>It's us who are not perfect and not Yuuka.
Incorrect. Our imperfection makes Yuuka imperfect. Nothing that still suffers and desires is perfect.

Fairly small and unimpressive because I am stingy, not overly fond of (local) translations, and live in what a majority of people call a dump.

None since I never felt the need to write in books and usually do not go very in-depth. If I find something particularly interesting I go back to reread passages, think them over, make associations, remember if necessary, occasionally mention to someone.. Same routine for canon dialogues.

It's a good bit of fun. You have to respect their ambition. Even characters that are just there for the sake of humor or to be walking memes like the two you posted are so committed to it and genuine that they end up loveable. The Yuuka stage was what convinced me that the head dev and the rest of his crew were completely unhinged in the best possible ways.
I would probably have to replay the whole thing through Complete Box this time but it would take a while and all the postgame things they added seem suspicious, like they might overextend themselves and end up taking away from the original setups

Because I don’t really think it was that good either. I’ve written more since then but I know who you are, you are probably much more bothered by the substance of it than whatever infantile writing or all the other mistakes I made. While I’ve grown as a writer since then, I haven’t really changed much as a person. For what it’s worth I want to be a good person, and I figured the person who dedicated 40 pages to shitting all over me might have some advice on that end. I don’t have the emotional bandwidth to read through an entire academic paper of it because I’m even more suicidal than usual lately and if you don’t have anything to say to me, goodbye then.

Me "shitting all over you" for forty pages is a conclusion you've come to here and now without really engaging the text, a text that is not overly difficult or complex. I was very critical at times, I cannot deny that, sometimes my mood is volatile and it can no longer stand the usual nonsense, since your short work was recommended to me I did with it whatever came to mind. That said, if you are interested in whatever I'm propounding then your best recourse would be to actually read through the pdf and mull parts of it over if you think they are worth the time. On being a good man I can offer no advice since I do not fit the description regardless of what definition you use.
Having a vague idea of what your current state might be like, however, whatever you hear, see or (do not) do could be used as another catalyst for destruction. In that case, do not force yourself to do or not do anything until you are able to handle it.

>How do you feel when you see this board and all the posts on it?
Well, there’s two things wrong. One, the whole practice in general makes a person inherently more selfish and makes respecting real human beings ever more impossible. It’s ultimately a form of narcissism, since you’re falling in love with an idea you have created.
However, even if you wanted to cast aside reality and pursue the delusion, I also think touhou is a terrible series to go about it with. Looking back at my yuuka fic, I have to wonder why I projected all of that onto yuuka instead of just pursuing a character which was actually that. Most anime, manga, and video games do not go for the vagueness that ZUN does.
So in sum, I think /jp/ is wrong and they’re pursuing the wrong course of action in the wrong way as well.

>> No.42311792

>>42311738
>Most anime, manga, and video games do not go for the vagueness that ZUN does.
Though ironically, in all the other girl-centric series I have gone through (idols, ships, fate, etc) you do not see this sort of thing as often. Most people are just there to coom and don’t really have the pretense of loyalty and relationship that /jp/ does. I can’t really explain why, I think touhou is just an inherently more autistic crowd who is more prone to latching onto a single thing to the exclusion of all else.

>> No.42312583

>>42311738
>>42311792
I can partially agree. The narcissism and autism are inevitable, fanon is everywhere encouraged, it is easy to see when someone else flies off into obvious headcanon territory but since people often notice this when it is at odds with their own, few recognize the headcanon in themselves. Look at any thread where someone has implied or tried to convince someone else that a certian character is this or that bust size, is or is not pure, and similar. If not intended as a joke, it is hilarious.
This being said, I still consider it one of Touhou's strengths to have such freedom of interpretation. Much of it is boring and got old years ago, and I have always criticized many of these and similar "projections", not purely because they are selfish, but because I think they do not quite understand the general spirit of the franchise or the actual character (which is there, be assured). To an extent, every interpretation is "right", and yet not all of them are equally quality.
As for the point that puzzles you, the difference might be in the fact that the other series you mention have had all of their girls designed with an audience in mind, while ZUN went with most of his character designs (at least in the early period) because he wanted them that way and only later felt inclined to expand the setting, which made them more charming to onlookers.
Of course I might simply be the most delusional, all of my meticulous questioning and reading of canonical and non-canonical information to express what I would consider a proper look at Yuuka as a character (which includes the blank spaces that an individual fan can fill in) could be a more grandiose form of "projection". Nevertheless, I do not do it out of romantic or sexual interest. Even a seemingly pathetic scenario that is excessively self-indulgent can be turned around and used as an opportunity to better understand both oneself and the object of one's obsessions.

This was very influential on me back in the day, I’d be surprised if you haven’t seen it by now but it’s one of the more interesting things this board has produced. There’s a lot of debate on if it’s real or not (I don’t think it is) but the viewpoints that went into it are in my opinion very real.
Once again, it’s strange how normalized this is within the small subculture of a subculture that is /jp/, because you really do not see this anywhere else nowadays. It’s ironic that a sort of “hookup culture” has become commonplace between the gacha of the month, seasonal anime of the month, vtuber of the month etc, this sort of intense devotion is really a relic of the 00’s pretty much. I say this because I think a lot of what bothers you is the selfishness of human relationships in general, of course Yuuka being fake definitely makes it more obvious but a lot of this applies to normalfags and their failed relationships as well. The “hookup culture” makes the selfishness more efficient but at the end of the day, it might always be there, even in the “purest” of loves.

>this sort of intense devotion is really a relic of the 00’s pretty much
Might be the case, save for a few stragglers, and I was very late to that party.
>fake
I use this word with some reservation since the fact that there is no physically existing "person" present is indispensable for better understanding but some might take it at face value.
The presence of selfishness in nearly all but especially "romantic" and sexual relationships is obvious. it simply tends to reach even farther in my mind. Pure love is something I can hardly believe in, most vanillafags strike me as more blatantly disgusting than the most unstable deviant, and my opinions on sex are predominantly negative. Most human endeavours end up suspect.

>> No.42313918

>>42313584
Going beyond just the realm of the fictional, I don’t think it’s possible to have a functioning society without at least the pretense of love. A society where people don’t even attempt to develop long lasting cooperative relationships would look much like, well, the black community in america. For better or worse, the vast majority of a person’s fate depends on the parents that birthed them, and more specifically, the relationship between those two parents. These relationships are ultimately a tool of evolution, the human brain is selfish to provide for its survival but it also knows that it would soon die without the help of others.
So really it’s just a choice, to let humanity sink back into entropy, or to attempt to build towards an ideal that may not be possible. Either way, the fictional character Yuuka is simply a way of sidestepping that game

>> No.42314019

>>42313918
>or to attempt to build towards an ideal that may not be possible.
And it’s no coincidence to me that the heavily k selected culture of japan is the society that pushes these ideals the furthest in their media

>> No.42314261

>>42313918
The first part is fairly obvious, yes, a society requires groups to be established and the family is the most basic unit etc. but remember that a society, like most anything, social or otherwise, requires exclusion to function. Whether biological determinism or something close to it is at play is debtable but in my mind there is more than biology at play in the way things are set up.
>to let humanity sink back into entropy, or to attempt to build towards an ideal that may not be possible
Now these two choices do not seem so different to me. An ideal, once realized, is hardly much of an ideal. Not to mention that entropy requires an object to devour, and the second option provides its needs.
>Either way, the fictional character Yuuka is simply a way of sidestepping that game
The way most people treat her, it's more of a surrogate, playing a slightly altered ruleset within the same system. A real shame, since she seems better fit to exit the system altogether.
And Japan, well, it might be a case of the effort being the result, so building towards an ideal is a manifestation of the ideal or similar.

Normally I would tell you fucks to stop being autistic but I'm feeling particularly autistic today so I will indulge.

Back in 2020 when the world went to shit, I fell into the fucking vtuber pit. While this new lifestyle of mine has given me moments of what I perceived was joy that fact the entire vtuber scene has devolved into a drama filled cesspool (which seems to be the fate of all things) has been giving me nothing but misery lately. Today in a brief moment of clarity I decided to ignore everything vtuber related today and play an ancient video game from my childhood. I'm not sure if it made me happy but it seemed to make me less miserable.

I'm not asking for help or advice, I'm quite aware the only person who can fix my issues is myself. I'm not even asking people to read the drivel I am typing. I'm just saying these things for the sake of saying them.

I think Yuuka is more of an ironic character if anything. She has a love for flowers and a bright colorful design, but she ends up playing the villain. She is very rude to others but her music is really warm, nostalgic, and sweet. She talks a big game but she hasn’t really done much, in the same game where she says genocide is just a game she expressly takes care to avoid harming innocents while testing new magic. And on a broader level, it’s extremely strange to me how she represents both what is real (nature) but also what is unreal (the world of dreams in pc98)
Basically she makes no sense, saying that Yuuka is a character who would never develop feelings for anyone feels like too simple of an answer but “dragging her down” to the human level also feels wrong. Actually, I don’t even think it’s possible to be snarky to others unless you have that capacity for bonding, disrespect is only the shadow of respect. If she was completely solitary and emotionless, she would be entirely neutral on that end. Whether anyone can actually form a relationship with her is a different matter however, but I don’t think it’s impossible, keep in mind most of the characters she talks to in the games are pigheaded retards too.

And that only scratches the surface of how many ostensible "contradictions" she accumulated over her short and prolific career as a relevant character. There are ways to try and reconcile them but I feel she will inevitably be neither here nor there, and that is where she is at her strongest.
>If she was completely solitary and emotionless, she would be entirely neutral on that end.
Neutrality as most people imagine it is a difficult thing to find. Taking a more Oriental approach, so to speak, we can keep her ultimately aloof and proud, far above the common man, while allowing the full range of interactions and emotions by saying that she's never affected by outside circumstances on a deep level. The famous genocide line, for instance, is genuine, she really is just enjoying herself to the apparent horror or amusement of the player, while lightly poking fun at the entirety of Makai, she has nothing to really prove or accomplish. Similarly with her interactions in PoFV, she sees through everyone else and engages in some light bullying but without any malice or cunning, just natural playfulness, even against Eiki with some reservations. If we have to go down the route of imagination, sure, she can have a cordial relationship with someone else, perhaps even a romantic one, but not on the level of a lovestruck highschool girl. When we start to go down more interesting roads, and make serious statements such as one of my personal favorites:
>You're my very first spouse in this long meaningless life of mine...
Then we have gone too far. Of course, this, too, can be interpreted in more acceptable ways.

>> No.42325138

It would be very hard to develop a romantic relationship with Yuuka, and despite being a non-serious character, the sheer difficulty it takes to get through to her would naturally make the more casual romance or friendship not really possible. It would have to be a pretty serious spark of attachment, or it just wouldn’t attach at all. Not going to defend a single line of that fic, but on a strictly Yuuka level, any romance (if at all) would necessitate a degree of severity, unless she was just fooling around to begin with, in which case it’s not really romance

I don't deny that all four of those have a sorrowful tinge to them, some whimsical and ethereal feeling that might characterize the fleeting dreams of youth. Even then, like a dream, they still have a good bit of energy and playfulness to them. The longing you hear might just be how we feel when we hear it now, and who knows, perhaps it reflects what the composer was thinking of at the time as well. Perhaps the difference in our views is because I've always been partial to Flower Land over her other themes. In broad strokes,
>Lotus Love
Fantastical intro, a common occurence in LLS, cute, somewhat uninteresting until it hits the main portion a minute in, builds up anticipation.
>Sleeping Terror
Personal favorite intro, drops off a little after. Emphasizes that your opponent has more to her than meets the eye.
>Dream Land
Short but climactic, lighter in tone than MS stage 6 and others so it can come off a bit like a melancholic last push instead of a final showdown.
>Inanimate Dream
Very "cool", as ZUN would say, hectic, loud and intimidating without losing any of the usual Touhou charm, a strange but effective blend of two seemingly disparate styles. The unused version and later MIDI remix are interesting alternatives.
>Not really a Yuuka-specific thing, this is just the tragedy of romance to begin with, specifically with women. They are fickle and disloyal, but they always continue to seek out romance regardless
Good thing Yuuka does not seek it out then.
Now, I know what you mean, games are often frivolous and women are known to act without understanding the gravity of a situation. Even so, do not think that I refer to typically feminine cruelty, which is either born out of cunning or naivety. I might simply be misunderstanding your point, however.

Yuuka would probably be a good mother. She takes care of her flowers and she's lived for so long she might be amused by the idea of spending 20 years or so to raise a few kids.
