Post in this thread if you used to think that Katana's were awesome swords and superior to their western counterparts.

Back when I was a kid, I thought they could cut through steel and a Samurai could cut a Knight in full armour clean in half ... how retarded I was.

What the fuck you talking about? Do you know how old lightsabers are?

>> No.4200414

I used to think they were awesome due to being designed for speed rather than strength. Therefore, I actually saw it as less capable of slicing through things than a normal sword, but so easy to handle that if you use one, you can just dodge any blow your opponent tries to land, and just aim for his weak spot so quickly he can't defend himself.

THE STRONGEST KATANAH

>> No.4200477

>>4200414
If that's how you wanted to fight, perhaps you should take a look at the Rapier. The Katana is a two-handed sword. No two-handed sword in history will achieve that kind of flexibility in a battle between skilled opponents. Even if you were capable of wielding the two-hander with one hand, it would be inferior in speed and handling to a light and quick one-hander. Two-handers are for power and quick kills. Therefore, it is useless to wield one unless you have strong armor to protect you. This is why the Europeans only stopped using two-handers after plate armor disappeared because of the gun. In Japan, their inferior armor was still adequate for the battles they fought because they were only going against each other. Japanese weapons were not designed for use against strong armor, and therefore, what they wore into battle was often enough.

Katanas are smalltime. When I was a kid, I wanted to be able to snap my fingers and create micron-diameter vacuums that would cut fucking BUILDINGS in twain.

Even the Japanese should understand this because while the sword is moving fast while it is cutting (just like all swords) the two handed technique is more clumsy and slower than one-handed techniques and requires more hand shifting and odd rotations due to the cutting nature of the sword. A thrusting weapon that is light and quick like the rapier is more versatile in an un-armored duel, and is more accurate. In the wind-up time where a katana user is preparing to cut, he exposes his forearms and wrists to attack, which is a favorite place for epee (Rapier) fencers to attack. In fact, epee fencers train for this eventuality more than any other type of attack because it is quick, easier than a torso hit, and will disable your opponent. Imagine trying to wield a sword with both hands only to have your forearm stabbed through by a steel blade. Now that you are moving even slower and in pain, the Rapier fencer can easily dispatch you. The wind up only opens the forearms to attack from a thrusting weapon for a matter of seconds, but that is much longer than is typically allowed when another Rapier user exposes his forearms in a mistake. Thus, when facing a katana user from an Epee fencer's perspective, they are full of openings and are moving slow. The only thing you have to beware of is the added weight and power behind a two-handed blow. But since you are light and faster than he is, carrying a lighter sword, you can time your attacks to hit when he is preparing for his own attack. Hence attacking him during the instance of his raising the sword even a little (exposing forearms to thrusting weapons) or rotating it to the side for any kind of slash from that direction (which exposes forearms too). A thrust from the katana is nothing against a weapon specialized for that kind of attack, where every parry taught in swordsmanship schools is designed to block, divert, and strike back (parry, riposte) against such attacks.
