people learn them, but most of the time i just get ignored on services like HelloTalk or Tandem. I dont put my real face on avatars there tho.
Maybe the solution is just to Chadfish, but it feels too dishonest and gross.

hell most manga in english rip sites is machine translated already, and it doesn't even do a good job

How are you supposed to use example sentences when starting out in Anki? Right now I find them confusing as the inflections(?) make them completely different visually and audibly compared to the base form word I'm being asked to remember.

Jisho.org, despite being really great generally, has really bad/awkward example sentences, which you really get to see in this video>
But unless you were already good at japanese or saw something like this to warn you, you would simply doubt yourself whenever one felt weird to you

The dark beers aren’t so bad, but yeah, stick to sake and shōchū. The latter’s pretty much all I drink.

Oh, and for shit’s sake, stay far, far away from Jap wine. Even the really fancy, expensive stuff is terrible, and most tastes like vodka with grape juice in.

So far it hasn't been overly bad, it doesn't help with hiragana at all but a lot of the kanji I've seen mean similar things for both (only started studying them this week tho). The only issues are the ones with different meanings or the alien scripts that disappeared from chinese in like 1200.
