/jp/ approved book for learning kanji? I took a few years of japanese in high school but that was years ago--- I still have no trouble reading hiragana and katakana but my vocabulary is extremely limited.

don't do that

If you really want a book, there is RTK, but it's flawed and keywords are unnecessary.
I'd recommend learning how to read kanji as you come about them (by looking up unknown vocabulary / reading with furigana).
You could use QM's "Kanken Deck" for learning how to write *after* you've learned how to read.

This book has nearly 2000 unique kanji in it. It should get you through most of the common ones.
