find easier things to read like tadoku or hukumusume, or some easy manga, or what have you
you can't learn to read japanese (or anything else) from anki, especially using a deck that is in english.
you aren't even learning a larty trick or trivia because the words are super common
the hard part of learning japanese is getting your brain to process the alien structure of the language, and that's what will take you a long time
you can do that now or you can leave it for later, but it will not get easier no matter how many english definitions you memorize

Anyone here willing to gift me some ideas for a japanese engrish or native RPG skill name alternative?

In japanese, an active skill is often just called a skill or art, I want to make use of that, but I also want a regular western skill system too, and I'm struggling on a name. Proficiency makes sense to me, but it feels a little off theme to use that name. any ideas?

I feel the same way. I *hate* reading large amounts of katakana, but it could be worse. Pre-war, and even more so pre-Meiji, it was almost entirely written in just kanji and katakana, as katakana, with its angular shapes, was thought to better complement the appearance of kanji.

It can be important. Loan words in any language tend to be used in much narrower ways.

Example: デザート only refers to those foods eaten after the main meal, and that even includes things like coffee; it doesn’t not refer to those foods — usually sweet — which *happen* to be typically eaten at such a time.

That form historically derived from a contraction of the verb’s 未然形 and the auxiliary verb む. In the older form: 隠さむ.

む had a number of functions including marking intention, obligation, and also potential. 隠そう would probably be interpreted as a remnant of the potential, so 何を隠そう could be read as “what could I possibly hide?”

There are worse offenders in the “mean the opposite of what it should” camp, like 怪しからぬ, which grammatically negates the adjective 怪し, but came to somehow be misunderstood as intensifying it.

it's the third hardest one, 準1級 and 1級 are higher levels, and they are much more difficult. 2級 is relatively easy all things considered (only jouyou kanji, so with exception of ~5 kanji, you're bound to see them all no matter what media you consume, and it's the case for words too. the hardest part is to ensure you can reliably write from memory, but it's a matter of regular practice moreso than something inherently difficult. the biggest part of vocabulary learning for 2k was yojijukugo section simply because how rare they are compared to words in 読み and other sections, they were easy to remember because nearly all of them are distinctive and have somewhat interesting background stories they are derived from)

>>42109269

probably different people using it here have different definitions. I think of it as listening to something and not really understanding anything. Also contrary to what other people say I think white noising (by my definition) is useful and even necessary at the beginning cause at first you won't understand shit even if they're using vocab you memorized. You need to get your brain used to the language first before it can use anything you're trying to learn if that makes sense. It increasingly becomes a waste of time though, as your ear becomes increasingly capable of parsing the language, the main thing holding you back is unignorably your tiny vocabulary, so listening to shit you still cant understand sharply loses effectiveness. Again thats all by MY definition

So I've spent two weeks on Duolingo and have like 6k xp, and I honestly am having fun and can already say stuff like

ホテルはそこですか?

or like

モリさんはかっこいいです!

and what's neat is I'm actually already hearing stuff that I can translate in my head automatically, like when watching the last episode of Bleach, I understood そこですか? Before reading the subs. I know that Duolingo isn't going to be the only way to learn and is really just for beginners getting started, but I was already getting burned out on Anki cards after three days and finding I have exponentially more review each day, and I feel like I'm getting more gains just going through Duolingo every day.

I mean that'll happen eventually. At some point I'll feel like my gains are slowing and I'll search out other methods, at this point though, it's really good to get people consistent with practice. I just think it's a better beginner tool than telling someone to start diving headfirst into Anki cards right after memorizing the Kana. Duolingo slowly ramps up the sentences and introduces vocab at an even pace from what I'm seeing, which is exactly how you keep people engaged and learning how to combine words.

This is unironically an "The future is now old man" type situation. It's simply a better way to start learning a language.

Huh, weird. There’s no level restriction here in Moonland. I remember taking 二級 in a very small town, but the info sign in the lobby gave directions for all levels. Since here are no special considerations for offering any given level, I don’t see why it would be restricted.

I spend a similar amount
>Studied 229 cards in 29.98 minutes today (7.86s/card)
and most of that extra time comes from me letting the time run while not actually considering the card. Drinking, stretching, spacing out, etc. Unless it's actually impacting your ability to do your reps try not to statsfag so much.

>307 cards in 63 minutes
Why is everyone so fast I am I am so slow?

Are you relatively new? It gets easier as you go on. In my 10 new cards today there were no new kanji, so that's a huge help.

I just did the math and that's similar to me when starting out so don't worry.
