Why do so many study sites treat furigana like some poison that will forever cripple your ability to remember kanji? Isn't furigana specifically written in a way so it won't "overshadow" kanji?

>> No.41751986

>>41751975
Probably because it's kinda like subs, you can't really not read it.
It's always there, even if you just barely see it with the corner of your eye as you intentionally try to avoid it, it's still helping you massively.
Will it cripple you? No, it's useful at the start, but if most of what you're reading has furigana, when you switch to no furigana stuff, you'll suddenly barely know any reading.
Get the baby wheels off at some point.

>> No.41751989

>>41751975
>Why do so many study sites treat furigana like some poison that will forever cripple your ability to remember kanji?
because it will. try looking at this sentence without reading it. its literally impossible, your brain does it automatically. furrygana is the same way, you WILL read it before you read and try to recall the kanji.

I honestly think furigana just makes it harder for you to learn kanji. Furigana is really most useful for japanese kids, who are already fluent in the language and so the furigana just helps them go 'oh so that's the kanji for that word'
If by some miracle you were already fluent but illiterate in japanese I think furigana would be really helpful in that case.
The best I ever found was low quality scans of PokeSpe. It was actually more than good enough quality to enjoy, but it was such taht you had to really zoom in and focus to see the furigana but the kanji was perfectly readable. So the furigana didn't get in the way of reading the kanji but it made it easier to look up unknown words. if only every manga by some miracle was scanned like that

I'm looking for some immersion material!
Most of the stuff in jp I probably already know/already tried, and it feels kinda boring to read really slowly something when I already know what happens, and the only sites that I know to find new manga/novels only list things that have at least partial translations.

Anyone has any recommendation for some good LN/WN/Manga?
Requirements:
Pretty long. If it only has a few chapters I just cba to get invested.
Prefer little to no romance if possible (I know this is a hard task with all the harems... so I'll take it as long as romance isn't a big factor)
Fantasy/progression preferred.
If it's too popular I probably already know about it, so... yeah.

If free and max accuracy are your goals, then I would honestly just have Jisho open in a tab or something with the draw function open for the search bar. If you can read most stuff then you probably know your radicals, or at least know how what the key features of the character are. If you aren't confident about stroke order, it generally doesn't matter when it comes to Jisho's search algorithm as long as the shapes are even remotely close.

What are the little ticks above しな supposed to mean?
I had seen them already in an epub book above the word わな (as in trap) and assumed it was a furigana fuckup or something, but I didn't think too much about it since I could still understand the meaning.
So what is it? It's driving me insane that I can't deduce the meaning and I have no idea how to google it.

Is there a good website to find webnovels to read?

mainly for searching by category, and if the story is finished or not, would be apriciated

Whenever you learn a new word composed of 2 or more kanji, should I try to associate which part of the word corresponds to which kanji or is that not always possible?

i use this for recs, it has a nice tagging system, but obviously has the major downside of only listing series where someone tried to 'translate' a few chapters
there's probably a better site but that's what i use for webnovel recs

Kanji aren't words. You need to know words. Lots of them. Anywhere from 10 to 20 thousand depending on the content.

The content you consume over the years needs to get progressively more difficult. Most people just find their comfort zone (cartoons etc) and stay there.

whats the best way to assess where I am comprehensively if I've been studying on and off at my own pace for the past 7 years? should i take practice jlpt tests?
i mainly learned from translating touhou doujin arranges and then anime because japanese prosody fascinated me a lot and I went down that rabbit hole
im still grasping verb forms for both ichidan and godan
pitch accent is a totally new concept to me (jesus christ)
i probably have half of all joyo kanji memorized but i can only remember most of them mnemonically rather than on their own
that and i suck ass at actually gathering resources
