It's totally normal. Over time your brain starts to adjust to what it's seeing, and you begin to see patterns emerge for meanings or sounds. Your brain loves to make patterns, it loves logic, so when you catch the tail of a piece of the pattern your brain will latch onto it. You remember some words because they're simple, but you also have their context. You have a frame of reference for them. I bet you also know terms from work or school that weren't obvious at first, but you found a frame for them and a way to logically integrate them into your existing knowledge. The same thing happens with learning a language. It's a snowball rolling down a hill, picking up bits, losing others, but always growing. When you forget something, you just need to relearn it, and it'll be easier before you have more context clues to help bind it more solidly. Don't give up, don't get disheartened, accept it as part of the process and keep on going!
