People pay for JAV for the same reason people buy games when everything is on the internet: less ads, simpler, legal and they want to support the people involved. There's also the factor of culture around JAV because it's similar to idols, they even hold meet and greets so the aspect of rooting for one girl and buying all her stuff is there.

The reason they need a side job is because the job isn't consistent. How many actresses do you know that are releasing a new film every week? The only cases I know of is of Workaholics like Yui Hatano and Ai Uehara.
