Imada Mio's been popular ever since her supporting role in HanaNochi in 2018. She's since then been in a lot of CMs, been in popular projects and worked with other well known actors. Earlier this year, she had her first main role in Waru (2022), m*nga adaption and a remake. Waru was not good (feminist show btw) and didn't bring out her strengths. Thank you for the link, man. I enjoyed this movie so much. It's probably the first time I've watched a movie that could mix the comedic and the otherwordly and exceed at it. Its authenticity with the characters, especially the kids, is astonishing. I will NOT settle in life with anything short of a Mieko daughter.

It's been a while. I left ever since hololive. I need some help that only this thread can provide. I just got done watching August in the water and loved it. I want to watch more Japanese cinema from the Showa. I remembered this absolutely fucking bizarre late 90s ish movie that had the main characters inherent an American 60s sports car and there was this weird robotic child.. thing, in the trunk who killed these perverted man the main girl knew. It was low budget. I found it on YouTube but the boy in the trunk creeped me out so much I removed it from my playlists a year ago. Anyone got any ideas?
Also, I kind of want to take a stab at Showa cinema like August in the water but not too serious, and not too comedic. Please recommend any of your favorites. I only have a ps3/4 and it's my only connection to the outside world, so YouTube preferred (ps3 script is from 2006 and cannot support almost any website).

Watched Toyoda's Ressurrection trilogy today, for an informal trilogy never conceived as such it really fits together perfectly, not just thematically and aesthetically, but in terms of composition too. Wolf's Calling is like an evocative tone piece, a prelude setting up the motifs (past informing the present, revolt, resentment), even ending perfectly on that final post-credits scene, all of which The Day of Destruction then runs with, as the main presentation, being an urgent call to action in response and then Go Seppukku Yourselves brings it all together, like in an epilogue that spells out the indictment at the heart of these movies. It's brilliant, just well worth watching them all together as a single movie. Also Kiyohiko Shibukawa in every single one of them, I loce that guy. Also, the music and sound, Toyoda just never fucking misses on that front. I wish I could have seen it all in a cinema, they are the kind of movies that need to be as overwhelming as possible.

As a complete experience, it's my favorite Toyoda just after 9souls, I think. Blue Spring is "better", but the roughness of The Day of Destruction gives it a certain edge, I like how provocative it is and it captures a moment in time in a pure way no other movie in the future will be able to.

I'm glad to find someone who appreciates Toyoda's latest works. The Ressurrection trilogy is a collection of angry films striking out at government ineptitude tying together modern and ancient imagery in an arresting way. What makes these films so enthralling and engaging is that they pull no punches and it's easy enough to see the films as the embodiment of Toyoda's frustration. Very thought-provoking thanks to the special atmosphere he crafted for these three films. I already rewatched the trilogy earlier this year but talking about it made me want to do it again.

And by the way, if you haven't watched Monster Club yet, I highly recommend you do now. After rewatching it, it very much felt like the predecessor to the Resurrection Trilogy. Loneliness and isolation, it had the main themes found in the trilogy but presented in a more surrealistic style.

I did watch Monsters Club a few weeks before, loved it too! I was especially impressed by the dialogue and performances there. They really are very similar, I'd say that the main difference is that TRT explores the themes more viscerally, visually, on a pure emotional level, while MC is more literate and resolved to finding the answers to its questions. TRT is more like a punk song, designed to articulate a certain feeling. I guess prefering one or the other falls down on what kind of movies one is attuned with better. TRT fit me like a glove in that regard.

Recently watched Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight, and it was pretty solid. I am wary of anything with amnesia in the plot, and you can expect some of the stereotypical drama/tragedy you often seen in Japanese stories, but it was still enjoyable.

Riko Fukumoto is a cute, and so is Kotone Furukawa who I know from Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and Over the Town.

There are some tropes that come into play, but I'm not going to mention them because of spoilers, but I think they are used okay as tools to progress the plot. But overall the cinematography is very good because it's that Netflix budget, and the acting is good, which is something I almost never say for a Japanese drama.

Anyone else here like Tetsuya Nakashima? I think he's my absolute filmmaker of all time when it comes to visuals and aesthetics. I love the super cartoony Y2K style of Kamikaze Girls and Memories of Matsuko, I love the emo music video/internet aesthetic of Confessions (picrel), I love the chaotic schizo editing of World of Kanako. It Comes was kind of a mediocre movie but I love the opening credits in that too, the classic supernatural J-Horror visuals except set to a fucking King Krule song of all things. He reminds me of a high budget Sion Sono or something. Highly recommend if you just want to watch something very over the top and stylish.

most of kitano's early works. Audition and Pulse. Also Panic in High School made me fall in love with Atsuko Asano. She was so pretty and charming in that movie man... So I've watched a couple of other movies she starred in like Play it, Boogie-Woogie. Not a bad movie, not a good one either. Comfy late 70's atmosphere. But she's very playful and lively in this role. Same director than Lady Snowblood.

I'm quite sad when an actress or actor I enjoyed in a movie don't get any good roles later on... Same happened with the bullied girl in All about Lily Chou Chou.

Japan has very strict laws and regulations to protect actors and crew from any accidents happening when filming. This leads to less money for investors as there's so little return from projects dealing with these policies. Only a few studios have any expertise in the genre and they're mostly old timers who can't work all day. Just one is a bet because they often put dying torrents there, so there's a chance you won't be able to complete the download. You should download several of them (4 or 5) right after they are put on Featured (the current ones expire tomorrow so new ones will be features the day after), and then seed them at full bandwidth for at least 3/4 days.

Another option is to configure your client to auto-download a torrent as soon as it's published (matching on its name). Chose something popular, if you download it within 1 minute of publication and then seed it at full bandwidth for 24 hrs you can usually get at least 10GB of upload. Post-2000 Kitano is awkward in that his films are either uncharacteristically straightforward crowdpleasers or super selfindulgent exercises that mean very little to anyone not too interested in his celebrity-auteur persona. His 90's work managed to balance that masterfully, but it's like he gave up after that. It's insane to look at the slip in his filmography after Dolls. Discounting Brother that's nine all-timers in a row, but then just implosion. He got his commercial success, I guess, but at what cost? I also find Zatoichi extra disappointing for how it wastes Asano, Kitano really competing with Hollywood in who can underutilize him more.
