Shit like this makes me feel like I'll never be able to effortlessly and automatically understand Japanese. Every sentence feels like a brand new puzzle to decipher, even when I supposedly "know" all of the vocab and grammar in the sentence. The basic way of expressing any idea in Japanese is so different from English that it makes me feel like there will never be an end to the number of patterns and situations I have to learn.
In this case because it was a manga and I could see that the sentence was said by a person who was being forced to run when they didn't want to, I was able to figure out pretty quickly that the intended meaning was "I'm not running because I want to". But without any context my first guess probably would have been something like "I want to run but I'm not running".

I am struggling with parsing the grammar on this. Yomi-chan wants to think that the なりた in なりたそうに is coming from 成る. But I don't think I've ever seen this transformation before. I know of なる becoming なった or なります, but this looks like it would come from some word なりる instead, which I can't find in any dictionary.

reminder that if you're using yomichan you're not reading, you're just using a mtl with extra steps
you should be ashamed to use it after your first 2 months or so of learning
and using a japanese dictionary every 10 seconds isn't much better, maybe you should just read the dictionary directly instead of pretending your reading whatever you're trying to read

Anon達, I need some advice.

Last week I found a used copy of the Japanese version of Persona 5 Royal going for around 1/3 of retail price. My Japanese is barely JLPT 4 but I thought, hey, why not, I already played the base game so I know pretty much how the story goes, all the systems, etc. The thing is, I would like to learn some stuff out of the game, but jesus fucking christ I basically took an hour to finish the prologue alone due to how many new words were in it.

It's not like the game is my only source of learning, so I think one option would be skipping the dialogue while reading it somewhat for things I already know and occasionally picking some new things, or instead going full autismo and stopping for every sentence where something new shows up.

It's also a game that I really enjoy playing, so I think it both adds to my motivation to learn in order to understand it and to my impatience when I have to stop every 3 minutes to check a dictionary.

So what sounds better in your experience? Play the game along with other studies for the immersion alone or sit through mining every single thing?

I'd recommend picking up whatever doesn't feel like too much trouble and ignoring the rest.
Or take screenshots/look up another playthrough on youtube and go through some stuff again after when you're no longer in the flow

additionally there is no "quicker" form in japanese grammar. when comparing things they just say "a is quick than b", "a is blue than b", etc.
sometimes they add もっと to make it "more quick" but its just for emphasis and not grammatically required.
