It's neither a fad nor will it replace artists. It's really difficult to get the AI to make what you want and you're getting way better results if you A) draw something yourself to go off of or B) clean up after the AI. It's still much easier to draw something straight onto a piece of paper if there is no easy way to describe it than to try to prompt it. Prompting adds another layer to the process that you will have to wrangle

People from 1995 never could have invisioned that the computers they used back then could improve to the point where you could play the Witcher 3 on them. I realize that. What i'm saying is it easier to draw two lines that are supposed to be a street run off into the horizon and give that picture to the AI and tell it 'hey this is supposed to be a street' than it is to completely prompt all of that from the ground up. Obviously, that is a very simple example but imagine you're making a very complex picture with a lot of features. You would be better off to just select a tiny portion of the picture and tell the AI to add a, for example, fruit bowl there instead of making that up from scratch.
Also, how are you going to give the picture your style? Since the AI is trained on already existing pictures it finds on the internet, it cannot make up its own style. If you're ok with generic art that is good enough that might not matter but if you're trying to stand out from the sea of low effort AI art you need to do branding, an own style is just that.

Well then give it the type of style you want. Train the AI on an image set or give it a hyper network to work on. It's generic in the sense that it has to train on existing images, but since there is so much variety in existing images narrowing down what you want the AI to give you will allow for more unique generations.

Having said that, you come up with points that don't hold up very well. AI's "recognizable rendering" differs depending on the model, prompting, image set, etc. Lumping all the AI work into this big group of unoriginality doesn't apply here. I've seen how the AI can grasp onto the art style of any artist, and is perfectly capable of doing so to any artist's style given enough images. This is the AI's "signature" or "seed". The AI threads outside of /jp/ support this. Go look for yourself.

I think there is one big problem with A.I. art, and it's that it "trains" by using drawings made by other artist, presumably without an agreement or consent.
Otherwise, if there is a market for it and it doesn't involve exploiting the works of those who don't support this trend, then I don't see what is the problem, but that is not going to happen.

I see a couple differences, for one, A.I. is a tool and not a human being, I will explain why that matters to me.
Another difference is that creating one's own art does not need to involve copying another's at all. There are certain influences of course, such as being introduced to the broad "anime" style of art, but from that point on, you can independently invent your own style, which I believe A.I. may be incapable of.
But I really just see one problem and one problem only. A.I. is a tool which works by using other people's work. It is not a question of whether or not A.I. has a "right" to learn from other drawings, it's about humans, who tend to be exploitative in nature, using this tool for personal gain (or any reason really) which relies on other people's work.
I have nothing against A.I. technology in itself and I hope you will get your wish fulfilled once the A.I. is capable of achieving such things without using the works of people who do not consent to such use of their work.

1. You're on /jp/, are you saying you actually buy your eroges and don't pirate?

The way "AI" works is not that far removed from the mechanistic workings of the human imagination, your unconscious mind is a prediction machine and it will generate things it has seen, thus you can imagine the same things. The differences are twofold: "AI" can't steer it like you do with a self (a temporary limitation that while seems hard to you now, will be overcome in the next decade if things go without major hiccups), you can't share the output of your imagination directly, while nn's can be trained to give desired outputs.

AI using it is fair use and humans using it is fair use, it's utterly dumb and hypocritical for everyone to become a copyright maximalists when some artists jobs are hypothetically threatened.

1. I'm no stranger to piracy but I don't play eroge.

2. There is an element of randomness to creating one's own art, I'll compare it to slamming random keys on piano and getting an interesting pattern and then refining it into a melody. There are many, many possible approaches to art.
I don't know what will be the legal outcome, whether it will remain as fair use or not, but my belief is that it is not fair use due to the arguements presented in my previous post.
I haven't expressed any concern for people whose jobs are threatened, work is work, and they will probably have to adapt to whatever new work they can do.

Consider you'd be in the same situation if we suddenly had a machine that could dump the output of your imagination into a picture.
Now suddenly people would be imagining things and it'd be instantly done. The actual output would be worse, maybe some pictures are out of focus, on the corners, or they lack the right details except where you're paying attention.

Maybe some people imagine things more clearly, and some worse. Maybe some people would use drugs and find that the output is better. Maybe those with aphantasia can't do it. For most people they stop drawing with their pencils, the quality can be worse than the hand drawn work because imagination is imperfect.

Someone's imagination dumps from their dreams may have less artifacts, but then you will have wrong anatomy sometimes not unlike your AI.

Artists lament that they are drowned in a sea of "soulless shit" that didn't involve much effort. Maybe some commision artists can't make a buck.

Some still do their work, some more commercially inclined quit. Quality drops a little bit, but the average person is happy they can share a lot more than they could before.


What you get with various image generation models is the exact same stuff, they work in a similar predictive way as our brains do, but they are much smaller and lack a self or a way of steering or interating like you do with hand or computer drawn images.

I used to think copyright was absurd and contradictory for at least two decades, and was happily awaiting the time when the human brain could be digitized into a computer (and to a lesser extent the imagination dumping thought experiment above, some ideal brain computer interface), and in that case, a lot of these silly laws stop making any sense and become uneforceable.

Instead we get neural networks that can do something similar before we get mind uploads. That's okay. Maybe people will try to bandaid their current crisis to their absurd laws for a few years, but longer term the same question will arise tenfold, until copyright dies or we as humans don't make it.

Human nature was always based on improving on previous things in the past, that's learning, and it's how we function - even more directly because we have to process the information and we remember it.

Some people try to not even look at some copyrighted works because they are afraid they will accidentally reproduce it in their works, it's that absurd. Copyright is a barrier to human progress and a to me an undesired limit to human progress.

Still, for now, you looking at a picture is fair use and a neural network doing the same is also fair use. In both cases the network (biological or artificial) are updated and the recall is faster. It's not really automated photobashing, it's building internal representations that are highly compressed, exactly the same thing the human neocortex does when it remembers sensory input.


If you're so afraid of being "copied", you should consider never sharing your work with anyone, since they can reproduce it in their imagination. But what's the point then if not to share something with someone? Why draw at all when you can keep it in your mind?

I do not care about some work of mine being copied either, so I will make myself more clear.
If you are a true waifufag or something similar, you might understand this. Don't fool yourself into thinking people that make these things actually "understand" how they work, it's more about designing structures flexible enough to actually provide the functionality needed, what emerges is not trivial and understanding it is a natural science like any other.

If the reason that bothers you is that anyone can now "use" it. In that case, consider the mind upload example in my previous post. If someone saw your picture and somehow extracted the part of their mind that generated it and shared it with everyone, it'd be the same kind of defilement.

Where do you draw the line? Biological neural network? Embodied one like humans or animals? Non-embodied but spiking (biological-like design)? More artificial designs (most current)?
But most of them converges to very similar internal representations even when you make many changes! This is something people have shown again and again by doing interpretability work on current neural networks.

If you install the Web UI your program will look a little something like pic related. You enter what exactly you want the AI to generate for you in the "prompt" section and what you do not want to see in the negative prompt section. The sampling steps allows the AI to spend more time generating the image from the prompts you inputted. The sampling method is the type of algorithm the AI uses to interpret the prompts. I usually use DPM2 a Karras. The width and height tells the AI the dimensions of the image(s) you'd like to generate. The batch count tells the AI how many images you'd like to generate. The process is honestly too complicated for me to explain in depth but it would be much easier for you to just try it out yourself using the Google Cloud Hosted Install here:

It needs a Google Account and the GPU usage is limited but unless you have a problem with it it works fine for creating the images you want.

Large growth isn't sustainable and will eventually hit diminishing returns. In similar fields, machine translations haven't improved significantly nor has replaced translators. CGI still looks jarring at times and deals with issues such as clipping. A stock that makes daily 10% gains for a week doesn't mean it will be worth investing long term. AI in its current state, while impressive, seems largely overhyped.

Because, all blob-hand related jokes aside, it has improved ENORMOUSLY in the past year. This time last year the most sophisticated AI generator I had on my PC spat out unconvincing images of burnt, blobby semi-naked women over several minuites' runtime; six months ago we had the DALLE-MINI craze of a 3*3 grid of postage-stamp images (that were terrifying body horror at any greater size); at the start of fall improvements to SD made it run *much* more reliably and consistently in terms of outputs, and since the NovelAI leak a few months back countless new and specialist models have been released (you see other anons discussing them on this thread, I think most will have been created in the last few months) for every conceivable purpose.

The field IS advancing enormously fast in the last few years, and while yes, we will hit diminishing returns sooner, I think there are some serious improvements (mostly in performance, reliability, and consistency rather than qualitatively completely new content, though some of the animation done with SD frames looks very impressive). So although you're right in that the rate of advances continues to slow, new advances will always continue to be made, merely over the course of years rather than months.

Also though I hate to be the 'well AKSHUALLY' guy, both CGI and MTL have improved enormously over the best 5-10 years, to the point that even mass-market films 'deepfake' in dead actors (Star Wars anyone- and that was about six years ago, people already complain it looks unrealistic now because of how fast the standards are advancing), and MTL is now good that some of my friends with foreign language degrees (even in French and Chinese, which you'd think would be in high demand) can't get a job because it's cheaper to employ MTL and get a few natives to iron out the bugs anyway. Technology marches on indeed, although I agree sometimes the hype writes checks the future can't cash.

So I don't know exactly how your system's configured but if you're using the same webgui that I am then whenever you save an image with the save button, the prompt, seed, model and settings you used to create it are added to the 'log.csv' file in your log/images folder by default. So if that wasn't erased/deleted irretrevably when you reinstalled you can check there, find the #number generated of the Rika pics you like, and copypaste exactly what you used to get them (I know how you feel, I can never get the exact details right, too many options).
Alternatively, by default textual information about your prompts is saved embedded in the .png files' metadata as chunks, so you can read that by dropping the relevent file in the 'PNG info' box, which does the same thing. However you lose this if you compress your files into .jpgs and don't save the originals.

Afaik the AI is trained on 512x512, so squares are actually the default.
The fact it can do higher resolutions at all is pretty neat, 768x768 still works well but 1024x1024 is quite iffy.

I guess the algorithm simply has more space to fill with the same amount of informations for a 1024x1024 picture than a 512x512 one. Vertical images often work well for a single character, but Okuu's wings take space so a square or even landscape format might not be that bad. You could try adding more details about the background so the space with no Okuu can be filled with Okuu-related things like "crow", "flame" or "underground". But I actually do like the style of chose Okuus.

OP here. This thread is a lot less popular than I expected it to be. I'm not a shill for Stable Diffusion or any of the other AI competitors. I simply wanted to make a thread where we could all post specifically AI art that featured characters or backgrounds from some of our favorite manga, VNs, video games, etc. It's Otaku related! The /g/ threads don't offer that. I care about what /jp/ created. I mean, why do you think there is a /jp/ OC thread and drawthread up on the catalog? This is also an OC thread, just with a different style, I guess. I imagine the hostility harbored towards me and other AI artists was to be expected. This is /jp/ after all, and the drawing artists here would clearly have some sort of irrational hate towards me and other AI artists for alleged "stealing" of their artworks. I'm willing to bet they would not have had a single problem with a human artist taking innovation and making their own artwork inspired by yours. This is just hypocrisy. Many of the attacks here have been against my person, claiming that I'm doing this out of selfishness, or that I'm creating this art because I think I'm worthy of praise. This is not true. You guys need to get it together. Calm down, try out some meditation or try some calming exercises.

This is by far the most comfy /sdg/ on the site, exactly because it's so much slower. Our OC doesn't get flushed to the archives the same day we post them like on other boards.

My only issue with AI art is deluge of it in various places that comes off as shilling and intentional demoralization, plus smarmy cunts that think they're hot shit and baiting butthurt artists. I'm an artist and it is really, really demoralizing seeing how the coloring that takes me 10 hours at least can be done on seconds by it. AI art doesn't copy so it doesn't matter. Synthesizing between multiple sources isn't copying. It's trying to make the case that AI traces and plagiarizes art the same way a human does when it doesn't. Admittedly, a large limitation of AI is that you have limited control over the aesthetics you can have it create and a lot of it comes down to lottery chance, but through the continual trial and error, an emphasis on specific aesthetics through prompts, selective curation, and possible editing cleanup afterwards, you can get the AI to create art that matches style that you falls in line with your sense of values.
